The Shithro empowerment is an initiation into the Peaceful and Wrathful symbolic deities that personify each practitioner's (aggregates of form, perception, feeling, mental volitions and consciousness) and the great elements (earth, air, fire, water and space). The 100 divine figures commonly known, as the Bardo Deities and they are manifestations of the practitioner's five skandhas combined with the four elements. At the moment of death, the elements dissolve and their nature arises as after-death visions. The Bardo instructions provide us with a body of techniques and practices by which we can discover our own Buddha 100 Peaceful & Wrathful Deities Nature. ======

1 of 5 Vajra Master The 31st Drigung Kyabgon 5th Chetsang Thugje Nyima (1828-1889) recognized 1st Ontül Kunzang Drodül to be the emanation of Khiu Chung Lotsawa, one of the twenty-five main disciples of Rinpoche. Since Kunzang Drodül was the elder brother of Orgyen Nüden Dorje, his successive incarnations are known as Ontül, which means 'the elder brother'. In 1954, H.H. 37th Drigung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche and H.H. 16th Gyalwa recognized him as the incarnation of Ontül, and were given the name Konchog Tenzin Thrinle Rabgye Palzangpo. Accordingly, in the same year he was enthroned in the Monastery Wogmin Thubten Shedrub Ling in Dokham-Nangchen, . Ontül Rinpoche is a well-known Master who holds both the unbroken of the Maha (ChakChen) and Maha Ati (Dzogchen) transmission of the Drigung Lineage. ======

Transmission The lineage of transmission is that of Yangzab Dzogchen, received by Guru Rinpoche and later recovered as Treasure by the 17th Lineage Holder Drigung Tertön Gyalwa Rinchen Phuntsog, who brought the Yangzab teachings and practices into the Drigung Kagyu lineage.

Therefore Yangzab is known as the Drigung Dzogchen, the pinnacle of the Nine Yanas.

2 of 5 Empowerment The empowerment takes 3 full days and must be received in full. The first day involved with preliminary consecrations of the Shithro of 100 Peaceful and Wrathful Bardo Deities. On the second and third day the actual empowerments of the Peaceful and Wrathful Deities are given in four phases on each day. ======

Benefits The benefits of receiving the empowerment, practicing it and reciting the are many. One will recognize the stages of the Bardo as they occur, will not fall into lower existences, will attain liberation from cyclic existence and will eventually attain . While it is good to recognize all 100 symbolic deities, it is not strictly necessary as they are included within the Five Buddhas and their Consorts. The crucial point is to recognize and realize the divine nature of one's own skandhas and elements, for the after-death visions arise from nowhere else. ======

10-Year Study Courses The Drigung Dzogchen Community (DDC) has been set up internationally and programs are arranged on a progressive study manner for duration of 10 years. The Shithro Empowerment, which confers supreme blessings and purification to students for the practice of Wrathful is part of the 2nd Year Practice, set forth in the DDC programs. Till date Four Year programs were compiled namely: Foundational Practice, Meditation Practice, Cutting Through Attachment and Introduction to Dzogchen. We have also formulated a worldwide group in the vicinity of the sacred lake of Guru Rinpoche called Tsopema Lake. This one-week retreat commences in the year 2003 and continued every alternate year. For more info. kindly visit the Study Courses. ======

3 of 5 Practice After receiving the empowerment it is best that the students should engage in the Foundation Practices and complete the entire Yangzab Dzogchen cycle of teachings or the 10 Year Study Courses. If this is not possible they should at least practice the short of the which is available during the event.

The important point to remember in the Bardo is to recognize these appearances to be merely the projections of your mind. Therefore, working with the practice and visualization of a Yidam such as Hayagriva, Avalokiteshvara, Amitabha, or some other , is very helpful, because by doing these deity visualizations in this life, you cultivate the habit of recognizing appearances as projections of mind.

There are 3 practice text avaialble: 1. The Regular Practice of Three Roots 7pages with the Yidam Hayagriva as the main meditative figure and contemplation 2. The Bardo 21pages also called Self Liberation in the Bardo 3. Concise Hayagriva/ Sadhana 80pages this practice text is use in retreats ======
