Upper School Music Teachers - Biographies

Dan Robson Director of Music, -Baritone Dan was born in in 1982 and had a reasonable voice as a youngster – and although he refused to audition to be a chorister, he was lucky enough to sing with English National (one of the three boys in Mozart’s Magic Flute, as well as child roles in DanBizet’s Robson Carmen and Strauss Der Rosenkavalier) and to perform with the RSC and National Theatre (The Wind in the Willows). He read music at Magdalen College Oxford, where he was a Choral Scholar and sang six services per week with the chapel . Graduating with Directorfirst class honours of Music, in 2004, he Bass-Baritone moved to London and studied with Janice Chapman; currently he learns with Margaret Thomas.

He is a Lay Clerk at Cathedral, recently singing as bass soloist for BBC1’s Christmas Day live broadcast in 2016. Dan has performed several works by Bach, including the Magnificat (Oxford Spezzati), Christmas Oratorio (Thornbury Choral Society), Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen BWV 56 at and Pilate in the St John Passion with various groups. He is also a keen singer of English repertoire, performing Vaughan Williams’ Sea Symphony (London Oratory Choral Society) and Five Mystical Songs (various), as well as the Baritone solo role in the UK premier of Jonathan Willcock’s “From Darkness to Light: A Requiem of Hope”. Recent performances have included the virtuosic bass solo in CPE Bach’s Magnificat (November 2017) and a solo lunchtime recital of Vaughan Williams and Wolf at Bristol Cathedral (December 2017). Dan has been Director of Music at Clifton since 2012.

James Drinkwater MA FRCO LRSM Assistant Director of Music and College Organist James's responsibilities at Clifton include teaching academic music, coaching chamber ensembles, musically directing theatrical productions and the orchestra, and serving as the College Organist on the 4-manual Harrison and Harrison in the chapel. He enjoys composing and arranging for school concerts, recent creations ranging from a quintuple-time version of 'God rest ye merry gentlemen' for jazz trombone and clarinet with strings, to a Toccatina for organ on 'Summer nights' (Grease). He will appear alongside pupil organists and the college on a CD to be released later in 2018 to celebrate the addition of the 12

new Double Ophicleide 32ft reed pipes to the College organ, the campaign for which James led and which was undertaken in honour of Sir (1919-2015), Old Cliftonian.

Outside of Clifton he has given solo recitals at Truro and Bristol cathedrals, Exeter College Oxford, and . He is President-elect of the Bristol and District Organists' Association. James is also a keen piano accompanist, and has appeared in this role at festivals around the country and on BBC television and radio. He is an English tripos graduate of Pembroke College Cambridge, and a prize-winning Fellow of the of Organists. Sara Temple Head of Woodwind; Clarinet

Sara read music at King’s College, Cambridge. She continued her studies with a Masters of Music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and completed her training at the Hochschule für Musik, Karlsruhe with Wolfgang Meyer.

DanSara has Robson had a busy career as a clarinet soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. UK recitals include the Wigmore Hall, Queen DirectorElizabeth Hall, of Bridgewater Music, Hall Bass-Baritone and the Edinburgh Festival. Sara is a member of the English Symphony Orchestra and has also played for the Verbier Festival Orchestra based in Switzerland and the Southbank Sinfonia in London. She has freelanced with many UK orchestras including the English National Opera, the LCO and London Symphony Orchestra Discovery. Highlights from Sara’s orchestral playing overseas includes engagements with the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada in Spain and the Heilbronn Kammerorchester and Philharmonie Baden-Baden in Germany. She has also performed in contemporary music Festivals in Stuttgart, Germany and Belo Horizonte, Brazil. She was winner of the Worshipful Company of Dyers Award for Woodwind and Brass in the Royal Overseas League Competition.

Sara Temple has been Head of Woodwind and Brass at Clifton College since September 2008. As part of this role she teaches the clarinet, and coaches and conducts various chamber ensembles and orchestras. She also runs a clarinet and saxophone day for schools in the South West.

Tim Angel Voice

Tim Angel trained as a Counter- in the UK having graduated from Leeds and later from Reading with a Masters in Music Education. He enjoys a career spanning Teaching, Classical and Popular Performing, Adjudicating, Choir Directing, Orchestral Conducting and Composition. included Judas in Handel’s Baroque Passion, King Arthur with Deller Consort. He has made over 20 recordings with various Choirs and has appeared on film soundtracks of “To Kill a King” and “Elizabeth”. His TV appearances include “The Lost Buildings of Britain” and Radio performances include recitals of Dowland and Purcell. He has Directed Chapel and School Choirs for over 5 years and has won various competitions in Devon and Somerset. He is currently Teaching Music and Conducting in six schools across Bristol and Somerset. Jim Blomfield Jazz piano

Jim obtained a BA Honours degree at Dartington College of Arts specialising in jazz performance and composition. A much in demand player both in the jazz and genres, Jim has performed at numerous venues and festivals throughout the UK and appeared on many Danrecordings. Robson Jim has accompanied a firmament of national and international names - Andy Sheppard, Pete King, Alan Barnes, Simon DirectorSpillett, Ed Jones of Music,and US saxophonists Bass-Baritone Benn Clatworthy and Greg Abate to name but a few. Also a composer and arranger, Jim has written for a variety of ensembles - from quartet and septet to contemporary big band and jazz/classical collaborations with the Bristol Ensemble.

Jim also leads and composes for the ‘Jim Blomfield Trio’, a vehicle for Jim’s eclectic and varied writing within the intimate setting of the piano trio, a format he has concentrated on for the last few years. The trio’s debut release ‘Wave Forms and Sea Changes‘ was critically acclaimed and the band’s live appearances have been very well received in venues across the UK. An experienced teacher, Jim also teachers at Bristol University as well as regularly teaching workshop groups and tutoring on jazz courses.

Rozanne Carpenter Piano

Rozanne was born and brought up in Rhodesia (now known as Zimbabwe), Southern Africa, where she had piano lessons privately from the age of six. After completing her A-Levels, she headed down to the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town, where she studied for a Bachelor of Music, specialising in Music Education. who introduced her to the magic of Chopin. After graduating, she returned briefly to teach Piano at the Zimbabwe Academy of Music before starting a new life in London. Rozanne cycled around West London teaching Piano privately, giving music lessons at various Montessori Nursery Schools. She then moved to Bristol and taught at Silverhill School before moving to her current position at Clifton College in 1996, teaching both Class Music and Piano. Rozanne also teaches the Piano at Clifton High School, where she has been in post since 1997. Ethel-Jane Cormack Singing

Ethel-Jane graduated from Dartington College of Arts with a joint Honours Degree in Music and Arts Management, where she studied voice with the late Mollie Petrie and operatic baritone Ian Comboy. She has many years experience of performing principal roles in fully Image Danstaged Robson and touring Opera productions, as well as Oratorio in venues throughout the UK. Before having the first of her family in 2009, she Directoralso directed ofOpera Music, and Musical Bass-Baritone productions, taking shows on tour to a variety of venues from theatres and festivals, to open-air parties. Coming Ethel-Jane specialises in teaching both Classical and Musical Theatre, from beginners to Diploma levels. She uses her extensive performance and directing experience to encourage her students to reach their full potential as confident performers themselves. As well as teaching and performing, Ethel-Jane has also sat on a number of committees from the ISM (Incorporated Society of Soon Musicians), to the Bristol Festival of Music, Speech and Drama. She is a firm believer in giving her students as many opportunities to perform outside the school environment as possible. In addition to teaching at Clifton College, Ethel-Jane also teaches at Clifton High School. Before having her family, she also taught at QEH, , Colston’s School and Bath Royal High.

Andy Davis Drums and Percussion

Andy studied Popular Music and Sound Recording at the University College of Salford where he won The BBC Kenny Clare Drum Prize with the College Big Band. He’s recorded several albums and toured with various bands. He plays for many regional musical productions Image and continues to play on recording sessions. Until recently, he was Director of Music at Christchurch, Clevedon where he was instrumental in the integration and development of its traditional and contemporary worship music. many pieces for percussion ensembles he has led. Coming Andy has taught extensively in Bristol and North Somerset and is now resident at Clifton where he has been since 1994. He is a firm Soon believer of equipping students with the musical and technical skills they need for the varied playing opportunities they may face, through fun and engaging lessons. Previous students have gone on to enjoy a wide range of musical careers; from recording and touring musicians and drum educators through to a member of the Coldstream Guards. Jane Finch Oboe & Flute Jane studied at Goldsmith’s University and Trinity College of Music where she was awarded the woodwind prize, among others. As an Danorchestral Robson musician she has performed with many of the UK’s leading orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony and Sinfonietta, and the Northern Sinfonia. As a soloist and chamber musician she has given recitals at venues such as the DirectorWigmore Hall, of Purcell Music, Rooms, Bass-Baritone St John’s Smith Square and St Martin-in-the Fields, and has broadcast for BBC Radio 3 and NBC. Her ensemble – Syrinx - which she co-founded with renowned bassoonist Martin Gatt has recorded a number of CDs including a critically acclaimed collection of chamber works by British composer Madeleine Dring that regularly features in BBC programme schedules. Jane teaches at Clifton College, Bristol Cathedral Choir School and , and is currently engaged in publishing a series of books designed to inspire the next generation of wind players.

Stephanie Gilbert Flute

Stephanie studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Clare Southworth and Peter Lloyd. There she achieved First Class Honours Degree and a Professional Performance Diploma . She then went on to do a Masters in Orchestral Training at the Guildhall School of Ima Music and Drama. Stephanie is based in Bristol and enjoys a very varied career as a performer and teacher. She plays regularly with

professional orchestras and ensembles, including the Bristol Ensemble, Swansea City Opera and also the English National Baroque Coming Ensemble. Stephanie has also worked with the Concert Orchestra de Cymru, Manchester Camerata and Bath Philharmonia. She has played a concerto in The Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte, Montipulciano and more recently has been touring the south west with a wind Soon quintet giving performances of Roald Dahl's 'Revolting Rhymes'. Stephanie teaches the flute at Millfield School and Clifton College. Natalia Gittings Violin

DanNatalia Robson studied at the , where she gained her ARCM and Dip RCM qualifications. Previously, she was Head of Image Strings at the Woodside Park School in London. Natalia has played professionally in both London and Bristol, playing as a soloist with DirectorBristol Chamber of Music,Orchestra, TauntonBass-Baritone Sinfonietta and was a member of the Voller String Quartet. Coming Natalia is fully trained with the British Suzuki Institute and in addition to her role as music teacher at Clifton College, Natalia also teaches at Bristol Grammar and Redmaids High school. Many of her pupils have won scholarships from Junior to the Upper Pre or Senior schools Soon and several have gone on to perform in National orchestras, including the National Children's orchestra of GB.

Katya Gorrie Singing

Katya has been a Private Vocal Coach for 15 years. Her private students range from 12 to 65 years old and are interested in everything from Classical, Gospel & Jazz, to Pop, Folk and Country. Katya has expertise in helping students to prepare for X factor & BGT auditions, and has led vocal workshops in schools and communities, working with people who have an interest in singing and want to learn more about different styles of music and harmony in a group. She also runs a gospel workshop every summer in Oxford with Lillian Boutte.

Dan Robson Director of Music, Bass-BaritoneKatya has toured in Canada, the US and Europe in a number of different bands. She grew up in North America and moved to the UK 16

years ago. In that time she has toured extensively, and recorded six albums which have been featured on various BBC Radio programs across the country. Katya was the founder and composer for an All Girl Rock band and is currently touring with her Gypsy Swing band. She received Classical voice training at the Royal Conservatoire of Music in Victoria, Canada and studied for the Commercial Jazz Diploma Program at Capilano University.

As well as being a professional singer, Katya is also an experienced stage actor and dancer, with several years of training in modern dance, ballet, and stage acting. She is also the Music Leader and Facilitator for the North & South Bristol Wellbeing choirs Steven Kings Piano

Steve Kings studied music at St John’s College, Cambridge and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He has performed Danaround Robson the country as a soloist, accompanist and chamber musician, and appears regularly at such venues as Bristol Cathedral, St George’s, and the Colston Hall. He is in constant demand as an accompanist to choirs, vocal soloists, and instrumentalists, and has Directorworked regularly of Music, as an official Bass-Baritone accompanist at Bristol University and the Bristol Music Festival. As a composer he has written several works for piano, of which Fractions & Muscles is the latest project. Steve is an experienced and successful teacher of piano to students of all ages (from young children to retired adults) and all abilities (from absolute beginner to diploma level). He also offers lessons in music theory and composition. He has been teaching at Clifton College since 1996, and enjoys the buzz of the Music Department here. Steve encourages students to learn classical repertoire and techniques, but also to explore other musical styles such as jazz. He aims for an integrated approach to learning, where the technical, theoretical, aural and expressive aspects of playing can interact with each other in creative and fruitful ways.

Sophia McKett Piano

Sophia is of mixed parentage and, being half Russian, quarter Sri Lankan, quarter English, has had exposure to the music and cultures of both East and West. She began music studies at the age of 6 and gave her first piano recital at the age of 11 at the Russian Cultural Centre in Colombo. Further studies continued at the Gnessin Academy of Music, Moscow, where she was trained by professors Margarita Volkova, Leonid Block and Victor Vlasov. In 1998 she gained a Master’s in Music and went on to perform in numerous concerts

both in Russia and in Sri Lanka, where she appeared as soloist with the Sri Lanka Symphony Orchestra playing Mozart’s concerto No.23 in A major. In 1999 Sophia completed the master classes of renowned pianist Vitaly Margulis in Freiburg, Germany. Sophia has been living in Bristol since 1999 and has given many recitals and masterclasses locally. She has regularly accompanied mezzo- Caroline MacPhie (Countess of Munster Trust scholarship winner) and has an ongoing piano duo partnership with pianist Giuseppe Bavetta. More recently Sophia has worked as an accompanist at the Aberystwyth Music Festival and is also a founding member of the Sonacri Piano Trio with violinist Naomi Rump and cellist Chris Greenhalgh, with whom she has performed widely. Sophia currently teaches at , Clifton College and Badminton School where she occasionally accompanies students for exams. Sophia also has a successful private teaching studio with many prize-winning pupils. Dave Miles Saxophone

Having played numerous musical instruments at school, my love of the Saxophone and its unique sound convinced me I wanted my life to be in Music, and so I enlisted in HM Forces as a Army Musician. I was lucky enough to spend 11 years traveling around the World Image Danplaying Robson at Concert Halls, Sporting venues, Royal Palaces and even Television appearances and Recording sessions. I also went to Kneeler DirectorHall, the Army of School Music, of Music. Bass-Baritone On Leaving the Army I went into teaching, and started here at Clifton College in September 1992. I have Coming conducted Swing Bands in both the Pre and the Upper school as well as numerous Saxophone groups. I started the Upper School Soul Band in 2007 and this has gone from strength to strength with other members of staff co- directing. The Soul Bands ( there are now two ) give the pupils a wonderful opportunity to experience playing in a functioning band similar to lots of bands they will find out of school Soon later in life and have fun while performing in it. Away from school, I played in a local Soul Band that performed all over the Country and was lucky enough to play at Four WOMAD Festivals which included Headlining the 2003 WOMAD in LAS PALMAS Grande Canarias to 25,000 people - an experience I will never forget! Music and the Saxophone has been a way of life for me and I hope anyone who learns an instrument will get the same enjoyment from it that I've been lucky enough to have.

Emily Mullins

Piano & Harp

Emily’s musical education began at school where she gained distinctions in grade 8 harp, oboe and piano. She gained BMus (Hons) from the whilst continuing her harp studies with Robert Johnston (principal harpist City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra).

Emily has performed concertos with regional orchestras and given recitals as part of Celeste flute and harp duo. She has played for the CBSO, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Orchestra of the Swan and many regional orchestras. Emily plays at numerous weddings and functions each year at venues from Highgrove’s Orchard Room to Wookey Hole Caves.

Emily enjoys teaching both the harp and piano at Clifton College, , Royal High School Bath, King’s School Bruton and and is much in demand as a freelance player in the southwest. Martin Pring Violin & Viola

Martin Pring is a violinist, conductor and composer/arranger. After completing his M.Mus in 1980 he was appointed Principal Conductor of the Varese Ensemble. In 1985 he made his debut with DanSadler's Robson Wells Royal Ballet conducting Petrushka, and was appointed conductor of London City Ballet. In 1986 he became Music Director Directorof Dance Advance of Music,, for which Bass-Baritone he composed and toured widely throughout Europe and China. From 1995-2004 Martin conducted the National Chamber Orchestra of Wales, including Igor Oistrakh’s 70th birthday tour. Martin conducted the London Schools Symphony Orchestra featuring Maestros in the Making for Artsworld in September 2001 and conducted the world premiere of Sir John Taverner's Mystagogia. He now spends most of his time composing. Since 1999 Martin has worked extensively in Switzerland where he conducted Boulez’s Sur Incises and has had several works premiered there, including a song cycle - Le Col and, in 2004, a major music drama - Au Coeur des Tenebres, re-staged, in an expanded version in 2010. His orchestral score for Buster Keaton’s Steamboat Bill is to be premiered in August ’18 with a new score for The General the following year. He is also composing a score which he will conduct in the Bristol Slapstick Festival in 2019.
