TRIBUTE EDWARD VON DER PORTEN (1933-2018) Maritime Historian, Teacher, Archaeologist, Museum Director, and Friend

Edward Von der Porten was born in New York to German immigrants and moved with his family to California, where he earned a B.A. and M.A. in History from San Francisco State University. He began teaching at the high school level, where he would continue to influence students for over 25 years. Ed turned to archaeology to save Native American artifacts after learning they were being destroyed by bulldozers in the Point Reyes National Seashore. Through his archaeological work in California, especially at Drakes Bay, Ed became a noted expert on Chinese porcelain, which led him to discover a 16th-century Manila in , Mexico. In his crusade to protect archaeological sites, Ed was responsible for having Drakes Bay established as a National Historic Landmark. Texas A&M University Press is now preparing for publication his book on the archaeology of the Baja galleon site. It will be a fitting final contribution by Ed to the field of maritime archaeology. His pioneering spirit will be sorely missed by all of us at INA.
