SHCC Head Coach

South Cricket Club (SHCC), based on Milverton Road, was founded in 1865. The club’s four main senior teams compete in the County Cricket League each Saturday, in-season. In addition to this there are competitive and social midweek cricket teams. Our Juniors (Boys and Girls, 5 to 19 years, c. 200 members) play in numerous Leagues, Cups under the Middlesex Colts Association. Training sessions are held for both seniors and junior summer (on the club ground) and winter (in close-by gymnasium)

SHCC seeks to appoint a Head Coach to unify the development of cricket in the club by setting the tone and direction of all coaching. The role is pivotal to ensure that the club’s ambitions at all level of participation are achieved.

Regarding Junior Cricket at SHCC, the Head Coach would work and lead the junior coaching staff at SHCC. Our coaching staff vary between volunteers and paid coaches (individuals qualified with many years of experience) through to those starting out on their coaching journey. Paid coaches are contracted directly by SHCC, but the Head Coach would be expected to advise on the suitability of coaches and use their network when necessary to attract additional coaching talent to the club.

Regarding Senior Cricket at SHCC, the Head Coach will work with club captains and the existing conditioning trainer to develop and improve the all-round skills and capabilities of players participating in competitive senior cricket on behalf of SHCC. The Head Coach will ensure that the competitive senior teams play a brand of cricket which, not only excites fans and members but ensures that SHCC has the best possible chance, each year, of maintaining or improving the club’s Middlesex County Cricket league status.

The role will require presence at the club of circa 4 hours per week out of season and circa 9 hours per week in season. The exact timings and commitment will be agreed with the successful candidate.

Required Skills & Experience

1. ECB Level 2 (preferably Level 3) or equivalent with up-to-date ancillary certificates such as: DBS, First Aid and Safeguarding Young Cricketers 2. Excellent inter-personal and communication skills 3. Ability to identify, coach, develop and inspire volunteer coaches 4. The candidate will have knowledge and understanding of ECB Child Welfare policy (Safe Hands) procedures in relation to coaching responsibilities 5. The candidate will be aware and keep up-to-date with all relevant ECB and club rules and guidance (e.g. coaching ratios, health & safety, financial management.) 6. The candidate must attend appropriate courses and/or keep refreshed and up to date with modern best practice and thinking online, 7. The candidate will be an organised individual, able to organise others to achieve agreed short, medium and long-term objectives. 8. The candidate will be able to perform all duties in an equitable manner and to actively promote the principles of equality amongst fellow coaches and appropriate adults 9. The candidate will encourage all players to act in a sporting manner and ensure that the “spirit of the game” is always promoted. 10. To understand and adhere to relevant club standards, rules, regulations, policies, procedures relating to health & safety, financial management and control.

11. Preference will be given to a candidate that wishes to integrate wholeheartedly into the life of a friendly and ambitious club and also has played at a high standard of the game.

Junior Cricket - Key responsibilities

1. To plan, write and lead an inclusive, annual (indoor/outdoor), player-centred junior coaching programme appropriate to players of varying age, ability and needs. 2. Set the tone and philosophy for club coaching sessions, for all others to adopt 3. Take charge of large junior coaching sessions (coaching session with more than three groups), allocating coaches to squads, ensuring consistency in coaching and ensuring cricketing standards are being improved at every level 4. Input into small coaching sessions: sometimes coaching directly, sometimes supervising the work of other coaches 5. Develop a bridge between the senior programme and those juniors capable of playing senior cricket 6. Be the face of the club, showing professionalism, loyalty and integrity in all club matters 7. Have a willingness to work beyond the contracted hours when the occasion demands 8. Act as the coach's representative to the Club Committee and parents

Senior Cricket - Key responsibilities

1. To outline senior team performance targets with the conditioning trainer and club captains (competitive senior men’s teams only). 2. To develop and deliver a structured and comprehensive programme of cricket coaching initiatives and other relevant development activities to: - Achieve senior team performance targets - fully develop the cricketing potential of current and future players within the club. 3. To develop and maintain a strong and effective working relationship with the annual club First XI captain to ensure that the senior cricket-related activities throughout the club remain focussed and successful. 4. To work closely with the club’s team selection committee to select the strongest First XI and Second XI teams available and to do everything possible for these teams to always play to the height of their potential given the opposition and the playing conditions that prevail. 5. To work closely with the First XI captain, Second XI captain and the Head Groundsman to plan the use of and to prepare cricket pitches to the best standard that the conditions will allow for all club matches played at Milverton Road. 6. To be present at as many First XI matches as possible. 7. To identify to club captains and the selection committee, any players from the Juniors’ programmes who should be considered for selection in senior teams. 8. To set and continually monitor appropriate objectives/targets with respect to players’ playing mindset, cricketing skills and fitness in conjunction with his colleagues. 9. To conduct pre-season, mid-season and end of season reviews on the performances of the club’s players with the selection committee and club Chairman. 10. To bring to the attention of the Club Chairman any disputes, potential hazards, other problems or difficulties that affect (or could affect) the operations of the club. 11. To ensure that players’ make themselves available to play where selected, and that they not only give their best effort on the field of play but also that they adhere to relevant club standards, rules and regulations, policies and procedures at all times
