WHAT’S COOL ABOUT BEING CATHOLIC

The who was a of St. was St. . St. Polycarp refused to denounce Christ. He was ordered to be burnt at the stake. St. Polycarp praised God amid the flames, which miraculously failed to touch him, so he was instead killed by a spear.

Next week: This person was an American heiress who gave up a fortune in order to serve Native Americans and blacks.

St. Robert Bellarmine Mini-Mission “The Giving and Receiving of Mercy” February 28th through March 1st

The Year of Mercy is upon us. But what is mercy? This Mini-mission will help us to see how the Church understands mercy and a Merciful God. It will enable us to determine how we might develop a deeper desire for the “Work of Mercy” as well as the decision to continuously be “For Giving.” Our Mini-mission will begin with the Weekend Masses on February 27th & 28th. Then, Sunday through Tuesday evenings we will gather in the church at 6:30p.m. There will be a different talk each evening, followed by a time for refreshments and questions. You can go to all of them (which is best) but you will also get something important out of each one. These talks are directed more towards adults and adolescents. Topics for each night are as follows:

Sunday: The Need for Mercy Monday: The Gift of Mercy Tuesday: Forgiveness – The Gift of Another Chance

Catholic Relief Services Collection March 5-6, 2016 Dear Friends in Christ, Next weekend is our Catholic Relief Services Collection which funds eight Catholic agencies serving Jesus in the disguise of our suffering brothers and sisters around the world. These agencies provide a broad range of services including humanitar ian aid in the wake of natural disasters, resettling displaced individuals, and working for increased peace in our world. In war-torn Afghanistan, Aazar and Ali lost their family. The boys, ten and eight years old, fled to Pakistan looking for safety amid the many threats to their lives. Shortly after they arrived in Quetta, Pakistan, they were separated and despite days of searching, Aazar could not find his younger brother. Aazar was forced to keep moving, making his way through Pakistan and Ir aq, and finally reaching an orphanage in Turkey, where he was granted refugee status. From there, his case was assigned to the refugee resettlement program of the Catholic Church in the United States. Once here, Aazar received help looking for his little brother. Ali was found alive in Pakistan. For seven years he had lived with a Pakistani family, but as a domestic helper and so did not attend school, nor did he have any friends. Our Church’s Mi gration and Refugee Services program (MRS) began working with other agencies to reunite the brothers. Thanks to the efforts of MRS, Aazar and Ali are together today. MRS is one of the eight worldwide Catholic relief agencies funded by The Catholic Relief Services Collection. In our Diocese, this includes the Care of the Holy Land and Peter’s Pence. Through these groups, Catholics in the U.S. provide food, water, disaster relief, and other vital assistance to Jesus in the disguise of suffering people each day. Please be generous in The Catholic Relief Services Collection.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend John R. Gaydos, of Jefferson City

THE WAY OF THE CROSS: A CONCERT PRAYER OF THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS: On Sunday, March 6th at 3:00p.m. at St. Patrick Church in Rolla, The St. Francis Borgia Choir from Washington, MO will offer THE WAY OF THE CROSS: A Concert Prayer o f the Stations of the Cross. The 45-voice choir is directed by Paige Byrne Shortal and Katie Alexander and accompanied by pianist Lucy Tobben. Featured instrumentalists for this concert are oboist Jocelyn Garner, and violinist Gina Gruhn Leeker, as well as se veral choir instrumentalists: Sanford on recorder, Brianna Stephenson on clarinet, and Terry La nwermeyer on trumpet. The concert will be signed for the deaf by three signers: Torri Ryder, Karen Peters, and Corinne Glaus. Their work is a lovely addition to the c oncert and both deaf and hearing members of the congregation enjoy their graceful work. After twenty years of offering this as a concert, the choir decided to record it. The result is a CD of 16 songs, including Lenten Favorites: Behold the Wood, Jesus Remember Me, Were Y ou There, Abide with Me, Only in God, Pieta, Ave Verum, and more. Folks who have bought the CD describe it as “good car prayer” or a “a good way to center down and get into Lent.” The package also includes a 20-page illustrated devotional booklet. Purchase price is $12.95 and will be available after the concert. The concert lasts about 75 minutes. Admission is free. For more information about the concert contact St. Patrick Parish at 573-364-1435.
