The Clara Whorley Hasslock Collection (1884-1973) is centered around Clara Whorley Hasslock (1884-1975), teacher and author; member of a Nashville, Tennessee family; nutritionist; and a resident of Milledgeville and Albany, ; Seymour, Texas; and Nashville, Tennessee. The collection is a gift of Clara Whorley Hasslock. The materials in this finding aid measure 8.2 cubic feet. There are no restrictions on the materials. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in the Clara Whorley Hasslock Collection may be made for purposes of scholarly research.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Clara Whorley Hasslock Collection, spanning the years 1884-1973, is composed of associations, institutions, certificates, diplomas, cards, clippings, correspondence, financial records, genealogical data, maps, photographs, drawings, et al., diaries, memoirs, et al., invitations, notes, obituaries, passes, printed material, programs, school records, sketches, memorabilia, tributes, vital statistics, writings and several miscellaneous items. The bulk of the collection is comprised of clippings, correspondence, and materials reflecting Clara Hasslock’s life as a teacher, nutritionist, and author. Miss Hasslock was a teacher of Domestic Science at Georgia State College for Women at Milledgeville, Georgia (1913-1947). She founded several organizations and collected a variety of material from Georgia. The correspondence is mostly from professional colleagues, former students, and family, all with high tribute for her as an inspiring teacher and a person with great integrity. A majority of the family correspondence is comprised of letters from the George Radford Mayfield, Sr. family (1917-1964) and the George Radford Mayfield, Jr. family (1944-1975). There are clippings, correspondence, photographs, etc., on Georgia State College for Women located in Milledgeville, Georgia. The bulk of the printed materials (bulletins, publications) are materials collected from churches and universities where Miss Hasslock taught or attended. Among the photographs is a cart-de-visite of George Washington Carver. Miss Hasslock visited the Tuskegee Institute in July, 1926 at which time Professor Carver gave her a tour of his laboratory. Miss Hasslock collected a great many materials (maps, tour guides, clippings, photographs, etc.) of historical sites and people in Georgia. The following printed materials were transferred to the Tennessee State Library: History of Home Economics in Georgia, All the Way the Lord Hath Led Us, The One Hundred Years of the Old Governor’s Mansion, Pageant Book, A Treasure Album of Milledgeville and Baldwin County, Georgia. The Twenty-Ninth Annual Report of the Trustees of the Cooper Union. Miss Clara Hasslock has also donated the book Pegasus Limping written by her sister, Augusta Thelka (Hasslock) Kemp, (1882-1963). This book was compiled, edited, and published by Miss Hasslock after Mrs. Kemp’s death. It is a collection of poems, essays, reminiscences, etc., that Mrs. Kemp wrote for her nephew, George Radford Mayfield, Jr., when he was seven years old.
