Twenty Fourth Week in Ordinary Time September 15, 2019 Twenty Fourth Week In Ordinary Time September 15, 2019 Our Lady of Sorrows From the Gusset The Catholic Church looks at St. Thomas Aquinas as Her greatest Theologian. When you see greatness M if you look behind the great there often times is another, who hides in the shadow. In the case of St. Thomas M the other is: St. Albert the Great M his teacher. The martyred good King Wenceslaus (easily the greatest Bohemian Saint) had his grandmother, St. Ludmila, teach him, his Catholic Faith. Grandparents are often that person who lurks in the shadow of those who are great. And that is why we celebrate the Holy Mass in honor of our Grandparents on the Sunday closest to the Feast of St. Ludmila M patron Saint (along with Saints Joachim and Anne) of Grandparents. History will never give St. Albert the Great or St. Ludmila or Saints Joachim and Anne the credit they deserve for their influence on their protégées or grandchildren, but we can. St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Wenceslaus would be first in line to honor their mentor, their grandparents. Let’s you and I be right behind them in thanking God for the gift of our Grandparents. Let us offer the Thanksgiving of the Eucharist to those who help usNnot only to learn our Catholic Faith, but also to live our Catholic Faith! This is also Catechetical Sunday and the first day of our CCD classes. I would like to ask for your prayers for the following generous individuals, who have volunteered to teach our students. Our teachers are: Deb Cardot, Amy Krueger, Jason Malach, Teresa Machen, and Will Klein. Our substitute teachers this year will be: Aubrey Burke, Colleen Klein, Julie Malach, and the Daughters of Divine Love. Of course you all know that LouAnn Malach is our DRE. Our CCD program would look totally different, if these individuals and especially if LouAnn had not volunteered. We were very close to implementing a program by the Sophia Institute, which looks totally different from our traditional multiple classroom/teacher approach. May the scriptural blessing of teachers be given to our Catechists: those who are (teachers) shall shine brightly like the splendor of the firmament; and those who lead the many (in the Faith) shall be like the stars M forever! Once ordained he severed as a spiritual director, preached each Sunday, and started studying Hebrew while contining to study Theology. One of his spiritual directees was the great St. Aloysius Gonzaga, whose cause for canonization was put forward by Fr. Bellarmine. Fr. Robert’s claim to fame was his immense work called DisputationsNbased on scripture, tradition, and reason, the work encompassed all Catholic dogma. It has often been said about Fr. Robert’s Disputations that the work was so vast no single scholar could have produced it (yet St. Bellarmine is its sole author). What Bellarmine did with DisputationsNSt. Aquinas did with the SummaM that is why I like to call St. Robert Bellarmine the Jesuit equivalent of the Dominican’s St. Thomas Aquinas. Pope Clement VIII was a big fan of Cardinal Bellarmine saying, “the Church of God had not his equal in learning.” The Pope made Cardinal Robert the rector of the Roman College and Cardinal Inquisitor. In his latter role, Bellarmine advised Galileo, who initially took the Cardinal’s advice, but later, (12 years after Bellarmine’s death) Galileo did his own thing and wound up on the Pope’s bad side. Cardinal Bellarmine was instrumental in teaching the Faith at a time when many Catholic’s were scratching their heads at the rudeness of Protestant disputes. For instance the Protestants were arguing that in the Confiteor prayer that we ought not to pray to ‘all the Angels and Saints,’ because they could not hear us!? Bellarmine argued that just as the Saints hear our prayers, so they also hear our confessions of guilt. For didn’t the Prodigal Son say in our Lord’s parable, “I have sinned against Heaven and against earth.” In 1597, St. Bellarmine wrote a Catechism that was translated into 50 languages and was a bestseller in the 17th to the 19th century! Canonized in 1930, St. The Altar in the Basilica of St. Ignatius where St. Robert Bellarmine is also a Doctor of the Robert Bellarmine is interred. Fr. Randy celebrated Church.   • Saint Thomas More
    THOMAS MORE 1475-1535 Thomas More is one of the most universally admired personages of the English Renaissance. He is probably best known as the author of Utopia (1516) a witty description of a land where contemporary material values are reversed. More was a legal scholar, diplomat, government official and humanist author. In the circle of saints depicted in the chapel, he is the rare image of the Christian parent. More's rise to fame and wealth was steady. His father was a member of the legal profession, and he arranged for Thomas to be appointed page in the household of Cardinal John Morton, Archbishop of Canterbury. Morton had been instrumental in the deposition of Richard III and the elevation of Henry VII, who subsequently rewarded him by appointing him Chancellor. Thus Thomas was early initiated into royal politics as well as exposed to some of the finest legal minds of his day. He began his formal education at Canterbury College, Oxford, but soon moved to legal studies in London. At this time he demonstrated what would be characteristic of his career and his life: a deep spirituality that led him to reside for four years with the Carthusian monks in London's Charterhouse. Monastic life would not be his life's role, however, and in 1504 he married Jane Colt, who bore him four children before her death seven years later. The spiritual force of his personality seemed very muscular, because his sanctity engulfed everyone. He was morally large, even vast. His intellectual ability stretched way beyond his slight height. His holy life radiated profound spiritual knowing and loving. He inspired people because his vibrant soul overcame both his short stature, and his crippling illness. He thrived, not in spite of hardship, but because of it. He grew through disasters that destroyed taller men. He ex- celled against challenges that crushed stronger men. How did he flourish through exceptionally hard times? Fr. James Broderick’s biography: Robert Bellarmine, Saint and Scholar, reveals his inner strength growing through trials. St. Robert’s book: The Mind’s Ascent to God by the Ladder of Created Things summarizes his superlative spirituality. We learn his keen spirituality by liberally quoting this book. Highlights of His Life: 1542-1621 St. Robert was born October 4, 1542 in the small hill town of Montepulciano in Tuscany, thirty miles south of Siena. His family was noble, but poor, because wars with Florence and Siena bled them dry. They strove for independence from several city-states whose armies stormed through Montepulciano, impoverishing everyone. In spite of material poverty, Robert’s parents were pious, and generous to people less fortunate. Vin- cenzo and Cynthia raised five boys and seven girls. Robert was the third son.

    Thomas Stapleton’s First Polemic: An Impact Case Study Peering down from above the Catholic theology section of Bishop Cosin’s library in Durham are three early modern theologians. The presence of two of the ‘papist’ figures, painted in 1668-69, is entirely conventional: the Jesuits Francesco Suárez (1548-1617) and Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621) played an important part in shaping the intellectual culture of the Counter-Reformation. The presence of the third, Thomas Stapleton (1535-1598), is more of a puzzle. Quite plausibly the inclusion of the English Catholic exile (and one-time fellow of New College) reflected patriotic sentiment – the belief that even one’s fiercest adversary was on some basic level part of (or at least, educated by) the home team must have had some sort of appeal. At least, Anthony Wood (1632-1695) in his history of famous Oxford men felt compelled to call Stapleton ‘the most learned R. Catholick of all his time.’ The English Catholic editors of Stapleton’s 1620 four-volume Opera omnia, while mindful of the proverb that ‘a popular wine needs no ivy’ [i.e., no advertisement], similarly pressed some words of praise for Stapleton out of the mouths of his Protestant Oxbridge opponents. William Whitaker’s Cambridge colleagues had indeed lamented his bad luck, having fallen upon ‘such an antagonist; ... so stern, so invincible, so superior, to whom I would be as ill-suited a match as Troilus was for Achilles.’ Stapleton’s editors cut off Whitaker’s words right before he could resolve ‘that it was altogether necessary, unless I wished to be a deserter to the most excellent cause, to leave nothing intact of this [Stapleton’s] book in which our enemies so greatly exult.’ The world of early modern religious polemic was not for the faint-hearted.
