BLUE JACKETS NOTES EPIC GAME 1 BATTLE The Blue Jackets and Lightning kicked off the 2020 NHL playoffs with a game to remember, playing the fourth longest game in NHL history and second longest in modern NHL history at 150:27. Tampa Bay finally won the game 10:27 into the fifth overtime. The teams combined to set a NHL record for most shots in a game at 151 (TBL-88; CBJ-63) with 17 of the 18 Blue Jackets skaters recording at least one on goal. Joonas Korpisalo (85 saves) and Seth Jones (65:06) set single-game records for most saves and time on ice (since 1955-56 for shots and 1998-99 for TOI). Korpisalo surpassed NY Islanders’ ’s record of 73 saves (NYI 3-2 OT win vs. WSH on Apr. 18, 1987) and Jones surpassed Dallas’ Sergei Zubov’s 63:51 posted on Apr. 23, 2003 vs. Anaheim.

TIGHT AFFAIRS The Jackets played in their third one-goal game in their last four playoff contests with each decided after regulation. Besides the epic quintuplet overtime on Tuesday, the club played in single OTs in Games 3 and 4 vs. Toronto and are now 1-2 in overtime in the 2020 postseason (6-6 all-time). The one- goal finals have been a common theme for the club all season. The team led the NHL in one-goal games played and wins in 2019-20 with 43 and 20 respectively (20-8-15).

WE MEET AGAIN Columbus earned a 3-0 shutout victory over Toronto on Sunday to advance to the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Tampa Bay Lightning. It marks the second-straight year that the teams will face off in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Last year, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets upset the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Lightning 4-0. It marked the fourth time in NHL history, and first time in the first round, that a team swept the best team in the NHL in a playoff series.

QUALIFYING JACKETS The Blue Jackets were the last team to punch their ticket to the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs as they went the distance against the in the Eastern Conference qualifying round. The club earned two of their three victories via shutout, including the clinching game in a 3-0 win on Sunday. Cam Atkinson (2-3-5) led the way in scoring while Pierre-Luc Dubois added 3-1-4. It marked the first time in franchise history CBJ won a winner-take-all game (of any length series).

FOUR-STRAIGHT For the first time in franchise history, CBJ have earned a trip to the postseason to compete for the Stanley Cup in four consecutive seasons. With the results of qualifying round play, Columbus is one of just three teams to play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of the past four campaigns, joining Washington (six) and Boston (four). It marks the sixth time in club history, and fifth in the past seven seasons that the franchise will compete for the Stanley Cup.

TORTS IN CHARGE CBJ head coach John Tortorella was named a finalist for the 2019-20 Jack Adams Award after leading the club to a 33-22-15 record despite seeing his team lead the league in man games lost (419). It’s the fifth time he’s been named a finalist for the award. He has won it twice in 2004 (with Tampa Bay) and 2017 with Columbus).

PLAYOFF LIVIN’ Forwards Cam Atkinson and Boone Jenner as well as defenseman David Savard have played in all 33 postseason games played by the Blue Jackets since 2014. Atkinson owns the club records for career playoff goals, assists and points with (9-14-23 in 32 GP) while Jenner is one goal behind.

KORPI’S WORLD Joonas Korpisalo set an NHL single-game record with 85 saves in Tuesday’s Game 1 OT loss to the Lightning. The netminder has been strong in the postseason, ranking first in the NHL in shutouts (two) and second in GAA (1.34) and SV% (.960) in the League (min. two games played). He recorded the first two shutouts in franchise playoff history after stopping 28 shots in Game 1 vs. Toronto (Aug. 2) and the deciding Game 5 (Aug. 9). Korpisalo was selected to his first NHL All-Star Game and went 19-12-5 with a 2.60 GAA, .911 SV% and two shutouts in 37 games, setting single season career highs in wins, shutouts and games played.

DUBOIS LEADS THE WAY Pierre-Luc Dubois picked up points on both of the Blue Jackets goals on Tuesday with 1-1-2 for the fourth multi-point effort of his playoffs career and second of the 2020 postseason. The center, who leads the club in goals and points during the 2020 playoffs, has posted all of his points over the last four contests (4-2-6). His eight playoff goals trail only Cam Atkinson for the most all-time in franchise history. He led the club in assists and points during the regular season with 18-31-49 in 70 outings.

FROM THE BLUELINE The top pair of Seth Jones (assist on 65:06) and Zach Werenski (61:14) led the way in ice time on Tuesday with Jones setting the single game NHL record. Jones (1-2-3) leads the NHL in TOI/game during the playoffs (35:24) and ranks second in blocked shots (22) while Werenski notched the series winning goal in Game 5 vs. Toronto on Sunday. The duo have led the way from the backend all season for CBJ. Werenski set a new single-season franchise record for goals by a defenseman and became the first Blue Jacket to lead all NHL blueliners in goals (20-21-41 in 63 games). Jones, meanwhile, was selected to play in his fourth consecutive All-Star Game and ranked seventh in the NHL in time on ice (25:17), finishing with 6-24-30 in 56 games.
