Yunnan Province, also known as “Yun” or “Dian”, is located in the far Southwest , inhabited by some 26 ethnic minorities. The Province borders on in the west, and Laos and Vietnam in the south, with a length of 4,060 km boundary line. has long been a crucial gateway to Southeast Asia, with its relatively close proximity to Thailand, Cambodia, Bangladesh and India. Thanks to its geographical location, Yunnan has become the largest trading body in China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (“CAFTA”).

Since the launch of CAFTA on 1 January, 2010, the average tariff rate on ASEAN goods sold in China decreased from 9.8% to 0.1%. In 2012, Yunnan’s exports to ASEAN accounted for more than 42% of the Province’s export total, recording an annual growth rate of 3.6%. In addition, Hong Kong, India, Japan and the US are the major export markets for Yunnan. In particular, Yunnan’s exports to Hong Kong grew by 546.9% to USD 3.8 billion in 2012.

The -Mengzi Railway opened to commercial service on 24 February, 2014 and has become a crucial part of the Trans-Asian Railway. Furthermore, construction of the Mengzi-Hekou Railway is expected to be completed by the end of 2014. Integration of the above railway sections will shorten travel time between Hekou and to 3 hours. The expanding land route from China to ASEAN is believed to help develop the Southeast Asian market and to add momentum to Yunnan’s economic growth.

Ruili is located in the border of Yunnan and Myanmar. Border trade and tourism have become its key industries. Port is China's biggest land border trade port with Myanmar, connecting to Myanmar’s national port Muse. The total volume of imports and exports in Ruili port accounts for more than 60% of Yunnan’s trade with Myanmar, or about 30% of China's trade with Myanmar. Products exported to Myanmar are redirected to Bangladesh, India and other countries.

Yunnan has made use of its location advantage, uniqueness in local culture and improving infrastructure to boost its trade in services as well as border trades. The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce will organize a delegation to Yunnan Province from 2 to 5 December, 2014. During the visit, members will learn about the latest development and investment opportunities in the emerging Province.
