Prepare to hear the term “cost certainty” in NHL circles this week. After a season cut short by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which ravaged league revenue and led to a flat salary cap of $81.5 million for 2020-21 – and possibly 2021-22 – that term is on the front burner for many teams, including the Blue Jackets.

    1. C Nolan Patrick | Brandon Wheat Kings, WHL | 6’1, 196 | 11/27/98: Bruising center with sublime puck skills who battled through an injury-plagued season. Patrick is the type of center to build a franchise around, and he’s both physically and mentally ready to handle the day-to-day rigors of playing for an organization in desperate need of help. He has an excellent shot with a quick release, and will make goalies stretch out to their maximum elasticity in order to stop it. Patrick possesses exceptional vision and can thread the needle with authority either cross-ice or static. He never backs down from a challenge and can deliver punishing checks to separate his opponent from the puck. Patrick’s skating is powerful and he has phenomenal balance and agility, and though he lacks first-step explosiveness, he can outskate most defenders while taking direct routes to the net. 2. C Casey Mittelstadt | Green Bay Gamblers, USHL | 6’0, 201 | 11/22/98: No draft-eligible player exemplifies infectious leadership the way this Minnesota- reared super scorer does, and there’s a strong chance Mittelstadt will end up within a select group of prospects to challenge Nolan Patrick for the top slot. Size, speed, grace, vision, power and enthusiasm are just a few words one throws around when dissecting his game, and it will be on display for the University of Minnesota in the fall of 2017. Mittelstadt is a money player with a deadly shot, using his size and lower body strength to step into it with NHL-level velocity.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips October 3, 2019 Pittsburgh hosts Buffalo for season opener The Associated Press October 3, 2019 Pittsburgh; Thursday, 7 p.m. EDT BOTTOM LINE: The Pittsburgh Penguins face off against the Buffalo Sabres at home for the season opener. Pittsburgh finished 26-15-11 in Eastern Conference action and 23-14-4 at home in the 2018-19 season. The Penguins scored 56 power play goals on 228 power play opportunities last season. Buffalo finished 19-25-8 in Eastern Conference play and 12-24-5 on the road in the 2018-19 season. The Sabres recorded 378 assists on 221 total goals last season. The matchup Thursday is the first meeting this season between the two teams. Penguins Injuries: Alex Galchenyuk: day to day (lower body). Sabres Injuries: None listed. Analyzing the Sabres' first roster under new coach Ralph Krueger By Lance Lysowski The Buffalo News October 3, 2019 Jason Botterill didn't perform the roster surgery that some expected. The Buffalo Sabres' General Manager retained his restricted free agents and did not trade Rasmus Ristolainen. There weren't any contract buyouts, either. Instead, Botterill supplemented his core players with four important additions: Marcus Johansson, Jimmy Vesey, Colin Miller and Henri Jokiharju. The Sabres also improved their depth in the organization by adding John Gilmour and Curtis Lazar. Rather than parting ways with players who struggled under former coach Phil Housley, Botterill is hoping new coach Ralph Krueger gets more production out of the Sabres. "I thought we’ve built each game," Miller said at the conclusion of the preseason.

Could it have been their last practice of the season? They hope not, and they need only to take care of business to assure that it wasn’t. But after Black Tuesday — an ugly 6-2 loss in their home finale to Boston and wins by Carolina and Montreal — the Blue Jackets’ playoff chances went from highly likely to precarious. Sitting at 94 points, the Jackets can clinch a postseason spot if they win either of their final two games, Friday at the New York Rangers and Saturday at the Ottawa Senators.
