O Think! During countless aeons, for this one time I have attained this precious human birth, Which is so very hard to achieve and so easy to lose.

The time of death is uncertain and the conditions leading to death are beyond my comprehension, This cherished body can die even today!

So I shall abandon all worldly concerns that keep me chained to samsara, Including all non-virtues and heavy heinous crimes.

Instead I shall use the little time I have left wisely and practise Dharma with urgency, Reflecting on the benefits of liberation.

Begin by closing the left nostril using the Pacifying and exhale three times through the right nostril, then change to the other nostril. Finish by exhaling three times through both nostrils. Visualise all afflictions and negativity leaving your body in the form of black smoke.

7 II. Part II Inner Preliminaries

1. Refuge & Prostrations i. Visualisation

To take refuge, which is the foundation of all Dharma practice, first go to an isolated or quiet location and place the mind in its natural state, relaxed and focused. Visualise the space in front of you as a pure or enlightened realm, vast and expansive. In the centre of this realm is a great palace made of various precious substances and adorned with stunning jewels and ornaments. In the centre of the palace is an enormous wish-fulfilling tree with its vast draping branches and beautiful leaves, flowers and fruit radiating throughout the palace. At the top of this tree is a magnificent throne supported by lions. Upon this throne is a multi-coloured lotus, with sun, moon, rahu and kalagni discs. One’s root lama is seated upon the throne in the form of blue Vajradhara; he holds a vajra and bell crossed at the level of his heart. Primordial Buddha sits at the root lama’s crown.

Surrounding your vajra master, in the branches of the tree, are all the lineage lamas, the thirty-five Dharma Kings of Shambhala andidam theY of Highest Yoga Tantra, such as Kalachakra. Surrounding them are the deities of the four classes of . Buddha Shakyamuni sits below the Yidam deities. To his right side, upon the branches of the tree, is the Arya of Eight , including , Manjushri and Avalokiteshvara. To his left side is the Arya Sangha of shravakas and pratyekas, such as Shariputra. At the base of this tree is an ocean of and Dharma protectors endowed with the divine eye, who guard the precious teachings. They abide in a manner protecting you. Behind the branches, the holy Dharma appears as precious golden texts.

Be resolute that everything you visualise actually is like this. At the same time, be resolute that you take refuge on behalf of all sentient beings, with great longing and devotion towards the lama, the Three Jewels and the ocean of spiritual protection. Then pray with strong compassion and resolute intention to liberate all beings, passionately wishing that they find protection from the sufferings of samsara. ii. Long Refuge Prayer

While holding this visualisation as best you can, recite the long refuge prayer once and then repeat the short refuge prayer three or more times while making full prostrations. Full prostrations are only required while Refuge is your main practice.

MA NAM KHA DANG NYAM PI SEM CHEN THAM CHED | DU DI NE ZUNG TE | JI TRID JANG CHUP NYING PO LA CHI KYI WAR DU | CHOK CHU DU SUM GYI DE ZHIN SHEK PA THAM CHED KYI KU SUNG THUK

For the sake of all mother-like beings as limitless as space, from now until I reach the essence of enlightenment I take refuge in the noble root and lineage lords of Dharma, the glorious pure lamas, who embody the body, speech, mind, qualities and actions of the Buddhas of the three times and the ten directions, and are the source of the 84,000 and kings of the noble Arya Sangha. iii. Short Refuge Prayer

CHO JE PAL DEN LA MA DAM PA NAM LA KYAP SU CHI’O YI DAM KYIL KHOR GYI LHA TSOK NAM LA KYAP SU CHI’O DZOK PI SANG GYE CHOM DEN DE NAM LA KYAP SU CHI’O DAM PI CHÖ NAM LA KYAP SU CHI’O PHAK PI GE DUN NAM LA KYAP SU CHI’O KHAN DRO CHÖ KYONG DRUNG MA YE SHE KYI CHEN DANG DEN PA NAM LA KYAP SU CHI’O

I take refuge in the Dharma lords, the glorious lamas. I take refuge in the enlightened mandala of . I take refuge in the bhagavans, the perfect Buddhas. I take refuge in the immaculate holy Dharma. I take refuge in the noble Arya Sangha. I take refuge in the dakinis and all-seeing Dharma protectors.

To be recited three times or more if you are focusing on Refuge practice.

LA MA DANG KON CHOK RIN PO CHE NAM PA SUM LA DAK CHAK TSAL ZHING KYAP SU CHI’O | KHYED NAM KYI DAK GI GYUD JIN GYI LAP DU SOL

I pay homage and take refuge in the lama and the precious Three Jewels. Please bless my mind-stream! (3x) iv. Dedication

When Refuge is your main practice, once recitation and prostrations are complete, visualise the objects of Refuge melting into light and dissolving into your mindstream like water being poured into water. Be resolute that you become inseparable from the Refuge field and then dedicate your merits. If Refuge practice is not your primary practice, continue to hold the Refuge visualisation as you move to the next practice.

GE WA DI YI KYE WO KUN | SO NAM YE SHE TSOK DZOD ZHING | SO NAM YE SHE LI JUNG WI | DAM PA NYI PO THOP PAR SHOK

Through the power of this virtue, may I complete the accumulation of merit and wisdom and so attain the two kayas of enlightenment for the sake of all beings.

2. Generating the Mind of Enlightenment

9 i. Visualisation

While visualising the Refuge field in front of you, generate great from your heart to liberate all sentient beings on behalf of the Refuge field. ii. Aspirational Bodhichitta

SEM CHEN THAM CHED KYI DON DU DZOK PI SANG GYE KYI GO PANG THOP PAR JA | DI CHED DU ZAP LAM DOR JE NEL JOR GOM PAR GI’O

For the liberation of all beings, I will reach the state of complete ; I shall therefore meditate on the profound vajrayoga path.

To be repeated three or more times. iii. Engaged Bodhichitta

Having generated the mind of enlightenment, now expand it to include all beings without exception.

SEM CHEN THAM CHED DE WA DANG DE WI GYU DANG DEN PAR GYUR CHIK DUK NGEL DANG DUK NGAL GYI GYU DANG DREL WAR GYUR CHIK DUK NGEL MED PI DE WA DAM PA DANG MIM DREL WAR GYUR CHIK NYE RING CHAK DANG NYI DANG DREL WI TANG NYOM TSAD MED PA LA NE PAR GYUR CHIK

May all beings have happiness and the causes of happiness. May all beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering. May all beings never be separated from the sublime happiness that is free from suffering. May all beings abide in the great equanimity free from attachment and aversion.

This prayer is repeated one or three times, or more if you are focusing on Bodhicitta practice. iv. [Strengthening the Bodhisattva Vows

If you would like to renew your Bodhisattva pledges, recite the following verse from Shantideva’s “Bodhisattva’s Way of Life”:

Just as the sugatas of former ages, Aroused bodhicitta and then, in stages, Trained themselves in skilful practice, On the genuine path of the bodhisattvas, Like them, I take this sacred vow: To arouse bodhicitta here and now, And train myself for others’ good, Gradually, as a bodhisattva should.

Repeat this verse three times, and then develop the certainty that you have generated the .]

10 3. Vajrasattva Purification i. Visualisation

First recite:

OM SVABHAVA SHUDDHA SARVA DHARMA SVABHAVA SHUDDHO HANG All phenomena including oneself enter the natural state of emptiness.

TONG PI NGANG LI RANG GI CHI WOR PAM LI PAD MA DANG | A LI LA WI KYIL KHOR GYI TENG DU | HUNG LI DOR JE KAR PO TSE NGA PA | TE WA LA HUNG GI TSEN PA

From the natural state of emptiness, above my crown, the syllable PAM ( ) appears which transforms into an eight-petalled white 厃 lotus flower. The syllable AH ( ) appears on top of the lotus flower ꍱཿ and transforms into a full moon disc. On top of the moon disc appears the syllable HUNG ( ) that transforms into a white five- ཧཱུྃ pronged vajra with a HUNG ( ) syllable at its hub. ཧཱུྃ DE LI ÖD DRÖ | PHAK PA CHOD SEM CHEN THAM CHED KYI DIK DRIP YANG | TSUR DU HUNG LA THIM | DE ÖD DU ZHU WA YONG SU GYUR PA LI

This HUNG ( ) radiates luminous light to all universes and makes ཧཱུྃ limitless offerings to all Arya beings. The light then radiates to all beings and purifies their negativities and obscurations. It then returns and dissolves into the syllable HUNG ( ) and the white ཧཱུྃ five-pronged vajra then completely melts into light.

CHOM DEN DE DOR JE SEM PA KU DOK KAR PO ZHAL CHIK CHAK NYI | YE DOR JE DANG YON DRIL WU DZIN PI YUM LA KHYUD PA

The light transforms instantly into Vajrasattva, with a white body, one face and two arms, holding a vajra in his right hand and a bell in his left. He embraces his consort Vajratopa in Yab-yum.

YUM DOR JE NYEM MA KAR MO DRI GU DANG THOD PA DZIN PA DANG NYAM PAR JOR WA | NYI KA’ANG RU PA DANG RIN PO CHE GYEN GYI GYEN PA | DOR JE DANG PAD MI KYIL MO TRUNG GI ZHUK PI

Vajratopa is white in colour, holding a curved knife in her right hand and a skull cup in her left. They are both adorned with bone and jewel ornaments and sit respectively with legs crossed in the vajra and lotus postures.

DREL WAR OM | DRIN PAR AH | THUK KAR HUNG | TE WAR HO | THUK KI HUNG LI ÖD DRÖ CHOK CHU SANG GYE DANG JANG CHUP SEM PA THAM CHED JIN LAP YE SHE KYI DUD TSI NAM PAR CHAN DRANG

At the Yab-yum’s forehead the syllable OM ( ) appears. ꍼྃ

11 At the throat, AH ( ) ꍱཿ At the heart, HUNG ( ) ཧཱུྃ And at the navel, HO ( ) 齼ཿ From the HUNG ( ) at the Yab-yum’s heart, light radiates outward ཧཱུྃ to the ten directions and the purification power of all the Buddhas and bodhisattvas radiates back in the form of white nectar.

DZA HUNG VAM HO | NYI SU MED PAR TIM

DZA ( ) | HUNG ( ) | VAM ( ) | HO ( ) ཛཿ ཧཱུྃ བྃ 齼ཿ The nectar now becomes inseparable from Vajrasattva Yab-yum. ii. Request for Purification

CHOM DEN DE DAK DANG SEM CHEN THAM CHED KYI KHOR WA THOK MA MED PA NE SAK PI DIK NYE TUNG DRI MI TSOK THAM CHED JANG ZHING DAK PAR DZAD DU SOL

Vajrasattva Yab-yum, please purify and cleanse all negativities, obscurations and transgressions accumulated by myself and all beings since beginningless time. iii. The Actual Purification

Visualise blissful nectar flowing from the unionajrasattva ofV Yab-yum into the crown of your head, pushing sickness and defilements out of your body and into the ground below. As the nectar cleans away all negativities, bring to mind the four powers and recite the following mantra:

OM SHRI VAJRA MANUPALAYA | VAJRA HERUKA TENOPA | TISHTHA DRIDHO ME BHAVA | SUTOKAYO ME BHAVA | ANURAKTO ME BHAVA | SUPOKAYO ME BHAVA | SARVA MAME PRAYATSA | SARVA KARMA SU TSA ME | TSITAM SHREYANG KURU HUNG | HA HA HA HA HO | BHAGAVAN VAJRA HERUKA MAME MUNTSA | HERUKA BHAVA MAHA SAMAYA SATTVA AH HUNG PHET

This mantra is recited one, three, seven or twenty-one times, or as much as you can if you are focusing on this practice. Conclude with the prayer that follows. iv. Reinforcing the Four Powers

GON PO DAK NI MI SHE MONG PA TE | DAM TSIK LI NI GAL ZHING NYAM | LA MA GON PÖ KYAP DZOD CHIK | TSO WO DOR JE DZIN PA TE | THUK JE CHEN PÖ DAK NYID CHEN | DRO WI TSO LA DAK KYAP CHI

Great protector, due to ignorance and confusion I have broken my samaya and let them decline. Compassionate Lama Vajrasattva Yab-yum, please purify my negativities and protect me. In you I take refuge, supreme Vajra holder, treasure of compassion and rescuer of all beings.

KU SUN THUK TSA WA DANG YAN LAK GI DAM TSIK NYAM PA THAM CHED THOL LO SHAK SO | KHOR WA THOK MA MED PA NE SAK PI DIK

12 DRIP NYE TUNG DRI MI TSOK THAM CHED JUNG ZHING DAK PAR JIN GYI LAP TU SOL

I confess and repent all transgressions of my body, speech and mind, including all breaches of my root and branch vows. Please purify and cleanse all stains, negativities, obscurations, and transgressions amassed throughout beginningless cyclic existence. v. Dissolution

DOR JE SEM PA YAB YUM LA WA ZHU WA TAR GYUR PA LI RANG GI CHI TSUK NE THIM | DOR JE SEM PA YAB YUM GYI KU SUNG THUK DANG RANG GI LU NGAK YID SUM YE SHE DOR JE NAM YER MED DU GYUR

As if the moon were melting into me, Vajrasattva Yab-yum looks down at me with a smile and begins to melt with joy, dissolving through the crown of my head. The body, speech and mind of Vajrasattva Yab-yum become inseparable from my own body, speech and mind. vi. Dedication

GE WA DI YI NYUR DU DAK | DOR JE SEM PA DRUP GYUR NE | DRO WA CHIK KYANG MA LU PA | DE YI SA LA GOD PAR SHOK | GE WA DI YI KYE WO KUN | SO NAM YE SHE TSOK DZOD SHING | SO NAM YE SHE LI JUNG WI | DAM PA NYI PO THOP PAR SHOK

Through this virtue may I quickly reach the enlightened state of Vajrasattva Yab-yum and lead all beings without exception to this ground of purity. Through this virtue may all beings complete the accumulation of merit and primordial wisdom and so attain the two kayas of enlightenment.

15 5. Foundation Guru Yoga i. Visualisation

Visualise yourself in a magnificent vast palace in the centre of a pure realm. Your vajra master appears in front of you, in the centre of the palace, as Lord Vajradhara. He is seated upon a lotus, with sun, moon, rahu [and kalagni] discs which rest upon a lions’ throne.

Your vajra master has a body blue in colour, with one face and two arms, holding a vajra and bell crossed at the level of his heart. His legs are in full lotus posture. Adorned with silk garments and jewel ornaments, with marks and signs complete, his body is radiant and luminous. He smiles down upon you, pleased with you.

Lord Vajradhara is surrounded by the deities of the four classes of Tantra, all lineage lamas and the entire assembly of yidam deities, buddhas, bodhisattvas, shravakas, pratyekas, dakinis and Dharma protectors. Be confident that all of them are actually present. Having visualised the field of assembly, make great offerings, both actual and visualised. As you begin to practice you should have confident faith that you possess Buddha-nature and that it can be uncovered through sincere unwavering devotion to your immaculate root lama. ii. 22 III. Part III Unique Kalachakra Preliminaries

1. Innate Kalachakra Practice i. Visualisation

Having first established the mind of Refuge and Bodhicitta earlier inyour practice, recite:

OM SHUNYATA JNANA VAJRA SVABHAVA ATMAKO HANG OM, I consist of the nature of the awareness vajra of emptiness.

TONG PI NGANG LI | RANG KAD CHIK GI DU KHOR LHAN KYE SU GYUR PA NI | JANG ZHI RI RAB PAD LA NYI MA DRA CHEN NAM TSEK PI DAN LA | DAK NYID PAL DU KYI KHOR LO KU DOK NGON PO | ZHAL CHIK CHAK NYI CHAN SUM PA | DOR JE DANG DRIL WU DZIN PI YUM LA KHYUD PA

Arising from emptiness, I instantly and spontaneously appear as Innate Kalachakra. I appear upon a cushioned floor formed by a lotus and moon, sun, Rahu [and Kalagni] discs, Which lies upon the summit of Mount Meru and the universe of four elements. My body is blue in colour, with one face, two arms and three eyes. I embrace the consort Vishvamata and I hold a vajra and bell at my chest.

ZHAP YON PA KAR PO KUM PI WANG CHUK KAR PO DANG | YI PA MAR PO KYANG WI DÖD LHA MAR PÖ NYING KAR NAN PA | RAL WI THOR TSUK DANG | YID ZHIN GYI NOR WU DANG | LA WA CHED PI WU LA GYAN PA

My white left leg is drawn in and tramples the heart of the white creation god. My red right leg is extended and tramples the heart of the red desire god. My head is adorned with a topknot of plaited locks, a wish- fulfilling jewel and a crescent moon.

DOR JI GYEN DANG | DAK GI PAK PI SHAM THAP CHEN | CHAK SOR NAM KHA DOK NGA PA | SOR TSIK NAM KHA DOK SUM PA | DOR JE SEM PI WU LA GYEN CHING | ME RI KHA DOK NA NGA PI WU NA ZHUK | DRO CHAK DRE PI NYAM CHEN NO

I am wearing vajra ornaments and a lower garment of tiger skin. My fingers are of five different colours and the three joints of each finger are also of different colours. Vajrasattva is seated upon the crown of my head, And I stand in the centre of a burning ring of flames of five different colours.

23 My facial expression shows a mixture of wrath and passion.

DE LA KHYUD PI NA TSOK YUM KU DOK SER MO | ZHAL CHIK CHAK NYI CHAN SUM MA | YI DRI GU DANG | YON THÖD PA DZIN PI YAB LA KHYUD CHING | ZHAP YI KUM YON KYANG WI YAB DANG JOR WA | CHER WU RU PI CHAK GYA NGE GYEN CHING | WU TRA CHED TROL WA’O

I am embraced by Vishvamata who has a body yellow in colour, with one face, two arms and three eyes. She holds a curved knife in her right hand and a skull cup in her left hand. With her right leg drawn in and her left leg extended, we are standing together in union. She is naked and adorned with the five bone ornaments. Half of her hair is tied in a topknot and the rest is falling loose.

DRAL WAR OM | DRIN PAR AH | THUK KAR HUNG | TE WAR HO | SANG NE SU SWA | TSUK TOR DU HA NAM KHOD PAR GYUR

At the forehead of my Yab-yum appears the syllable OM ( ) ꍼྃ At the throat, AH ( ) ꍱཿ At the heart, HUNG ( ) ཧཱུྃ At the navel, HO ( ) 齼ཿ At the secret place, SVA ( ) སྭཱ And on the crown, HA ( ) 齱 RANG GI NYING KA NE ÖD ZER TRÖ | NÖD THAM CHED ZHAL YI KHANG DANG | CHUD THAM CHED DU KYI KHOR LU LHA TSOK SU GYUR

Rays of light emanate outwards from my heart transforming the entire universe into a Buddha-field, And all beings into innumerable deities of the Kalachakra mandala.

You can keep the mind focused single-pointedly upon this visualisation for as long as you wish. ii. Mantra Repetition and Dissolution

Having stabilised the visualisation of Innate Kalachakra, visualise the Kalachakra mantra symbol at your heart upon a lotus, moon disc, sun disc, Rahu disc and Kalagni disc. Then recite the mantra while visualising the mantra symbol. The mantra is visualised as OM ( ), then there is a blue HA ( ), a green ꍼྃ ཧ KSHA ( ), a multi-coloured MA ( ), a yellow LA ( ), a white VA( ), a red RA ཀྵ མ ལ ཝ ( ), and a black YA( ). At the top is a white crescent moon with a red sun on it ར ཡ and a dark purple nadu (like a small flame) arising from the sun.

OM HAKSHA MALA VARA YANG SVAHA

DE THAM CHED ÖD DU ZHU NE RANG LA THIM

24 The entire visualisation then melts into light and dissolves into me. iii. Dedication

GE WA DI YI NYUR DU DAK | DU KYI KHOR LO DRUP GYUR NE | DRO WA CHIK KYANG MA LU PA | DE YI SA LA GOD PAR SHOK

By the power of this virtue, May I swiftly attain the state of Kalachakra, And lead all beings to Kalachakra enlightenment!
