The sound imitation of some national instruments in piano music 7 The sound imitation of some national instruments in piano music La imitación sonora de algunos instrumentos nacionales en música de piano. aBSTRACT The article reveals the textural, timbre-dynamic, harmonic, performing and other musical means of imitating the sound of national instruments in piano music. Based on the analysis of literature and works by M. Mussorgsky, S. Rachmaninov, F. Liszt, Wang Jiangzhong, Zhu Wanhua, A. Rudenko, R. Kasimov and other composers, summarizing the performing and pedagogical experience of studying piano works shows the means of implementing various instruments to groups of idiophones, membranophones, chordophones and aerophones according to the instrumental classification of Hornbostel-Sachs. The article shows that onomatopoeia is based not only on the sound image of the primary source instrument, but also on recreating the playing techniques of playing it. At the same time, the traditions of academic art, the achievements of European pianism and the sound capabilities of the piano are actualized. Imitation of the sound of the bell, one of the idiophones, occupies an important place in foreign and domestic music. In the works of Russian composers, various types of Orthodox bells ring out, such as Blagovest, Perebor, Perezvon, and Trezvon. In the works of Chinese composers, the sounds of ancient bianzhong ceremonial bells are displayed. The imitation of a bell is based on the reproduction of its timbre-acoustic characteristics, rich in overtones of a booming sound, long and smoothly dying out, accompanied by other harmonies or figurations, pedalization of the piano. The imitation of string-stringed chordophones is notable for its expressiveness, melodic expressiveness, improvisation, and rich ornamentation. -
The St. Mary-Le-Tower Society
The St. Mary-le-Tower Society The bells of St. Mary-le-Tower are amongst the best known in Britain. St. Mary-le-Tower, or St. Mary at the Tower to give it its proper name, takes its name from its proximity to a tower on the town walls. The tower and walls are long since gone and the only remnants today are nearby street names like Tower Street and Tower Ramparts. The aim of this document is to give all known details of the bells that have rung out from the Tower. I also hope to provide an insight into the tremendous ringers, whose goings on have left St. Mary-le-Tower steeped in history, for there was a time that the St. Mary-le-Tower Society were the most accomplished company in the land. On beginning research, I also decided on a secondary aim for this article. Throughout the years there has been a considerable amount of information published about St. Mary-le- Tower. However, some of it is simply wrong. In places I have chosen to point out these incorrect facts and in others I have decided to leave it out for now as this is only an early draft. I hope to provide a valuable insight into the true history of ringing at our wonderful church: St. Mary-le-Tower. I hope you enjoy reading the article. The Early Days There were only five bells and a Sanctus bell present in the tower in 1553. The treble and tenor were then recast by Miles Graye I of Colchester in 1607 and 1610 respectively. -

Dear friends, What has marked the momentous years in your life? Weddings? Births? New ventures and adventures? The past year has been truly momentous for Mount Angel. Long-planned projects came to fruition —thanks to the unceasing prayers of our monks and friends, the generosity of our donors, and some dedicated beer fans! Benedictine Brewery opened its St. Michael Taproom to the public a year ago and has recently sailed through its second annual Oktoberfest with larger revenues and thumbs-up reviews. More important, the taproom’s guests enjoy meeting the monks and learning about Mount Angel. Join them! Have you had a chance to visit the newly re-opened Saint Benedict Guesthouse and Retreat Center? Its welcoming new spaces have inspired our guests and renewed the monks’ ministry of hospitality. Whether you live near or far, please consider reserving a room for the spiritual retreat your soul needs. It’s waiting for you. Thanks to careful planning, the Abbey’s historic library will be refurbished in time to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2020. True to its Benedictine heritage, the library represents the tradition of sharing and preserving the best of theology and culture. Remember, if you live within a 50-mile radius of Mount Angel, you qualify for a library card. So much more has happened this year, including a nationwide downturn in priestly vocations and seminary enrollment. Mount Angel Seminary meets this trend with a spirit of confidence. -
