BUFFALO HISTORICAL NOTABLES

The Flyers and Sabres have only made four trades in the 45 years that the Sabres have been in existence. The most recent was Feb. 27, 2007 when the Flyers acquired Martin Biron for a 2007 2nd round draft pick that Buffalo used to select Moorestown, NJ native T.J. Brennan. One of the other trades occurred on March 5, 1990 and brought the Flyers Kevin Maguire and a second round draft pick in that year’s draft, which the Flyers used to select Mikael Renberg. Jay Wells and a fourth-rounder went to Buffalo in that .

One of the other ones (in 1971) involved two guys named Larry – Keenan to the Flyers, Mickey to the Sabres.

The Flyers and Sabres have played in nine playoff series, with the Flyers holding a 6-3 record. The Rangers are the only team the Flyers have faced on more occasions in the playoffs, having faced them 11 times.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

Jake Voracek and Claude Giroux will represent the Flyers at the NHL All-Star Game in Columbus, Ohio the weekend of January 24- 25. Both players have been at the top of the league’s scoring charts all season. Voracek continues to lead the league in scoring headed into tonight’s games with 17 goals and 35 assists for 52 points, despite the Flyers being shut out in their last two contests. Voracek needs just 10 points to reach his career high of 62 posted last season. His actual most productive season was the shortened 2012-13 campaign, when he posted 46 points in 48 games for a .958 points-per-game average, or 79 points over a full season. Voracek had two goals and two assists for four points in the three games before these two shutouts.

Giroux is tied for third in the NHL in scoring with 14 goals and 34 assists for 48 points. He missed a game for the first time since the last game of the 2011-2012 when he sat out at New Jersey on Jan. 3 after sustaining a lower-body injury at Carolina on Jan. 2. It snapped a streak of 168 consecutive regular-season games. Giroux has established himself as one of the top faceoff men in the league. He has taken 1091 faceoffs this season, nearly 100 more than the next closest player, and has won 609 of them. At 55.5 percent, Giroux is 4th in FO percentage among the top 30 players in the league in terms of faceoffs taken. Giroux also ranks third in the NHL in shots with 163 – he is on pace to eclipse his career high of 242 shots by more than 60 – and is second among forwards in TOI at 21:03. He had a four-game point streak come to an end with Wednesday’s shutout loss at Washingon; he’d posted five points in the stretch.

Wayne Simmonds has 16 goals on the season, one off the Flyers lead. Simmonds established a career high with 29 goals last year; his previous career high was 28 in his first year with the Flyers in 2011-12, and his 15 goals in the 2012-13 shortened season was a similar pace.

The Flyers come into tonight’s game looking to end a scoreless streak of 144:59 dating back to their seventh goal in the 7-3 win over Tampa Bay on Monday. The last time they were shut out in consecutive games was last April 1-3 and it also involved Ryan Miller, who was with St. Louis at the time – on that occasion, Miller recorded the first shutout in the set in a 1-0 SOL for the Flyers at St. Louis, which was followed by a 2-0 loss to Columbus (Bobrovsky). Miller recorded his own second consecutive shutout last night when he blanked Carolina.

Prior to that set, the Flyers’ last consecutive shutouts against were Nov. 28 & Dec. 3, 2009, and before that was Feb. 10-12, 2003, the second of two such occasions in less than a month. The other was the team’s franchise record for longest scoreless streak, which is 199:43 from Jan. 24-30, 2003. That streak included consecutive shutout losses to Boston and Tampa Bay, and came 1:58 from being a third consecutive before Eric Chouinard, who had just been acquired in a trade the night before, scored in a 5-1 loss to the Devils on Jan. 30. The Flyers have never gone three complete games without scoring a goal.

The last two games have included a total 0-for-7 run for the Flyers’ power play, which came after a five-game streak with at least one power play goal and a 3-for-4 night vs. Tampa Bay on Monday. The Flyers still rank sixth overall in the NHL in power play percentage at 22.2 and are tops at home at 28.6 percent.

The Flyers are 4-20-6 this season when scoring three or fewer goals in a game. Three of the four wins have required extra time (2 OTW, 1 SOW). The Flyers have struggled in general this year in low-scoring games, going 2-11-2 in 15 games where they and their opponent have combined for four or fewer goals. That includes a 2-5 record in games that have ended in a 2-1 score either in regulation or OT/SO, and two 1-0 losses – one in a SO and Wednesday night’s at Washington in regulation.

Last Tuesday’s shootout win over Ottawa snapped a 10-game shootout losing streak for the Flyers. They had lost five this season and the last five of last season since their last win, which came on Dec. 30, 2013 at VAN.

The Flyers are averaging 9.7 PIM per game, which is 11th-fewest in the league. The Flyers were the most penalized team in the league two of the last three years, and averaged 14.7 minutes per game last year.
