Endangered Research Guide

Research guide is located online at Http://www.vvschools.org UH. Click on “Media Centers” on the top bar, “Middle School Media Center”, “Research guides for projects and homework”. Click on your subject.

Print Resources: Books:

To locate books use the online catalog. If you are new to the catalog, listen to the video tutorial first.

Open the catalog and click on the "search" tab. Do a SUBJECT search for your topic.

Insects, reptiles, birds, amphibians, mammals can be found in the call number range 590 to 599.9 (zoology). Items in the non- fiction section check out.

Print Resources:Reference: There are some great articles in the reference section. Reference books do not check out, but you can get a photocopy of what you need. Some recommended titles are:

There are numerous other books and field guides in the reference section, call number range 593 to 599.9 for insects, fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, etc..

Print Resources: Encyclopedias: Two different sets behind the librarian’s desks. The World Book Encyclopedia will list genus and species at the end of the article. Also, look under “Classification” for a kingdom chart.

Electronic Resources: Online Databases: Available through the School Library Systems Database website at http://www.moboces.org/Page/181. See your librarian for ID and passwords.

Grolier Online- Contains articles from two encyclopedia sets: Grolier Multimedia and The New Book of Knowledge

● The IUCN Redlist of (International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) - Searchable database by kingdom, region, country, etc. of over 15,000 species. http://www.iucnredlist.org/

● World Wildlife Species- Provides description of of some animals. Search the site or click on the “Species” tab. http://www.worldwildlife.org/species

● ARKive: Discover the World’s Most Endangered Species- Provides information on endangered animals by a non-profit organization. http://www.arkive.org

● Animal Diversity Web A searchable database compiled by The University of Michigan. Contains general information on animals including classification. Put in the search term "endangered" and you will get a list of over 1,800 items. http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/

● Blue Planet Biomes- World map of biomes with description, plants, animals, and temperature. http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/world_biomes.htm

Or use a search directory or engine such as Http://www.yahoo.com or Http://wwwgoogle.com and put in your subject. Remember to check your website source to see if it is reliable…. F.A.C.E. IT!

Search tip: Put in the scientific name of your animal using the genus and species.
