JOAN OF ARC CHURCH Dear Sisters and Brothers, Bread has been the staple food in every culture. Of course bread is called by different names, made of different grains, and baked in different shapes. But bread by any other name and baked in any other shape can be called “the staff of life.” Little wonder that Jesus was called the Bread of Life. He is the source of human nourishment, happiness, and community. In our first reading from 1 Kings 19:4-8, Elijah faced a difficult journey to Mt. Horeb. After a day’s journey in the desert, he prayed for death. But God sent him a nice spread of food and wine. Again, he lay down as if to die, but an angel touched him and told him to eat this food because the journey will be long. Fed and rested by the Lord, Elijah made the trip to Mt. Horeb. We hear in our Gospel reading from John 6:41-51, that Jesus upset his enemies when he proclaimed that he was the Bread that came down from heaven. They were even more upset when he compared himself to the manna that their ancestors ate in the desert and yet died. He was the Living Bread that people could eat and never die. If we spent half the time and money developing our minds as we do with grooming our bodies, we would revolutionize the world. There’s nothing wrong with looking good and feeling well. But these goals are not the most important things in life. We need to develop that inner beauty and strength that comes through the life of faith. Blessings, Fr.
