The earthquake occurred in the Western Rift of the East African rift system. The East African rift system is a diffuse, Jeddah S a h a r a Mecca approximately 3000-km-long, zone of crustal extension that passes through eastern from and on the 20° 20° north to on the south and that constitutes the boundary 2° 2° between the Africa plate on the west and the plate on RWANDA A R A B I A the east. At the earthquake's latitude, the Africa and Somalia Predicted Shaking P L A T E plates are spreading apart at a rate of about four millimeters per year. The earthquake occurred near Lake Kivu, the basin of 1915 Omdurman which was created by normal faulting similar to that which San'a E N C H A D E R I T R E A M produced the February 3 earthquake. The largest earthquake to 2007 Swarm E 1967 have occurred in the rift system since 1900 had a magnitude of Y Bujumbura S U D A N 1959 about 7.6. The epicenter of the February 3, 2008, earthquake is Aden within several tens of kilometers of the epicenter of a Ndjamena magnitude 6.2 earthquake that killed two people in Goma in S a h e l Djibouti e October 2002.
