Reunion Lunch SUNDAY 8TH MARCH 2020

Welcome

We are delighted that you have returned to South on what is, very appropriately, International Women’s Day 2020. This is also a very special occasion for South Hampstead as we welcome you into our new Waterlow Hall and celebrate the completion of this building.

One of the highlights of our Waterlow Hall fundraising campaign this year has been the connections it has created with our community. Notable alumnae in the arts and former staff, including the late Jean Middlemiss, became ambassadors for the project; four former heads joined us for the Gala Dinner in November; five former heads were present at our Gala Concert for the opening of the hall; and teachers, former parents and alumnae gave generously to our campaign. There has not been a week this year when we haven’t had alumnae in the school giving talks, sharing expertise, teaching or mentoring the current pupils. The involvement of our community in the day to day life of the school is essential and something that gives me great pleasure.

This is the fourth year we have held this Reunion Lunch and the best attended yet, with more than 170 alumnae representing nine decades of the school’s history. In 2026, we will celebrate 150 years since the foundation of the school and, as we look towards this momentous date, I would like to make a particular plea to you all. More than half our alumnae are no longer in touch with the school. If you can help us reconnect with these former pupils then please do, so that everyone can be included in our sesquicentennial celebrations!

But for now, do take this opportunity to catch up with old friends, teachers and former colleagues as we say thank you for everything you do for South Hampstead.

Our concert today is dedicated to Jean Middlemiss (1925 – 2020). Jean was Head of Music at South Hampstead from 1957 – 1972. She was an inspirational teacher and great friend to both staff and pupils. Under her guidance, the school started to develop an extensive music programme and she undoubtedly laid the foundations for the outstanding music department the school has today. She was also a wonderful pastoral leader and will be remembered for her intuition, compassion and kindness. In ‘The Kindling of the Flame’ published in 1975, she wrote: ‘I realised how blessed I had been to spend 15 years in the relatively protected world of South Hampstead, rich in so many ways and particularly in the human relationships which it was possible to build, through the years, with staff and pupils alike. I think it is likely that it will remain my spiritual home.’ She did indeed remain very much at home at South Hampstead and most recently joined us in May for our Music in the Garden event, when several of her former pupils, now professional musicians in their own right, came together to perform with current music scholars. Our Alumnae Choir today came together this morning and, under the expert guidance of our Director of Music – Dr Steve Collisson - will sing a selection of music rehearsed very briefly this morning. The concert will conclude with the school song ‘O Joyful Light’ and we encourage you all to stand and sing with the choir. Come & Sing Choir

The Alumna of the Year award was launched in 2011 to recognise the many varied achievements of the GDST alumnae. Candidates are shortlisted to include those who have achieved outstanding academic or professional success, driven environmental or social change or been pioneers in challenging fields. The winner is voted for by the whole GDST community and last year the award went to the actress Olivia Colman, who attended Norwich High School for Girls. This year, we are delighted to announce that South Hampstead High School alumna Dr Jess Wade (Class of 2007) has been shortlisted for the award. Jess is a research physicist in the Blackett Laboratory at Imperial College London. Alongside her investigations into polymer-based organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), she has become an award-winning champion of women in science and a crusader against gender bias. She has won a myriad of prizes for her work and campaigning and, in 2019, she was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to gender diversity in science. She was also named one of the ‘Most Influential Woman in UK Tech’. To cast your vote for the GDST Alumna of the Year award, please visit: www.gdst. net/aoya. If you would like to vote today, do ask one of our Alumnae Monitors and they will help you. Get involved with South Hampstead

FUTURES PROGRAMME We have teamed up with Rungway to create a bespoke digital mentoring and careers advice platform. Sign up to share your advice and experiences with pupils and contact fellow alumnae for networking opportunities: app.rungway.com/gdst/request-invite Work experience is always sought after and current pupils would love to hear from you if you can offer placements, internships or work programmes. We always welcome lunchtime speakers to talk to our students face-to-face and many alumnae come back to help girls with interview practice for university entrance.

ORGANISE A REUNION In the most recent alumnae survey, you gave ‘Reunions’ the highest prority when it comes to what you want from your former school. We are happy to provide a venue and help you to contact fellow alumnae if you would like to organise your own Year Group reunion - just contact us at [email protected] to find out more.

SHARE YOUR ARCHIVE Our Archivist and former History Teacher, Jo Coates, welcomes any donations of historical material to our archive, whether in physical or digital format.

UPDATE YOUR DETAILS AND HELP US TO REACH OTHERS Our alumnae e-newsletter and Resplendens Magazine are sent to all alumnae on our list, but over half our community is missing out as we don’t have contact email or postal addresses. Do keep your details updated and encourage others to get in touch, either via the alumnae portal at www.gdst.net/alumnae/our-network/ or by contacting us directly at [email protected]. Towards our 150th Anniversary

Our Waterlow Hall project is the first step in our master plan for the future of South Hampstead. As we look towards our 150th anniversary in 2026, our next priority is to extend the outstanding opportunities we can offer at South Hampstead to all girls, regardless of their means. To this end, the governors have committed that any future revenues generated by this wonderful new facility will be invested directly back into our bursary funds. The Girls’ Day School Trust was founded in 1872 to provide education to girls from all backgrounds. Until 1976 and the abolition of the direct-grant scheme, the GDST was the largest provider of free independent school places in the country. Today it still outperforms the independent sector, spending £13 million every year on bursaries. However, there is much more that we can do as a school and as a family of schools to honour the pioneering mission of the GDST. Our ambition at South Hampstead is to double the number of bursary places at our school by 2026 and to work with the GDST to ultimately ensure that all girls can ‘learn without limits’ – limits of gender, limits of opportunity, limits of education and, most importantly, limits of financial means. You can find out more about our future plans in Towards and Beyond our 150th Anniversary at www.shhs.gdst.net/support-us/

BURSARY CONSULTATIONS In April, we will be running a series of consultation coffee mornings at South Hampstead to discuss the legacy of direct grant, assisted places and the future for bursary schemes - we want your views on free school places, how women want to network, guidance on asking women for support and building a culture of philanthropy. If you would like to get involved, please contact [email protected]

SHARE YOUR STORY If you attended South Hampstead with financial assistance, please do share your story. We are putting together case studies to demonstrate the transformative effect of education within the GDST. Read the bursary story of Lara Feigel (Class of 1998) pictured above at www.gdst.net/support/ read-our-alumnae-stories/

JOIN THE MINERVA CIRCLE Remembering South Hampstead in your will is one of the most personal and significant ways you can help secure bursaries in the future. Those who have pledged a legacy become part of the Minerva Circle to recognise your commitment and seek your guidance on future initiatives. Find out more: www.gdst.net/support/gdst-legacy/

MAKE A GIFT Strong community support for bursaries shows our pupils that we believe in them and demonstrates how social and economic diversity in our schools benefits us all. We welcome any and all levels of giving – the key is taking part, so we can proudly share how many of our community have chosen to support us. www.gdst.net/support/support-us/ International World Women’s Day

International Women’s Day, which takes place each year on the 8th March, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Its origins date from the early 20th century and it is widely celebrated across the world. The theme this year is #EachforEqual, and the call is for women individually to take responsibility for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day - actively challenging stereotypes, fighting bias, broadening perceptions, improving situations and celebrating women’s achievements. Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender equal world. South Hampstead alumnae have always been independent, strong-minded and confident women. In recognition of all your achievements, we invite you to take a mimosa sprig from the centre of your table as you leave today. Mimosa is the symbol for International Women’s Day and the yellow colour is symbolic of South Hampstead’s motto, ‘mehr licht’. Thank you for being part of and enriching our community.
