IN THIS ISSUE Welcome Back to top

Welcome A very warm welcome to my first Newsletter as Secretary – rest assured that if you’re unhappy with any of the content, it almost certainly happened on Simon’s watch and Olympic Gold Medal he’s to blame! Except for the golden Olympic news, of course, that unfolded in August following my arrival! OC While on the subject of Simon, I am sure you would all want me to express your thanks OC News for all that he has done for the Society over so many years; and personally I owe him OC Sporting News an enormous debt of gratitude for the wise, entertaining and generous counsel he has provided over the Summer. OCs in Print It’s a great pleasure to be an editor at last, and I hope that what we manage to include In Memoriam in the Newsletters will be informative and interesting. I intend to adhere to my predecessor’s well established cycle of sending three per year, and obviously we are Provisional Events reliant on OC’s actually telling us what they are doing. This is very much the forum for Programme keeping your community [the OCS] up to date. The Cliftonian Society is now the umbrella term for a number of interconnected activities, but this in no way detracts from Miscellanea our desire for the alumni – the OC’s – to be able to interact as alumni. Keep in Touch

Olympic Gold Medal Back to top

On August 6th, 2016, Lily Owsley [WT 2013] made a little bit of history when she became the first female OC to become an Olympian, when she played against Australia in the opening Group B Hockey fixture at the Rio Olympics.

Thirteen days later, she made history on a much grander scale when she became the first Cliftonian to win a Gold Medal at any Olympics, when she featured in the penalty shoot-out victory against the Netherlands.

Lily scored twice in the Group games, again in the Quarter Final romp against Spain and then the final itself.

Lily joined the Pre in 2006, and went through West Town in the Upper School, before heading for the University of Birmingham. When she arrived at Clifton, she was in fact a footballer, but she caught the hockey bug and went on to play for the school and the national age-group teams with distinction. A formidable athlete, Lily managed to master the intricacies of hockey in double quick time, and her remarkable success has come

as no great surprise to those who coached or played with her at Clifton. She also managed to win a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games for England.

Congratulations, Lily! A great moment for you and your family, and also for us here in Bristol as we bathe in some reflected glory! And good luck with your second year at Birmingham – we hope you complete it in the more usual time frame!

And finally, some Clifton Olympic questions [answers in Miscellanea below]:

1. Name the member of staff who competed as an Olympic hurdler. 2. Name the Oakeley's boy who managed the Nigerian Olympic team at Helsinki in 1952. 3. Name the Head Master who served on the committee that set up the modern Olympics.

OC Cricket Back to top

Commem Cricket – The Charlie Colquhoun Plate

The sun was shining and a young OC XI batted first in this year's 20/20 version of the traditional Commem fixture.

A competitive afternoon ensued, with the OC innings underpinned by 65 off 45 balls from Tom Smith. The target of 140 was demanding, and the School XI never quite managed to get on terms, finishing their 20 overs on 119 – only Louie Shaw [NT] with 38 threatened to scupper an OC victory.

Cricketer Cup

Rain badly interfered with this year's campaign, necessitating re-arranged fixtures and much-altered line-ups for every outing. A first round victory over St Edward's Martyrs was achieved at the second attempt, which pitched us into a tie against a strong Cranleigh XI. Again, it needed a second Sunday to resolve the match, and we unfortunately lost by 6 wickets in the 45th over.

Cricket Week 2016

This was an immensely successful week – the sun shone most of the time; OC faces old and new turned out both for us and some of our opponents; and the standard was good, with a competitive edge.

Monday – thrilling last over win against the Clifton Badgers. Tuesday – thrilling win against The Flaming Sambucas with 1 ball to spare. Wednesday – dominant victory against the Old Bristolians. Thursday – fell 34 runs short against the Gloucester Gypsies. Friday – fell 53 runs short against the Free Foresters.

Congratulations to Andrew Nethsingha [WaH 1985]

Congratulations to [NT 1958] who is to Receive Rose d’Or Lifetime Achievement Award

British actor, comedian and OC John Cleese will be honored with the Rose d’Or Award for lifetime achievement at the 55th annual ceremony, to be held in Berlin on September 13.

Cleese began his career in the mid-1960s. He is renowned for his television work as part of the Monty Python team and for his self-penned sitcom Fawlty Towers. He is also widely recognized for appearances in films such as Clockwise and A Fish Called Wanda, as well as the Harry Potter series.

Cleese commented: “I am delighted by this chance to annoy Terry Gilliam and I’m also very humbled by the offer of an all-expenses-paid holiday in Berlin.”

The media director at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Jean Philip De Tender, said: “The EBU believes no one is more deserving of the Rose d’Or lifetime achievement award than John Cleese. He has been making audiences around the world laugh for 50 years and his writing and instantly recognizable performances have contributed to some of the best and funniest entertainment on television and in film.”

Rose d’Or compère BBC broadcaster Paddy O’Connell added: “John Cleese helped

invent TV entertainment—but has never forgotten the producers who put him on the screen. He knows the business inside out as writer, actor and performer. He’s a rare public figure in the English-speaking world for learning German as a young man and told Der Spiegel he only wished it was his first language. For these reasons and thousands more, including a dead parrot, he’s the perfect fit to pick up the Rose d’Or lifetime achievement award in Berlin.” 1862 Club celebrates its third Annual Lunch – 6th May 2016

The third annual lunch of the 1862 Club was held on 6th May and saw the sun shining on the Close offering a magnificent view of the College from the Cricket Pavilion.

The largest gathering so far, over 30, enjoyed an excellent meal prepared by the School Caterers before being welcomed by the new Head Master, Dr Tim Greene.

Harleyford Golf Day – 25th September 2016

2 Honorary OCs from Kingstown GC had to leave straight after playing golf and we

thank them for playing for us.

This was the second time the OCGS was invited to play at Harleyford, near Marlow. We all had a great time on the much improved golf course (from last year) and Rob Marsh generously provided all the drinks for us at the excellent meal, after the golf and indeed, for some, during the golf. We had a fun competition among ourselves and the winners were as follows: nearest the pin on 12th hole John Dyson; longest drive on the 17th (on the fairway) Tony Williams; first stableford score Tony Williams (probably with being given too many gimmes); second was Mike Fawcett with 37 points; third was Robin King with 35 points; 4th= with 32 points Andy Rosser and Mike Innes.

Thought must be given as to how we can attract a larger number of golfers from the Home Counties and around the Bristol area for next year as we all had a very enjoyable day out that Sunday.

Andy Rosser, Mike Fawcett, Robert Skinner, Robert Dyson, Mike Innes, Rob Marsh,John Dyson; front row Robin King, Stephen Lapage, Tony Williams and Matt Biddle
