Darimont 1,2 and Christina N. Service 1,2,3 ABSTRACT. Environmental management (EM) requires indicators to inform objectives and monitor the impacts or efficacy of management practices. One common approach uses “functional ecological” indicators, which are typically species whose presence or abundance are tied to functional ecological processes, such as nutrient productivity and availability, trophic interactions, and habitat connectivity. In contrast, and used for millennia by Indigenous peoples, biocultural indicators are rooted in local values and place- based relationships between nature and people. In many landscapes today where Indigenous peoples are reasserting sovereignty and governance authority over natural resources, the functional ecological approach to indicator development does not capture fundamental values and ties to the natural world that have supported social-ecological systems over the long term. Accordingly, we argue that the development and use of biocultural indicators to shape, monitor, and evaluate the success of EM projects will be critical to achieving ecological and social sustainability today. We have provided a framework composed of criteria to be considered when selecting and applying meaningful and efficacious biocultural indicators among the diverse array of potential species and values. We used a case study from a region now referred to as coastal British Columbia, Canada, to show how the suggested application of functional ecological indicators by the provincial government created barriers to the development of meaningful cogovernance. -

Sanders, Dean of Graduate Studies Date Abstract Habitat fragmentation is an important subject of research needed by park management planners, particularly for conservation management. The Castle Parks, in southwest Alberta, Canada, exhibit extensive habitat fragmentation from recreational and resource use activities. Umbrella and keystone species within The Castle Parks include grizzly bears, wolverines, cougars, and elk which are important animals used for conservation agendas to help protect the matrix of the ecosystem. This study identified and analyzed the nature of habitat fragmentation within The Castle Parks for these species, and has identified geographic areas of habitat fragmentation concern. This was accomplished using remote sensing, ArcGIS, and statistical analyses, to develop models of fragmentation for ecosystem cover type and Digital Elevation Models of slope, which acted as proxies for species habitat suitability. -

In northern Europe, a long history of anthropogenic land use has led to profound changes within forest ecosystems. One of the proposed approaches for conservation and restoration of forest biodiversity is the use of umbrella species, whose conservation would confer protection to large numbers of naturally co-occurring species. This thesis aims to evaluate some of the prerequisites to the umbrella species concept, focusing on resident birds in hemiboreal and boreal forests. The study was performed in four areas belonging to the southern Baltic Sea region: central and southern Sweden, south-central Lithuania and northeastern Poland. A review of empirical evaluations of the umbrella species concept performed in various systems suggested that multispecies approaches addressing the requirements of both the umbrellas and the beneficiary species have better potential than approaches based coarsely on the area needs of single species. An analysis of co-occurrence patterns among resident forest birds in landscape units of 100 ha showed that some species reliably indicated high species richness through their presence. -

'Extinct' frog is last survivor of its lineage The rediscovered Hula painted frog is alive and well in Israel. Ed Yong 04 June 2013 Frank Glaw The newly renamed Latonia nigriventer, which lives in an Israeli nature reserve, may be the only surviving species in its genus. In 1996, after four decades of failed searches, the Hula painted frog became the first amphibian to be declared extinct by an international body — a portent of the crisis that now threatens the entire class. But it seems that reports of the creature’s death had been greatly exaggerated. In October 2011, a living individual was found in Israel’s Hula Nature Reserve, and a number of others have since been spotted. “I hope it will be a conservation success story,” says Sarig Gafny at the Ruppin Academic Center in Michmoret, Israel, who led a study of the rediscovered animal. “We don’t know anything about their natural history and we have to study them. The more we know, the more we can protect them.” Gafny's team has not only rediscovered the frog, but also reclassified it. It turns out that the Hula painted frog is the last survivor of an otherwise extinct genus, whose other members are known only through fossils. The work appears today in Nature Communications1. “It’s an inspiring example of the resilience of nature, if given a chance,” says Robin Moore, who works for the Amphibian Specialist Group of the the International Union for Conservation of Nature in Arlington, Virginia, and has accompanied Gafny on frog-finding trips. -

According to the data collected in this mini-review and from some unpublished data, it was found that the adaptation of amphibian species from arid to Mediterranean climates was highest for Bufovariabilis, followed by Triturusvittatus,Hylasavignyi, Pelobatessyriacus, Rana bedriagae and Latonia nigriventer. Many parameters affecting adaptation to different habitats have been described, including aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Among them, the most important parameters affecting semi-arid and arid habitats are the large number of tadpoles, the short growth and complete metamorphosis period, finding hiding places to prevent dehydration, and physiological adaptation to accumulate urea in the body fluid.
