This framework is very general and can be used to model a variety of problems, such as movie studios selecting movies to produce, drug companies choosing drugs to develop, or venture capital firms picking start-up companies in which to invest. We model this as a combinatorial optimization problem with a submodular objective function, which is the probability of winning. We then show that the objective function can be approximated using only pairwise marginal probabilities of the entries winning when there is a certain structure on their joint distribution. We consider a model where the entries are jointly Gaussian random variables and present a closed form approximation to the objective function. We then consider a model where the entries are given by sums of constrained resources and present a greedy integer programming formulation to construct the entries. Our formulation uses three principles to construct entries: maximize the expected score of an entry, lower bound its variance, and upper bound its correlation with previously constructed entries. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our greedy integer programming formulation, we apply it to daily fantasy sports contests that have top heavy payoff structures (i.e. -

F IFTY IS A BIG NUMBER Flying wasn’t fun, and for a number of years it fit right in with everything else around the team. We just weren’t enjoying the game. For all three of those years that I hit the 50 mark, it was almost like if our line didn’t score we had no chance of winning the game. Billy and Danny Daoust and Tom Fergus, the three centres I played with over those years—I had great chemistry with all of them. But a lot of nights it felt like we were on our own. And I hated losing more than I liked winning. That’s the way I was as a kid; I didn’t like losing at anything. To put those seasons in historical perspective, a number of Leafs had gotten close to 50 in years past: Frank Mahovlich had his 48 goals, and then Lanny McDonald had seasons with 46, 47 and 43; Darryl had 45 one year. And then Gary Leeman scored 51 during the 1989–90 season. Dave Andreychuk became the third Leaf to do it, in 1992–93, although there’s an asterisk of sorts next to that one because he scored 29 of the goals with Buffalo, and then 25 with the Leafs over 83 games. The next season, he scored 53, all of them with the Leafs. So, just the three of us. So far. Columbus Blue Jackets Announce Roster Moves
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: NOVEMBER 6, 2019 COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS ANNOUNCE ROSTER MOVES COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have activated left wing Alexandre Texier off Injured Reserve and recalled defenseman Adam Clendening and goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks from the Cleveland Monsters, Columbus’ American Hockey League affiliate, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. The team has also assigned goaltender Elvis Merzlikins to the Monsters. Texier, 20, has missed the past four games with a knee injury suffered on October 26 at Philadelphia. He has registered two goals and an assist for three points with four penalty minutes and an even plus/minus rating in 11 contests with Columbus this season. A native of St. Martin D’heres, France, Texier has tallied 3-1-4, four penalty minutes and a +3 plus/minus rating in 13 career games with the team since making his NHL debut at the end of the 2018-19 campaign. He collected 27-36-63 in 108 career Liiga games with KalPa from 2017-19, including 14-27-41 in 55 appearances in 2018-19. He was the club’s second round pick, 45th overall, at the 2017 NHL Draft. Clendening, 27, has registered 4-20-24 with 49 penalty minutes and a +11 plus/minus rating in 90 career NHL games with the Blue Jackets, Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks. He skated in four regular season games with Columbus in 2018-19 before making his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut and collecting 0-1-1 in seven postseason outings. -
