A Note of Thanks Dear Monsignor Marine, As our transitional deacons make final preparations for their ordination to the Priesthood, I write to thank you for the critically important role you have played in Deacon Daniel Arechabala's formation and his journey to the ministerial Priesthood. Daniel had an extremely fruitful pastoral internship at Saint Bede the Venerable Parish, and he will be a better priest for the experience. The breadth of his pastoral exposure, the openness of the people to receive a priest-in-training, and your own care- ful, thoughtful mentorship — all have provided a strong forma- tional component for Daniel during the final year of his semi- nary preparation. On behalf of the entire Saint Community, who join you in rejoicing in Deacon Daniel's coming ordina- tion, I offer sincere gratitude. May God's presence continue to be the source of great blessing upon you and the people of Saint Bede the Venerable Church!

Religious Education

Dear Parishioners, For many, this coming Monday is a vaca- tion day from work: Memorial Day. For some, it is a huge shopping day because of all the Memorial Day sales. When I was a kid, we called it Decoration Ms. Carole Obrokta Day because we placed flags and planted flowers on the graves of soldiers. I had a neighbor that lined his entire yard with American flags. He said he was thankful - thankful for the men and women who paid the ultimate price for our burgers and hot dogs and the ability to have our picnics with little regard for our security and safety. This holiday weekend we celebrate something that I think is sometimes hard for many of us to comprehend: the sacrifice of soldiers' lives for the sake of our freedom. It would be a mis- take to see these brave men and women as victims. While each fallen soldier has a unique story, each is a hero who willingly laid down his or her life for our freedom. So often we meditate on Christ's sacrificial love, but fail to love Him sacrificially in return. We thank Him with words, but do little to change our lives. Yet this is what God desires of us. We call our soldiers "service men & women" yet that term should describe Christians as well. Just as sacrifice is required to secure our freedom as Americans, freedom does not exist independently of sacrifice in the life of the believer. It may seem pointless in some ways to acquire freedom only to turn around and serve. But two thoughts come to mind here. One, is that the free person who chooses to serve knows free- dom unlike any other. They have no need of taking from others because their sense of worth comes from a higher source. I've often heard from those with true servant-hearts that it is only when we give ourselves away that we truly find ourselves. The second is a truth I need to constantly remind myself of when life seems hard or unfair; this life is nothing compared to the next. Anything we "lose" here is never truly lost if our lives belong to Christ. Let us keep each other in prayer.

God Bless, Carole Obrokta Director of Religious Education (Office: 215-357-2130)

A Great Golf Tournament Adoration Society

Perpetual adoration is continuous prayer in the presence of Jesus in the tabernacle or monstrance. Successive adorers un- dertake to make a weekly holy hour of prayer once a week and these holy hours continue day and night without ceasing. Those who spend a regular weekly Holy Hour in the Eucha- ristic presence of Jesus find that this hour each week has changed their lives. They develop an intimate friendship with Our Lord. They share their lives with Him, but He too shares His Divine Life with them. Their problems do not evaporate, but they are given an added strength to cope with them and to unite their crosses with the Cross of Christ.
