We hope that this journal, an academic publication in the form of a digest, will give academics and specialists the opportunity to share with the broad public the results of their research studies on the political, economic, legal, and social problems of the Caucasian Region in correlation with the globalization processes. It goes without saying that there is an acute shortage of thought-provoking scientific and analyt- ical digests among the great abundance of various printed matter. And this is no accident. All of us, the peoples of the Caucasus, are busy restoring our statehood, building relations with the world around us, and forming new political, economic, and social orders, while trying to respect and pre- serve our history, culture, and independence. Our minds are occupied with the region’s hot spots— Karabakh, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Chechnia, Ingushetia, and Daghestan—because we are well aware that without rapid and fair settlement of these conflicts, we cannot become full-fledged states and self-respecting nations. We have too much going on. Nevertheless, the rebirth of our states also presupposes the creation of new paradigmatic ap- proaches to and analytical views on history, politics, the economy, culture, and religion. We must come to terms with ourselves, understand who we are, define who we want to be, and identify how best to attain our goals and follow our chosen path. We must first comprehend all of this ourselves, and then present it to the rest of the world at a level it can understand and accept. The Caucasus & Globalization, which covers the most diverse areas of social studies, will be published quarterly in English and Russian. The first issue includes articles by members of the edito- rial board, which is made up of well-known academics from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Japan, Russia, Sweden, Turkey, and the U.S. I am inviting academics, specialists, and all our readers to cooperate with us, and hope that you will not only find the articles in this first issue interesting, but also very beneficial. Nazim MUZA ARLI (IMANOV) Editor-in-Chief Vol. 1 (1), 2006 7 THE CAUCASUS & GLOBALIZATION GEOPOLITICS Eldar ISMAILOV Director of the Institute of Strategic Studies of the Caucasus, Chairman of the Editorial Council of Central Asia and the Caucasus Journal. His experience also embraces work at the Baku Institute of Public Administration and Political Science (currently—Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Azerbaijan Republic) as head of the Department of Social Administration and Management (1991- 1997). He is also founder and president of the Transcaucasus Development Bank. He is the author of more than 50 academic works on geo-economics, macroeconomics, economic-mathematical modeling and public administration of socioeconomic processes. His most recent work Tsentral’niy Kavkaz i ekonomika Gruzii (The Central Caucasus and Economy of Georgia) (2004) was published in co-authorship with Vladimer Papava and Teymuraz Beridze.     “I T’S IN GEORGIA ’S INTEREST TO BE FRIENDLY WITH RUSSIA ” Interview with Dr. Alexander Rondeli ∗ Conducted by Jesse Tatum, Associate Editor of CRIA CRIA: Considering the expected removal of the EU’s special representative to the South Caucasus and the recent visit of the EU’s High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs to Georgia, what sort of changes would you say are on the horizon for the EU–Georgia relationship? Rondeli : From Georgia’s point of view the complicated process of integration with European structures and the Europeanization of Georgia is a long one. It’s not easy to go through not only because of weaknesses in and problems with our own development, but also because of the EU’s policy, that is, the policy of certain leading countries in the EU, and EU–Russia relations. It’s not only a process whereby you get ready, then you are ready [and the EU says], “please be our guest, be our member.” On both fronts we have serious problems, because for any post-Soviet country, meeting the EU’s requirements is not easy. The Baltic [countries] are the exception for many reasons, for many good reasons, and we are happy that at least they are there. They are also a fantastic example and a role model for us. But meeting these criteria is not easy. Everyone understands that there is a long way to go. The second dimension of this is just as complicated because the EU is not united, especially from the point of view of foreign policy and military strategy.

Growing out of the history of social, psychological, and moral-philosophical delineations of class in former USSR, the tension between two aesthetic/ethical stances was brought to a particularly stark relief, and given a new interpretation, in a recent contestation of public space in a mid-size industrial Russian city. The article explores how the intellectualist and, especially, the dystopic mode of engagement with the world is juxtaposed with the “sensory utopia” sensibility that asserts not only the givenness but the goodness and the necessity of sensory and emotional embeddedness in one’s physical and social reality, as well as the obligation to strive for and to defend the right to uncomplicated pleasures. Instead of condemning the latter as reactionist recourse to “simpler pasts” growing out of traumas of postsocialism, I suggest exploring it as a phenomenon in its own right, a cultural resource, and an optimistic ground for the development of new urban, civic, and secular identities and collectivities.
