Parables were certainly spoken for a specific audience but they always have a much broader School News pertinence that speaks to us today. The para- ble of the Prodigal Son is one of the best. It is a beautiful image of the father watching and wait- ing for the return of his wayward son, and then when he finally sees him, rushing out to em- brace him—it’s a profound insight into the heart of our Father in heaven. The returning son has barely begun to express his sorrow and repent- ance while his father is already restoring him to the household. Mercy has been unleashed.

But I think there is an even greater love ex- pressed in the parable of the Lost Sheep. The Shepherd does not wait for the lost one to “come to his senses” and make his way back. The divine Shepherd lays aside his glory and seeks for the one who is lost. It does not matter if the sheep has lost its way because of naivete or sin or an unjust past—the Shepherd goes forth relentlessly in a divine search-and-rescue mission. Once again, our awesome students, teachers, and parishioners have made our annual Catholic Schools Week a success!
