We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all ringers are created equal, that they are en- gaged by their directors with certain unalien- able duties, that among these are rehearsals, knowledge in ringing and the pursuit for music. from Declaration of a director Thomas Jeffbellson Foreword The most delightful and fulfilling aspect of the handbell world is its people. The music lifts us up, events help us to grow and learn, the sound of the bells is inherently magical and touches our hearts. But it is the people of the handbell world – the composers, conductors, organizers, teachers, and above all the ringers – that motivate and inspire us and become blessings in returnour lives. to sonologymusic.com Handbellto purchase people are enthusiasts, unlocked loyal devotees copy to this wonderful art form and to the people they ring with and for. They cheer one another on and become a family. No other music so completely depends on a close-knit, energetic team. Handbell people encourage each other with a generous spirit, a quirky sense of humor, and genuine love for becoming better than the sum of their parts through making music together. Although Michael Jedamzik doesn’t make handbells part of his professional career, he is a ringer who LOVES handbells! I have been delighted to meet Michael through the global handbell network and through reading his “Handbell Compendium”, I have been educated by his extensive and earnest research. He has compiled information from a huge number of sources that will interest scientists, musicians in endeavors other than handbells, handbell leaders, ringers, and listeners. I have been impressed at his creation of a PREVIEWHandbell Compendium 7 reference work that belongs in the library of everyone who leads or just plain loves handbells. But most of all, I have been inspired by a ringer who is one of the handbell world’s truly great enthusiasts. Michael LOVES handbells. And he has created an enduring and valuable work for all of us who share that love. Catherine Jordan ’03 Whoever said physics isn’t fun? When you add bells to anything, it’s a great time! This February we had the good fortune to meet with Edith Cassel, Professor of Physics, who teaches a course “The Physics of Musical Sound.” Each year, as part of her course, she brings her class to the tower for a tour and Chimes concert. She also participated in a panel discussion on the Physics of Bells during the Chimes Rededication Celebration in 1999. For our special session, Professor Cassel came armed with diagrams, charts, bell models, xylophone bars, mallets, and a great sense of humor. For the next hour we explored the size, shape and composition of bells, and how they produce the A page beautiful music that we take for granted. Quite a bit from Rick of the material was pretty confusing – for example, Watson’s why is it that a larger and more massive bell pro- journal duces a lower pitch than a smaller and less massive containing bell, yet, when you remove mass from a bell by notations tuning, it lowers the pitch? The pitch of a bell is from the Cornell related not only to its mass but its rigidity, and the Chimes thinning of the bell’s shape with tuning makes the tuning bell less rigid, and therefore it has a lower pitch. project. This page I could go on with the fun bell facts we learned! for the low C hour bell.

FFTuner basic instructions. (for Chrome or Firefox, not IE) A) Overview B) Graphical User Interface elements defined C) Measuring inharmonicity of a string D) Demonstration of just and equal temperament scales E) Basic tuning sequence F) Tuning hardware and techniques G) Guitars H) Drums I) Disclaimer A) Overview Why FFTuner (piano)? There are many excellent piano-tuning applications available (both for free and for charge). This one is designed to also demonstrate a little music theory (and physics for the ‘engineer’ in all of us). It displays and helps interpret the full audio spectra produced when striking a piano key, including its harmonics. Since it does not lock in on the primary note struck (like many other tuners do), you can tune the interval between two keys by examining the spectral regions where their harmonics should overlap in frequency. You can also clearly see (and measure) the inharmonicity driving ‘stretch’ tuning (where the spacing of real-string harmonics is not constant, but increases with higher harmonics). The tuning sequence described here effectively incorporates your piano’s specific inharmonicity directly, key by key, (and makes it visually clear why choices have to be made). You can also use a (very) simple calculated stretch if desired. Other tuner apps have pre-defined stretch curves available (or record keys and then algorithmically calculate their own). Some are much more sophisticated indeed! B) Graphical User Interface elements defined A) Complete interface. Green: Fast Fourier Transform of microphone input (linear display in this case) Yellow: Left fundamental and harmonics (dotted lines) up to output frequency (dashed line).

  • A Replica of the Stretch Clock Recently Reinstated at the West End of Independence Hall
A replica of the Stretch clock recently reinstated at the west end of Independence Hall. (Photograph taken by the author in summer of 197J.) THE Pennsylvania Magazine OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY The Stretch Qlock and its "Bell at the State House URING the spring of 1973, workmen completed the construc- tion of a replica of a large clock dial and masonry clock D case at the west end of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the original of which had been installed there in 1753 by a local clockmaker, Thomas Stretch. That equipment, which resembled a giant grandfather's clock, had been removed in about 1830, with no other subsequent effort having been made to reconstruct it. It therefore seems an opportune time to assemble the scattered in- formation regarding the history of that clock and its bell and to present their stories. The acquisition of the original clock and bell by the Pennsylvania colonial Assembly is closely related to the acquisition of the Liberty Bell. Because of this, most historians have tended to focus their writings on that more famous bell, and to pay but little attention to the hard-working, more durable, and equally large clock bell. They have also had a tendency either to claim or imply that the Liberty Bell and the clock bell had been procured in connection with a plan to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary, or "Jubilee Year," of the granting of the Charter of Privileges to the colony by William Penn. But, with one exception, nothing has been found among the surviving records which would support such a contention.

Ringer Socialisation & Interaction Activities Fun non-ringing team-building activities for a handbell group Permission granted for reprinting by: Malcolm C Wilson, Dunblane www.ringinpraise.org.uk Continued from Part 1 posted May 2010 in ringEr-Notes Introduction Are you looking for a fun activity that has a handbell theme? Perhaps for a short break from regular ringing rehearsals or at a gathering of many ringer groups, or a ringer party. The idea of a handbell group being a team, working together as one unit and every ringer getting to know each other better can be nurtured by activities such as those that follow. Each of the games below can incorporate further interaction as part of the game e.g. by making it part of the game for each ringer to introduce themselves to the others in their team or perhaps to say something about themselves. And the accent is on fun! Many more familiar games can be given a handbell "twist" - have a "brainstorming" session with other ringers once they've seen the games and your imagination is the only limit! Have fun!
