A Message from our Pastor

Dear Parishioners,

Once again we were gifted with a blast of winter weather this past week. This weather brought to mind an essay I read several years ago by Barry Lopez, who lived among the Inuit people of the far north and was fascinated by the connection he saw between the artistic dimension of the Arctic landscape, as well as its physiological and psychological manifestations. In describing Winter, he writes;

It is the season that brings with it darkness and madness and oppression. It is pictured in Inuit art as a nightmare that threatens, in a supernatural sense. And, oddest of all, it is a season that is still linked to its beauty.

Is this not our experience of Winter as well – dangerous, yet beautiful. One need only drive down the highway during a winter storm and behold resplendent pine trees blanketed with glistening snow, and at the same time see cars in ditches with passengers trying desperately to stay warm and survive. Such is life for us embodied beings; our senses get seduced by the aesthetic delight of beautiful things or people. That is beauty’s power. But if left unbridled, this power can overwhelm us, become addictive, and lead us down paths of destruction. Hence the necessity of balance and moderation. This emphasis on moderation permeates The Rule of St. Benedict for his monks, for among his many attributes, Benedict had a keen awareness of human .

On a completely unrelated topic, I want to alert our parishioners to a liturgical innovation that we will introduce on the First Sunday of Lent, March 10. Instead of taking up the offertory collection with the long handled baskets that have been in use here since I can remember, the ushers will initiate the collection process by handing round baskets to the people on the ends of pews. These in turn, will pass the basket to the next person, who will hand it to the next person, and so on. The ushers will be at the ends of each pew to make sure the movement is smooth and orderly.

This method of collecting the offertory contributions in churches is by no means new. In fact, I suspect it is the oldest method, as well as the most common. It seems to me, however, that there is something more gracious and personal about handing a basket from one person to another rather than suddenly and abruptly being confronted by a long handled object during a time in the liturgy when we are singing or meditating. This is by no means a criticism of our ushers, who have been faithful and outstanding servants of the liturgy. They were simply following what was the standard way we took up our collections here at St. . These men and women ushers are not only the guardians of this essential income for our parish community, but are also ministers of hospitality, making sure that people are safe and comfortable so that the rite itself flows in an orderly fashion. I thank them in advance for their willingness to adapt to this new practice, which I believe will be a more efficient method of collecting our weekly contributions.

February 17, 2019 Page 2 Since the earliest days of our faith, one of the ways for the faithful to express their participation in the liturgy was by offering gifts for the needs of the Church and the poor. This continues today as people place their weekly donations in envelopes, or in loose cash or by means of automatic deductions from their bank accounts. This latter option assures a steadier flow of income for the parish, but bypasses the ritual action of giving. For this reason, parishioners are always welcome to place an empty envelope in the collection basket as a symbolic token of their gift.

I also use this opportunity to thank all our parishioners for their generous support of our parish and school. St. Joan of Arc has been, and continues to be, a faith community that takes to heart the words of Jesus, that it is truly more blessed to give than to receive. (Acts 20:35).

Blessings,

CLOUD OF WITNESSES The Renew the Church

Blessed was born in 1287 in northern Italy to rich and powerful nobles. However, her much-anticipated birth was met with her parents’ disgust and rejection. Margaret was born with numerous deformities. She was blind, abnormally small, hunchbacked, and walked with a limp because one of her limbs was longer than the other. Her parents were so horrified at their daughter that they hid her identity from visitors.

It was here in the solitude of the mountains that she formed a profound and intimate relationship with God. It was this relationship that sustained her through much suffering and rejection.

She would never see them again. She would be taken in by beggars and then by various families. However, her holiness and deep love of God inspired and changed the hearts of those she encountered. As a result, she was encouraged to become a lay Dominican and serve the sick and the imprisoned. This she did with much dedication and selflessness.

Margaret restored hope and dignity to so many outcasts in her society. She would die at the age of thirty-three, united to her beloved spouse, Jesus. Her body remains incorrupt to this very day.

“Margaret regards her handicaps and deformities as being merely the means whereby she can more surely reach her God.”

Our Elementary School Classes Celebrate 100 Day!

First Grade celebrated the 100th Day of school on Thursday, February 7th. Students worked at home with their parents to make a special 100 day shirt to wear to school. The students completed several different 100 day activities in school- they stacked 100 cups, were challenged to make as many words as possible out of 100 different letter tiles, had fun building with 100 bristle circles, counted and grouped objects to 100 in different ways by ones, twos, and tens, and even used the number 100 to write and draw a picture.

One Hundred Day is a milestone for our elementary students, and an opportunity to practice counting to 100 in various ways, and it’s a holistic approach to learning a combination of science, technology, religion, engineering and math (STREAM) with a special social opportunity to share collections. The students had an amazing time celebrating our 100th day of school!
