A RELIGION IN ITS TIME: NUMEROLOGY AND MORAL ALCHEMY IN PHILIPPE DE MÉZIÈRES’ WORK Joël Blanchard In his cell at the Celestines’ monastery, the Vieil Pélerin [The Old Pilgrim], also known as Ardant Désir [Burning Desire], has a dream. A lady of light, Divine Providence, attended by her ladies-in-waiting, appears to him to announce to him nothing less than the necessary reform of Christianity and of the kingdom of France. The wall that men have erected through their sins between themselves and God must be brought down. The biblical parable of the talents urges that those men who have the ability, and first among them the Vieil Pélerin, make the most of these talents on behalf of the renascence of the kingdom of God and in the service of the kingdom of France. Thus will one be able to help France’s new sovereign, the “blanc faucon aux bec et aux pattes dorés” [the golden-billed and golden-legged white falcon], Charles VI, in his mission. Yet, prior to everything, an inquiry has to be carried out and an inventory made in every part of the Christian world, so the necessary remedies could be determined. Only then will the “belle monnoie de la sainte arquemie” [the beautiful coinage of holy alchemy], moral alchemy being meant here, be able to circulate in the whole world and the philosopher’s stone be discovered.1 Le songe du vieil pelerin is as much an initiatory tale as a work deal- ing with politics (and political morality), history and geography, which plunges us right into the tragic end of the Middle Ages. -

In the 5th century writings of Possidius, we learn that Saint Augustine: …ordered the Davidic Psalms, which are few in number concerning penance, to be copied for him, and lying in bed he used to look at those pages which had been placed on the opposite wall and read them, and wept profusely and con- tinuously (Vita S. Augustini, xxxi) The first unequivocal reference to the seven “penitential” psalms as a group dates back to Cassiodorus (d. 580 A.D.), in his Expositio Psalmorum. When you see greatness M if you look behind the great there often times is another, who hides in the shadow. In the case of St. Thomas M the other is: St. Albert the Great M his teacher. The martyred good King Wenceslaus (easily the greatest Bohemian Saint) had his grandmother, St. Ludmila, teach him, his Catholic Faith. Grandparents are often that person who lurks in the shadow of those who are great. And that is why we celebrate the Holy Mass in honor of our Grandparents on the Sunday closest to the Feast of St. Ludmila M patron Saint (along with Saints Joachim and Anne) of Grandparents. History will never give St. Albert the Great or St. Ludmila or Saints Joachim and Anne the credit they deserve for their influence on their protégées or grandchildren, but we can. St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Wenceslaus would be first in line to honor their mentor, their grandparents. Let’s you and I be right behind them in thanking God for the gift of our Grandparents. Let us offer the Thanksgiving of the Eucharist to those who help usNnot only to learn our Catholic Faith, but also to live our Catholic Faith! This is also Catechetical Sunday and the first day of our CCD classes. I would like to ask for your prayers for the following generous individuals, who have volunteered to teach our students. -

UNDERSTANDING WHEN TO KNEEL, SIT AND STAND AT A TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS __________________________ A Short Essay on Mass Postures __________________________ by Richard Friend I. Introduction A Catholic assisting at a Traditional Latin Mass for the first time will most likely experience bewilderment and confusion as to when to kneel, sit and stand, for the postures that people observe at Traditional Latin Masses are so different from what he is accustomed to. To understand what people should really be doing at Mass is not always determinable from what people remember or from what people are presently doing. What is needed is an understanding of the nature of the liturgy itself, and then to act accordingly. When I began assisting at Traditional Latin Masses for the first time as an adult, I remember being utterly confused with Mass postures. People followed one order of postures for Low Mass, and a different one for Sung Mass. I recall my oldest son, then a small boy, being thoroughly amused with the frequent changes in people’s postures during Sung Mass, when we would go in rather short order from standing for the entrance procession, kneeling for the preparatory prayers, standing for the Gloria, sitting when the priest sat, rising again when he rose, sitting for the epistle, gradual, alleluia, standing for the Gospel, sitting for the epistle in English, rising for the Gospel in English, sitting for the sermon, rising for the Credo, genuflecting together with the priest, sitting when the priest sat while the choir sang the Credo, kneeling when the choir reached Et incarnatus est etc. -

Carm. * The word Carmel virtually defines the religious family that calls itself the Carmelite Order. It is a geographical designation (as in also Carthusian and Cistercian), not a person's name like Francis, Dominic and the Servite Seven Holy Founders. In the Church's calendar, Carmel is one of three Marian sites celebrated liturgically, along with Lourdes and St. Mary Major. It may be asked: Who founded the Carmelites on Mount Carmel? There is no easy answer, though some names have been suggested, begin, ning with the letter B-Brocard, Berthold, ...What is known is that during the Crusades in the late eleven,hundreds some Euro, peans settled as hermits on Mount Carmel, in the land where the Savior had lived. -

Woodstock College N AN age that is being torn apgxt by a profound spiritual crisis in the I temporal order, it is inevitable that the problem of the relations between the spiritual and temporal should assume ranking importance. No one stands aside from this problem; everyone must adopt some solu tion for it. Secular theorists of the "new man" are urging the neces sary exclusion of the spiritual, in the traditional sense, from any in fluence on temporal affairs, and are enforcing on man his destiny to be the unaided creator of the conditions of his own free life. Christian theorists solve the problem in terms of their own concept of Christianity and the degree and kind of engagement of religion and the church in the affairs of this world that it permits or prescribes; the orthodox Lutheran or Barthian will differ considerably from the contemporary Protestant liberal or freechurchman. In Catholic terms, of course, the cardinal question is that of the spiritual authority of the Church over the temporal—its bases, extension, fields and manner of exercise, techniques of effectiveness, etc. This is an ancient question, with a complicated history; in the details of its answer there has never been, nor is there yet, complete uniformity of view. Writing in the sixteenth century, St. Robert Bellarmine said: "The fact that there is in the Pope a power in regard of temporal affairs is not a matter of opinion but of certainty among Catholics; although there is no lack of disputes over what kind and manner of power it is .. -

(NRSV) When Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden, God revealed to them the basic structure of the original language. At that time man lacked direct experience so he needed to be taught how to think and function in order to deal with his environment. His mind was in some ways like that of a newborn baby. The creative process of developing the human mind was not finalized in the Garden. It will continue throughout the cycles of human habitation of the earth. The finished product (a human being from God's perspective) can only come to his full potential by being born on the other side of reality after his earthly life is through. After programming, for example, a computer usually must be shut down and restarted. Similarly, people must die and then be resurrected in order to become a finished product in accordance with God's full pleasure and intent. However, because God does not want preprogrammed robots, He gave us free will. Many human beings will reject eternal life by rejecting God. Since they do not choose to conform to His image, they will remain dead and eventually be eliminated in the lake of fire. Only those made holy and clean by the blood of Jesus Christ will remain to live forever. -
