The Flyers and Coyotes are getting both of their meetings this season out of the way in the first month. Arizona took a 4-3 overtime win back on October 15.

Saturday, October 15, 2016 – Arizona 4, Flyers 3 (OT) at Gila River Arena: The Flyers erased a two-goal deficit to force overtime, but Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored during a delayed penalty with 1:48 left in OT to give Arizona the extra standings point and a 4-3 win. Shane Doan opened the scoring with a power play goal 8:49 into the first period, which Michael Raffl answered when he deflected home a point from Nick Schultz with 7:29 left in the period. Arizona then built a two-goal lead on tallies by Martin Hanzal with 5:43 left to play and a shorthanded goal from Brad Richardson 17 seconds into the second period. Wayne Simmonds pulled the Flyers within a goal six minutes later, and Matt Read tied it up 4:36 into the third. That set the stage for Ekman-Larsson’s winner, which came after the Flyers dominated much of the first three minutes of the OT period. Steve Mason stopped 31 for the Flyers, while Mike Smith turned away 27. Stars of the Game: 1 – Oliver Ekman-Larsson; 2 – Martin Hanzal; 3 – Shane Doan.

The rare scheduling quirk makes it the first time since the Coyotes relocated to Arizona that the Flyers have faced them four times in the same calendar year. This is also only the seventh time the Flyers have visited the Coyotes in the last 10 years.

LAST GAME Tuesday, October 25, 2016: Flyers 4, Buffalo 3 (SO) at Wells Fargo Center – The Flyers went down 3-0 after two periods, but charged back with three power play goals in the third period and came away with a 4-3 shootout win. After a scoreless first period, the Sabres struck with a goal from Tyler Ennis 2:06 into the second and then picked up a pair of power play goals from , one 3:56 into the period and one with 4:17 left in the frame. The third goal ended the evening for Michal Neuvirth, who was replaced by Steve Mason. Shots were even after the second period, but the Flyers outshot the Sabres 19-5 in the third and started the scoring with Travis Konecny’s first NHL goal 4:30 into the period. But the Flyers were still down 3-1 with a little more than three minutes to play when Dmitry Kulikov was called for charging Jake Voracek, who briefly left the game. Brayden Schenn capitalized on the man advantage with 2:56 left, and then with Sam Reinhart in the box for high sticking, Mark Streit scooped a puck over a dogpile in front of the Sabres net to tie the score with 1:51 remaining. After a mostly uneventful overtime, the Flyers were the only ones to score in the shootout – Claude Giroux put one home in the second round and Voracek iced it with a third-round goal, while Mason stopped the Sabres in each of the first two rounds. He takes the win with eight saves in 29:17 of play, while Neuvirth turned away 14 of 17 in 35:43. Nilsson absorbed the loss in his first start of the season, stopping 38 of 41.
