It is also said that merely hearing this teaching prevents birth in the lower realms; merely understanding it causes one to travel the path of great bliss; and bringing its meaning to mind causes one to accomplish the irreversible state of the spontaneously arisen awareness holder. -

Pilgrimage to Drakar Dreldzong The Written Tradition and Contemporary Practices among Amdo Tibetans ,#-7--a};-1 Zhuoma ( |) Thesis Submitted for the Degree of M. Phil in Tibetan Studies Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages University of Oslo Spring 2008 1 Summary This thesis focuses on pilgrimage (gnas skor) to Drakar Dreldzong, a Buddhist holy mountain (gnas ri) in a remote area of Amdo, Tibet, in the present day Qinghai Province in the western part of China. The mountain had long been a solitude hermitage and still is a popular pilgrimage site for Tibetan lamas and nearby laymen. Pilgrimage to holy mountains was, and still is, significant for the religious, cultural and literary life of Tibet, and even for today’s economic climate in Tibet. This thesis presents the traditional perceptions of the site reflected both in written texts, namely pilgrimage guides (gnas bshad), and in the contemporary practices of pilgrimage to Drakar Dreldzong. It specifically talks about an early pilgrimage guide (Guide A) written by a tantric practitioner in the early 17th century, and newly developed guides (Guides B, C and D), based on the 17th century one, edited and composed by contemporary Tibetan lay intellectuals and monks from Dreldzong Monastery. This monastery, which follows the Gelukba tradition, was established in 1923 at the foot of the mountain. The section about the early guide mainly introduces the historical framework of pilgrimage guides and provides an impression of the situation of the mountain in from the 17th to the 21st century. In particular, it translates the text and gives comments and analysis on the content. -

We are in the bardo of this life, we visit the bardo of dreaming every night, the bardo of death can be upon us at any second--we have lots of bardos to experience. Therefore bardo practice is so important! Everything is our bardo, and it is through these bardos that we perpetuate our delusion; likewise it is through these bardos that finally we will become liberated. If we know how to navigate the bardos, then we will have some hope for liberation rather than confusion. If you have never been to America, but you have a very good map and you have studied it well, then it will not be so difficult when you arrive. We are in the bardo of this life right now, each second; when it's time for us to go at death we will go to another bardo. Right now we can't recognize the terrain of the bardo, we have no map, and that is why for most people at death there is only terror. The more confused you are, the more difficult it is. Now you have the chance to do bardo practice, which means you can get a map and learn not only the streets but where the restaurants are, the bus station, airport, train station, and hotels. If you know all of this, then you have some hope. Each person has their own car, which means they have the ability to go where they like, but they need gas and they need to know the road. -

The difference between NKT and Gelug Dharma Teachers The NKT provides Dharma teachers to schools, colleges, universities, health and prison services and the general public. It is important therefore to consider the appropriateness of the training and qualifications of their teachers. Here we consider two approaches. The NKT’s system and the Gelug system. The Gelug is where Kelsang Gyatso, Spiritual Director and guru of the NKT, studied Buddhism. It must be noted that he did not complete his studies by taking all of the geshe examinations or attending tantric college. Later he was to be expelled from his own monastery by a unanimous decision. The Tulku System in Tibetan Buddhism: Its Reliability, Orthodoxy and Social Impacts By Ramin Etesami A thesis submitted to the graduate school in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts at the International Buddhist College, Thailand March, 20 Abstract The Tulku institution is a unique characteristic of Tibetan Buddhism with a central role in this tradition, to the extent that it is present in almost every aspect of Tibet’s culture and tradition. However, despite this central role and the scope and diversity of the socio-religious aspects of the institution, only a few studies have so far been conducted to shed light on it. On the other hand, an aura of sacredness; distorted pictures projected by the media and film industries;political propaganda and misinformation; and tendencies to follow a pattern of cult behavior; have made the Tulku institution a highly controversial topic for research; and consequently, an objective study of the institution based on a critical approach is difficult. The current research is an attempt to comprehensively examine different dimensions of the Tulku tradition with an emphasis on the issue of its orthodoxy with respect to the core doctrines of Buddhism and the social implications of the practice. In this research, extreme caution has been practiced to firstly, avoid any kind of bias rooted in faith and belief; and secondly, to follow a scientific methodology in reviewing evidence and scriptures related to the research topic. Through a comprehensive study of historical accounts, core Buddhist texts and hagiographic literature, this study has found that while the basic Buddhist doctrines allow the possibility for a Buddhist teacher or an advanced practitioner to “return back to accomplish his tasks, the lack of any historical precedence which can be viewed as a typical example of the practice in early Buddhism makes the issue of its orthodoxy equivocal and relative. -

THE FOUR DHARMAS OF GAMPOPA This text is based on a transcription of a teaching given by Lama Lhündrub, April 1997 at Kündröl Ling, Le Bost, France Introduction As always at the beginning of a teaching, we develop the aspiration that the teaching may help us towards enlightenment and to become able to help all sentient beings on this path. The teaching is based on: - the Four-themed Precious Garland (chos bzhi rin-chen phreng-ba) by Longchenpa, translated by Alexander Berzin with explanations by H.H. Dudjom R. (chapter III) and by Beru Khyentse Rinpoche (chapter IV) - Die Vier Dharmas des Gampopa , teaching by Urgyen Tulku Rinpoche, Dharmanektar 1+3/89 - teaching by Kalu Rinpoche , German edition pp. 56–67 - Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche Remarks on the Tradition of Mindfulness , Garuda IV - Gampopa's Precious Ornament of Liberation and Precious Rosary . All other teaching is based on explanations that we received from Gendün Rinpoche, who embodies their understanding, and who used the verses of the four dharmas every time he blessed students. The four dharmas present us with an outline of the path, right from the beginning up to the end, buddhahood. An Overview The four dharmas—dvags-po chos bzhi: i) Turning the mind towards the dharma—blo chos su 'gro-ba ii) Following the dharma as a path—chos lam du 'gro-ba iii) The path clarifying confusion—lam 'khrul-pa sel-ba iv) Confusion arising as primordial awareness—'khrul-pa ye-shes su 'char-ba i) The first dharma is ‘Turning the mind to the dharma’. This means that the discursive mind, ‘ blo’ , turns towards the dharma. -

Geshe Etiquette It’s a tremendous honor for the Rime Buddhist Center to host Geshe Tsewang Thinley from the Drepung Gomang Monastery. To make you feel more comfortable and to show Geshe la the respect he deserves, a little protocol & guidelines are in order. ● RESPECT: Respect is rooted in the central insight of the awakening Buddha. When interacting with any monk, it is appropriate to treat him with great respect. He has gone through many years of training and should be accorded treatment as if they were an emanation of the Buddha. ● GESHE IS A TITLE: Geshe Tsewang Thinley has earned a Geshe Lharampa degree from the Drepung Gomang Monastic University. This is a strenuous 23-year program of study and is the equivalent of a Ph.D. in Tibetan Buddhist Philosophy. He should be addressed as Geshe la or Geshe Tsewang Thinley la. The “la” is an honorific term added at the end of a person’s name or title to show respect. ● It is never appropriate to address Geshe la as Rinpoche or Lama. Although these titles have evolved into different meanings in the West, In Tibetan culture, a Lama is a very highly realized tulku (reincarnation) and a rinpoche refers to an incarnate lama or honorific for abbots of monasteries. ● When referring to Geshe la, please show respect by using his title: “Drepung Gomang Geshe in Residence” or simply “Geshe in Residence”. It is extremely disrespectful to refer to him as “The Monk”or “The Rime Center Monk”. ● Geshe la is a fully ordained Tibetan monk. He has taken many vows including that of celibacy.
