CHAPTER FOUR POLITICAL AND LEGAL PROVISIONS If we were to draw from textual representations, the contemporary reli- gious position of a Buddhist nun is difficult to define since she is neither upāsikā (pious laywoman), as her “other-worldly” mendicant lifestyle sig- nifies otherwise, nor is she sāmanerī (female novice) since she cannot be a monastic apprentice in a true sense of the word. In other words, the religious position of a Buddhist nun is “betwixt and between,” “incom- plete” or “half-way,” especially when attempts are made to define it in terms of her deficiency in relation to the official status of a monk. Salgado describes this problem in stating that: “Previous studies have defined the liminal position of nuns by contrasting them to both laity and sangha (the fully ordained community of monastics), without fully exploring the status of the “renunciant” (pāvidi/pabbajjā) . .” (2004:936). She has drawn our attention to some of the distinct features of female renunciation that cannot be understood simply by comparing and contrasting it with the ideal of male renunciation (Salgado, 2000, 2004). Today there is no ordained bhikkhunī lineage in Myanmar. The high- est Buddhist authority: the Supreme Sangha Council has made an official statement in 2004 reaffirming this position of the sangha.1 On the other hand, there are many thiláshin—close to 45,000 of them in 2010, registered with the Department of Religious Affairs of the Religious Ministry. The large presence of these nuns despite the absence of the bhikkhunī lineage gives us a reason to examine how these nuns are defined and accepted in their social and political contexts. -

Journal (2005) Vol. 4(1) 71 Lowland Festivities in a Highland Society: Songkran in the Palaung Village of Pang Daeng Nai, Thailand1 Sean Ashley* Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada *Corresponding author E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT In this article, I examine the celebration of Songkran in the Palaung village of Pang Daeng Nai in northern Thailand. The Palaung, a Mon-Khmer speaking people from Burma, have a long tradition of Theravada Buddhism which can be seen in a number of rituals and ceremonies associated with Songkran. While the Palaung have acquired both Buddhism and the Songkran festival from neighboring lowland populations, many practices and beliefs have taken on a local character in the process of transmission. In my paper, I discuss the similarities and differences between Palaung and lowland Tai Songkran ritual observances, particularly with regards to the annual song krau ceremony, a village-wide exorcism/blessing which coincides with the festival. Key words: Songkran festival, Song krau ceremony, Buddhism INTRODUCTION “True ‘Hill People’ are never Buddhists” (Leach, 1960). So wrote Edmund Leach in a paper describing the differences between highland minority groups in Burma and their lowland Tai2 and Burmese neighbors. This understanding of highlander culture is widespread and most studies on highland religion use Buddhism simply as grounds for comparison or ignore its influence on highland traditions altogether. In fact, both highlanders and lowlanders share an “animistic” worldview (Spiro, 1967; Terweil, 1994), but it is not my intention to deny that Theravada Buddhism, a ubiquitous facet of life in the lowlands, is largely absent from highland cultures. -

The Revival of the Bhikkhunī Order and the Decline of the Sāsana Bhikkhu Anālayo 1 Abstract In this article I study the revival of the bhikkhunī order in the Theravāda traditions and its supposed relation to a decline of the Buddha’s dispensation. Introduction My presentation begins with the contrast between the positive evalua- tion of the existence of an order of bhikkhunīs in early Buddhist discourse and the “prediction of decline,” according to which the establishing of this order would result in a decline of the Buddha’s dispensation (sāsana). Fritsch,3 and 2 IMBRICATE GROUP OF Suhua Shi STYRAX SERIES CYRTA (STYRACACEAE) IN ASIA1 ABSTRACT Several taxonomic treatments of Styrax (Styracaceae) exist in regional ¯oras of Asia, but the Asian species of the genus have not been comprehensively revised since 1907. To help rectify this, we conducted a taxonomic revision of the Asian species of Styrax series Cyrta with imbricate corolla aestivation. Our revision comprises 17 species with a combined distribution from Japan south to Sumatra and west to Nepal. The circumscriptions of the heretofore poorly de®ned species S. hookeri and S. serrulatus are clari®ed. Styrax agrestis var. curvirostratus is elevated to the species level, and lectotypes are selected for S. duclouxii, S. ¯oribundus, S. hemsleyanus, S. hookeri, S. hookeri var. yunnanensis, S. hypoglaucus, S. japonicus, S. limprichtii, S. macranthus, S. obassia, S. perkinsiae, S. serrulatus var. latifolius, S. shiraianus, S. supaii, and S. wilsonii. Thai-Burmese warfare during the sixteenth century 69 THAI-BURMESE WARFARE DURING THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY AND THE GROWTH OF THE FIRST TOUNGOO EMPIRE1 Pamaree Surakiat Abstract A new historical interpretation of the pre-modern relations between Thailand and Burma is proposed here by analyzing these relations within the wider historical context of the formation of mainland Southeast Asian states. The focus is on how Thai- Burmese warfare during the sixteenth century was connected to the growth and development of the first Toungoo empire. An attempt is made to answer the questions: how and why sixteenth century Thai-Burmese warfare is distinguished from previous warfare, and which fundamental factors and conditions made possible the invasion of Ayutthaya by the first Toungoo empire. Introduction As neighbouring countries, Thailand and Burma not only share a long border but also have a profoundly interrelated history. During the first Toungoo empire in the mid-sixteenth century and during the early Konbaung empire from the mid-eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries, the two major kingdoms of mainland Southeast Asia waged wars against each other numerous times.
