Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the first reading the Spirit of the Lord sends the prophet to prophesy to the Israelites. The Lord reveals to Ezekiel the difficulty he will encounter in carrying out this task. Ezekiel is being sent to a rebellious people who are hard of heart and do not listen to the word of God. But ultimately, whether they listen or not, the Lord says that they shall know that a prophet has been among them. St. Paul, in his second Letter to the Corinthians, speaks of a “thorn in his flesh” from Satan. God has allowed this in order so that Paul may be humbled and that he might not take too much pride in his call to be an apostle. When Paul begs God to release him from this thorn, the Lord instructs Paul to rely on God’s grace alone; for even in Paul’s weakness God will reveal his power. In Mark’s Jesus returns to his home town, only to be frustrated by the people’s lack of faith. Although they know that he has performed mighty deeds, they took offense at him and would not accept his message. Jesus was amazed at their lack of faith.

Ezekiel 2: 2-5 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10 Mark 6: 1-6

Looking for Leaders to run Children’s Liturgy of the Word

St. Robert’s is planning on starting a Children’s Liturgy of the Word beginning Fall 2015. At the 10:00 mass, children will be invited to come forward to attend Children’s Liturgy of the Word. This ministry serves chil- dren, by proclaiming God’s word on a level that they understand, and by reflecting on its meaning in their lives. It will most likely be held in Kernaghan Hall. We are looking for a few adults to create a team. No for- mal training is needed but there will be some basic instruction and of course you will need Virtus Training. SRB will be glad to help with those.

For more information, contact Trina Eifert 773-286-6240 or [email protected]. Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor’s Desk

Our scriptures this weekend remind us that our preconceived notions and commonsense world view often blind us to the presence of God. Jesus has been traveling around the countryside working mighty deeds of God. Last week we read the story of the curing of the woman with the hemorrhages and Jesus raising a little girl from the dead. The word of his miracles and the wisdom of his teaching have spread throughout Galilee and Judea. In today’s gospel Jesus returns to his hometown and teaches in the synagogue. The people are astonished at his wisdom. However, they refuse to see the truth of the power and presence of God because they cannot believe that the Jesus who grew up in their midst could possibly be anyone special. Even worse, they took offense at him.

In many ways we are often no different. We are all so conditioned by our own worldview and attitudes that we close our minds. When we hear the Word that challenges our attitudes or behavior our default response is denial (original sin). We shoot the messenger. We immediately point to the person’s imperfections as a way to deny the message. This is particularly true in the Church today. Many people point out the imperfections of the messengers as a way of deciding that they can make moral decisions and value choices independently of the Word of God. To do so places us in grave spiritual peril. In the 23rd chapter of Matthew’s gospel Jesus reminds the people to do everything that the Scribes and the Pharisees teach because they sit on the chair of . In the 5th chapter he tells us that not the smallest part of the law will pass away. In today’s gospel he is amazed at his people’s lack of faith and so is unable to manifest the power of God to them.

In our first reading God tells Ezekiel that the people are hard of face and obstinate of heart, a rebellious house. At least they will know that a prophet has been among them. They recognize the Word of God. The Lord gives them the choice to heed that word or resist it. We, too, have that choice. But first we have to listen and acknowledge God’s truth. Let us pray that God will not have reason to be amazed at our own lack of faith.

Thank you to all who attended the Calendar Meeting on June 18 to coordinate our schedule for the upcoming year. A lot of work goes into the planning and preparation of the many activities that take place throughout the year.

The Teen Car Wash held this past Saturday was a great service project to our parish and raised over $1,200 for their Summer Mission Trip to be held in July. Thank you to all who supported our young people.

Summer Construction season is underway. We finally got approval from the Archdiocese for the new lighting panel for the church. The estimated cost with installation is $27,000. We have only raised $18,000 so far towards these costs, leaving us in need of ad additional $9,000. Installation should take place in early August. The required fire exits for the new school labs put in last summer have been taking water seepage due to the water table beneath the school. Estimated costs to repair this problem is around $6,000. The rectory basement flooded in the recent storms. This has happened every summer for the past four years. Each time we did everything that the risk manage- ment office at the Archdiocese suggested (for minimal cost). It now appears that we will have to install a new ejec- tor pump and possibly reroute the water drainage pathways around the rectory in both parking lots. We will have several professional flood abatement companies out in the next few weeks to propose solutions and bid on the re- pairs. Initial estimates are around $14,000. Finally, there is some re-plastering and painting in the convent that will cost about $3,000. Since these are all unbudgeted expenses the parish is in need of your help. Any financial assis- tance you can give us to help cover these added costs is deeply appreciated.

Pope Francis has issued a new encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si (Praise Be) calling all of us to be better stewards of creation and to view the world in a new way, not simply as a means of consumption. While the draws upon his background as a scientist the document is not an economic or scientific document, but rather an ap- peal to a spiritual and moral view of the interdependence of all peoples and all of creation. Having just read the short Vatican synopsis, I was impressed with the Pope’s vision and look forward to reading the entire encyclical.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Baby Blankets for Baptisms

Here at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, we try to give every newly baptized child a gift of a hand made blanket as a symbol of the parish community wrapping the child in God’s love.

If you like to knit or crochet and would like to be a part of our Blanket Ministry, you are invited to make blankets for the children. Please bring them to the rectory whenever you have them completed.

We also give fleece-tied blankets. If you know how to make those or would like to learn, just contact Deacon Bill at the rectory and he will provide you with the fabric and instructions.

We also accept donations of gift bags and fleece material (1 yard lengths).

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

The RCIA is a process for those considering becoming Catholic, specifically:

• For those who are not baptized and are in the process of making a decision to become Catholic

• For those who were baptized and are in another faith, yet are thinking of becoming Catholic

• For those who were baptized Roman Catholic and have not received the Eucharist or Confirmation

The process is designed to assist those interested in Catholicism, to learn about our faith, our traditions, and our celebrations. Each person is invited to reflect on his or her own relationship with God and the faith community. We journey though this process together, assisting each other in our response to God’s call.

If you or someone you know is interested in the RCIA, please call Deacon Bill Frere at the Adult Education Office (773) 777-2666 for more information.

The Women’s Center Bulletin Announcement for July, 2015 At The Women’s Center women who are pregnant and in a difficult situation find compassion, friendship and help. Very often they are being coerced into aborting their baby; but with our support, they are able to give birth to their child. We receive beautiful “thank you” notes after their baby is born. Please mark Saturday, September 12th on your calendar for our Bike/Hike for Life. More details will be giv- en later. Have you felt God calling you to serve in the pro-life mission field? The Women’s Center is looking for new volunteers Monday-Friday at our Cicero Ave. location. We especially need two volunteers to greet clients in our lobby reception area on Wednesdays 9am-noon and Fridays 1-4pm. We would love to find a retired man, who can lift up to 40 lbs., to distribute baby furniture on Wednesdays or Thursdays from 10am-2pm. We also need ladies to assist clients in our Family Room to receive merchandise for their families on Saturdays 9am- 12noon or noon-3pm and a lady willing to assemble layettes and hygiene bags. We also have an excellent op- portunity for one up to four people at a time to clean and prepare baby bottles for our “spare change cam- paign.” Please consider hosting a baby shower for mothers and babies: we can especially use new baby clothes 0-3 month or 3-6 month, new bibs, baby hygiene products and size 6 disposable diapers. If you are interested in volunteering or hosting a baby shower for us, please contact Paige at 773-794-8807 or pscar- [email protected]. You can brighten many people’s lives. We need 2 walkers, 1 toddler bed, 4 strollers, 1 double stroller, 7 pack n plays, 4 swings, 3 bassinets, 3 bouncers and 5 infant car seat/carriers. It will be a great help if you can deliver these to us. For our address, or if a pick-up by a volunteer is needed, please call 773-794-1313. The families who receive these things are grateful for your generosity.
