Hire and Events About the Museum , the founder of psycho-analysis, was one of the towering intellectual figures of the 20th century. In 1938, he and his family were forced to leave and chose to settle in . Unusually for the time, he managed to bring with him virtually all of his possessions and on arrival was able to recreate the extraordinary environment in which he had worked. His study, which he filled with carefully arranged antiquities, books, oriental rugs, and of course the celebrated psychoanalytic couch, has been described as “one of the most moving and dramatic interiors in London.” Following his death in 1939, Freud’s daughter Anna continued to live and work here. She herself became a pioneer in the field of child analysis and it was her wish that the house become a museum following her death in 1982. The house was re-modelled by Freud’s son Ernst, an architect influenced by the pioneers of the modernist movement. It is a spacious Queen Anne-Style Grade II listed building, set in a leafy, residential street in north London. On sunny days, light pours into the house through the huge bay window on the mezzanine. The beautifully tended garden is the perfect place to relax and contemplate the house and the ideas it contains. The house is well placed in terms of travel connections, being just minutes from Road.

Practical Information The museum is available for hire outside opening hours, namely Mondays, Tuesdays and after 5.30pm on Wednesday to Sunday. We can accommodate between 30 and 80 people, depending on the type of event. Catering facilities are limited, but have been used to good effect to produce anything from cocktail canapés to formal seated dinners. As this is a residential area, we are not able to have amplified music in the house or garden, however it is possible to have one or two musicians playing within the house. Although we cannot recommend individual organisations, we have a document with suggested caterers and other suppliers who have worked successfully here in the past, as well as information on nearby accommodation. We also have a marquee for the garden which can be hired, along with lighting and heaters, if required. We regret that there is no lift inside the museum. However, there is a step-free entrance giving access to the ground floor rooms: Hall, Study, Dining Room, Shop and Toilet. Charges for all types of hire are available on request. Corporate and Private Events The ’s Dining Room provides a sophisticated and atmospheric setting for cocktail parties, receptions, book launches, charity fundraisers and corporate dinners. The museum hosts a changing programme of exhibitions, which are accessible to guests. We’re always happy to show potential party hosts round the museum and discuss your plans. After a recent event, one satisfied client wrote to say that their party had been “a tremendous success … and that everyone was extremely happy with the venue and the helpful staff.”

Meetings and SEMINARS Away from the hustle and bustle of , the offers an oasis of calm where you and your colleagues can get together. The large meeting room overlooking the garden can accommodate up to 30 delegates in a lecture theatre layout or 10-15 delegates if seated at tables. Groups are welcome to use the Dining Room or Exhibition Room as break-out rooms if required. The museum can offer a laptop, data projector and screen, flipchart and so on. Refreshments and other catering can be arranged through the museum.
