Diabetic Eye Screening Service Staffordshire
Diabetic retinopathy is caused when diabetes affects the small blood vessels in the retina (the part of the eye that acts like a film in a camera). Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of sight loss in the working age population. Retinopathy will progress with time but may not cause symptoms until it is quite advanced and close to affecting a person's sight. This is a national screening programme run at a local level in accredited optician practices across Staffordshire. Our service management centre team, based in Stafford, comprises of a clinical lead (specialist doctor), ophthalmology support doctor, specialist optometrist, programme manager, service manager and nine administrators. We work closely with your GP and hospital eye service colleagues to ensure timely referral and treatment for those requiring further care. The service invites all people with diabetes from age 12 years to attend for an annual screening test, and for those who need a more advanced examination, we provide a Slit Lamp and Digital Surveillance screening service. You may need to be screened more often if you are pregnant or require a Digital Surveillance screening test.

INFORMATION PRESCRIPTIONS - LIVING WELL What is an information prescription? Information prescriptions are designed to give people with diabetes the information they need to understand and improve on their health targets. They are based on the three things a doctor or nurse measures in routine appointments that can put people at high risk of complications:
High blood pressure High cholesterol High HbA1c
How will my information prescription help me? Working with your doctor or nurse you can use the information prescription to identify the steps you can take towards a better future with diabetes. By improving your results and taking control of your diabetes, you can dramatically lower your risk of experiencing complications. It will also help you feel fitter, more energetic and healthier.
