PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 16, 2021 The Pastor’s Corner FROM FR. CONNEALY Happy Pentecost Sunday! Today the Church celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit given to the apostles at Pentecost. In the Office of Readings for today we hear from St. Irenaeus who says, “This was why the Lord had promised to send the Advocate: he was to prepare us as an offering to God. Like dry flour, which cannot become one lump of dough, one loaf of bread, without moisture, we who are many could not become one in Christ Jesus without the water that comes down from heaven. And like parched ground, which yields no harvest unless it receives moisture, we who were once like a waterless tree could never have lived and borne fruit without this abundant rainfall from above.” St. Irenaeus, writing in the 2nd century, conveys to us the need we have for the Holy Spirit. As Catholics, we receive this gift in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Without the Holy spirit we remain dry flour, but with the Holy Spirit, we become what God intended for each of us. I would invite everyone to pray with the day of their Confirmation this week. Maybe you didn’t quite understand what was happening, maybe you had a good idea of what was happening; in any case the day of our Confirmation is still able to bear fruit for us. The graces of that day do not fade over time, but grow to the extent that we let them. If you have never been confirmed, I invite you to reach out to Brian Hanson here at the parish and begin the process. Each of us is made to live in the grace of the Holy Spirit, so that we can bear fruit in this life that will endure for eternal life. I would like to extend congratulations to all of our newly confirmed adults and children. As well, please keep Harold Escarcega in your prayers. Harold grew up here at St. Joan of Arc and will be ordained a transitional deacon next Sunday, May 30, at St. Thomas the Apostle. He will then have one more year of seminary formation before being ordained a priest next June. We are very proud of Harold and thankful for the gift of his vocation. Have a great week everyone and know of my prayers! In Christ, Fr. Connealy 1. EVANGELISTS WELCOME VISITORS We are happy to have you join us today and every Sunday. You enrich our Masses by your presence and your participation. We hope that you find our liturgies here to be an inspiring celebration of our faith. Please come back again…and often.
