Roberts A Personal God We hear more Chrisans today speak of God as a “personal” God: but what does that mean? To say God is personal does not mean that each individual person creates their own version of God, based on their own opinions and beliefs. To do that would be to make God in our own image. In fact, the opposite is true: we, as human persons, are made in God’s image. The God we profess as Catholic is a great mystery, for our God is a Trinity of Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is the greatest mystery to us how the three Persons can be one God, or how one God can be three disnct Persons. But the Trinity is not beyond our understanding when we recognize God as a unity of three Persons, joined to one another in the bond of love. Mass Intentions May 31-June 6 We are blessed that God is a Trinity of Persons, who love one another. God is not some impersonal, universal “force,” but a God who loves Monday, May 31 each one of us as His own children. What is this divine love like? When we recognize that we each are a unique gi from God to one another, we find true happiness in giving ourselves for the good of everyone else. Such gi of self is love, and it is what makes us most like Jesus Christ, who gave His life for our salvaon. Personalism teaches us that true human fulfillment and happiness are not to be found in mere earthly comforts, and that happiness is not an end or a goal in itself. True human fulfillment and happiness lie in serving God and others in love, and our final happiness is found beyond this world in the Kingdom of our Heavenly Father.     Saints in the Cuban Heat Oliva M. Espin When I was a girl of eight or nine, during another hot and humid Christmas season in Havana, los Tres Reyes Magos—the Three Kings or Wise Men who bring presents to children on January 6, the feast of the Epiphany, in many Catholic countries—brought me a small book: Ninos Santos. I was already an avid reader; Ninos Santos became my constant companion. I read its stories so often I could recite the lives of the young people it contained from mem ory. Around the same time, a film on the life of Rose of Lima, the first canon ized saint of the Americas, became a success in Latin America. Rosa de America, a black-and-white feature film, triggered my fantasies about saint- hood. Watching Rosa on the screen after reading about her in Ninos Santos made saints even more real to me.1 I was mesmerized by Argentinean actress Delia Garces playing the role of Rose of Lima. Garces was a beautiful woman, as Rosa was supposed to have been. She played many other glamorous roles in Argentinean cinema but none made her as famous to the Latin American public in the 1940s as Rosa. Her beauty made sainthood seem like an attractive possibility. Her long dark curly hair, so much like mine, made me think I could be like her if I tried. Maybe if I behaved like her I could become as beautiful and as good as she was. And Rosa was Latin American, not European like the other saints 1 was hearing or reading about.

    Father Matthew Gerin Born Lyons 1851, died Littlehampton 1918 Founder of the Catholic Mission Farnham 1889 Rector of St Polycarp’s Church 1890 – 1907 – the first post Reformation Catholic Church in Farnham. Founder of St Polycarp’s School 1891. Requiescat in Pace. Dispossessed of his parish in the diocese of Lyons by an anti- clerical French Government, Father Matthew Gerin arrived penniless in England. It was the late 1880’s. Taken in by the Woodroffe family at their house Frensham Place (now Edgeborough School) he celebrated Mass for the family in their little chapel. Soon the family opened the chapel for Mass to the faithful of the neighbourhood, calling it the Chapel of the Holy Name. With the steady increase of Sunday visitors, Father Gerin decided to found a mission in Farnham. With Bishop Butt’s encouragement and his offer of help with diocesan funds, he purchased the old police station in Bear Lane in the centre of Farnham. On 26th January 1890, the feast of St Polycarp, the new church was opened in the upstairs room and named after that great martyr- saint. The following year St Polycarp’s school was opened in one small room downstairs. In February 1905 Father Gerin met with an accident that put an end to his active life. One morning he was coming home from the workhouse (which later became Farnham Hospital) having said Mass for the Catholic inmates, when a car in the Borough skidded, mounted the pavement and threw him through a plate glass window. He sustained grave injuries to his legs.
