TONIGHT'S GAME The Capitals visit the Columbus Blue Jackets at on Monday in the second of four meetings between the teams this season. Columbus defeated the Capitals 5-2 on Dec. 9 at Capital One Arena. The Capitals are 24-11-1-5 all-time against the Blue Jackets and 12-7-0-2 on the road. Alex Ovechkin has recorded 27 points (18g, 9a) in 35 career games against Columbus. Since the Capitals and Blue Jackets joined the Metropolitan Division in the 2013-14 season, Ovechkin's 12 goals are tied for the second most against Columbus during that span. Braden Holtby has posted a 15-7-2 record in 26 career games against the Blue Jackets, his fifth most wins against a single franchise.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT Road Warriors – The Capitals improved to 15-2-1 on the road this season with their 5-2 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. With 15 wins in their first 18 road games, the Capitals tied the NHL record for fewest games to 15 road wins in a season, matching the 2006-07 Buffalo Sabres (15-3-0). Through games played Dec. 14, no team in the NHL has more than 14 wins at home this season. Washington has outscored opponents by an NHL-best 18 goals (66-48) on the road this season. The Capitals have won five straight games away from home, beginning Nov. 30 at Detroit, and have outscored opponents 21-9. It also marks the Capitals’ second five-game winning streak on the road this season (Oct. 25 through Nov. 16). With a win against Columbus, the Capitals would tie the franchise record for longest winning streak on the road (Feb. 20 through March 15, 2011; Feb. 26 through April 1, 1984). The Capitals' hold a record of 110-54-18 on the road over the last five seasons and lead the NHL in wins and points (238) during that span.

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Penalty Skill – The Capitals went 4 for 5 on the penalty kill against Tampa Bay’s second-ranked power play on Saturday. Since Nov. 30, the Capitals have killed 23 of 25 power play opportunities (92.0 percent), which ranks third in the NHL during that span. Over their last 10 games, the Capitals have played five games against opponents that currently rank in the top seven in power play percentage (Nov. 23 vs. Vancouver, Nov. 27 vs. Florida, Nov. 29 vs. Tampa Bay, Dec. 11 vs. Boston, Dec. 14 at Tampa Bay). In those games, the Capitals have killed a combined 19 of 22 power play opportunities (86.4 percent), 1.3 percent higher than their season average. This season, Washington ranks fifth in the NHL in penalty kill percentage (85.1). Through 34 games last season, the Capitals’s penalty kill ranked 27th in the NHL (76.0 percent).

Osh Babe – T.J. Oshie recorded two points (1g, 1a) against Tampa Bay on Saturday, his second consecutive multi-point game. Over his last two games, Oshie has scored three goals and his 14 goals this season rank third on the Capitals (Alex Ovechkin: 21; Jakub Vrana: 15). Oshie is on pace to score 33 this season, which would match his career high set in 2016-17. Oshie, who turns 33 on Dec. 23, would become just the fifth player since 2017-18 to score 30 goals in a season at the age of 32 or older (2018-19: Alex Ovechkin - 51g, 33 y.o.; Patrice Bergeron - 32g, 33 y.o.; Joe Pavelski – 38g, 34 y.o.; 2017-18: Ovechkin - 49g, 32 y.o.; Bergeron - 30g, 32 y.o.; Eric Staal - 42g, 33 y.o.). Since joining the Capitals in 2015-16, Oshie has recorded 116 goals, which ranks second on the team (Ovechkin: 204) and 35th in the NHL. Additionally, Oshie’s 17.5 shooting percentage during that span ranks second in the NHL (Mark Scheifele, Winnipeg: 18.0) among players with at least 100 goals.

Holtbeast - Braden Holtby enters tonight’s game against the Blue Jackets with 273 career wins in 444 career games and sits in 46th place on the NHL's all-time wins list. Among the goaltenders that rank in the top 50 in wins in NHL history, Holtby is the only goaltender to play in fewer than 500 career games and ranks first in win percentage (.615). Additionally, Holtby ranks ninth among active goaltenders in wins. This season, Holtby's 16 wins rank tied for first in the NHL and his three regulation losses are the fewest among goaltenders with at least 12 wins. Holtby has led his team to earn a point in 17 of his last 19 games (15-1-2) and 20 of his 24 games (16-3-4). Since the 2013-14 season, Holtby leads the NHL in wins (236).

Torrid Pace – John Carlson leads all NHL defensemen in goals (12), assists (33) and points (45) and ranks third in the NHL in assists (Connor McDavid: 37; Leon Draisaitl: 36). Carlson has recorded a point in 13 of his last 18 games (5g, 17a) and 25 of his 34 games this season, including a separate nine and eight game point streak (nine games: Oct. 8 through 24, 5g, 13a; eight games: Nov. 7 through 20, 1g, 12a). Carlson is on pace for 108 points over an 82-game season. Only five defensemen in NHL history have recorded more than 100 points in a season (Bobby Orr: six times; Paul Coffey: five times; Denis Potvin, Al MacInnis and Brian Leetch: each once) and only Orr and Coffey have recorded at least 114 points (Orr: five times; Coffey: four times). Larry Murphy holds the Caps franchise record for most points by a defenseman in a season with 81 (1986-87: 23g, 58a).

• Elite Company - On Dec. 11 against the Boston Bruins, Carlson became the first defenseman since Al MacInnis (1990-91, 14g, 33a) to record at least 45 points through a team's first 33 games.

• Carly in the Clutch - Carlson scored the game-winning goal in the third period against Boston, marking his fifth game-winning goal this season. Carlson's five game-winning goals are tied for the NHL lead (Jeff Carter, LA; Ryan Getzlaf, ANA; David Perron, STL; David Pastrnak, BOS; Leon Draisaitl, EDM). Among players with five game-winning goals, Carlson's 12 total goals are tied for the third fewest. Carlson is now two game-winning goals shy of passing Kevin Hatcher (6, 1992-93) for the Capitals' single-season franchise record by a defensemen. Additionally, Carlson's nine points in the final 10 minutes of regulation and in overtime this season are the third most on the team (T.J. Oshie: 11; Alex Ovechkin: 10; Tom Wilson, 10).

HistOvi – At 679 career goals, Alex Ovechkin is now six goals shy of passing Teemu Selanne (684) for the 11th most goals in NHL history. On pace for 50 goals this season, Ovechkin, who turned 34 on Sept. 17, is looking to become the second player in NHL history to record at least 50 goals in a season at the age of 34 or older (John Bucyk: 51 goals in 1970-71 at the age of 35). Nine players in NHL history have recorded at least 40 goals at the age of 34 or older. Additionally, with another 50 goal season, Ovechkin would join Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky as the only players in NHL history with nine 50 goal seasons. Ovechkin is one of four players in NHL history to record at least 10 40-goal seasons (Gretzky: 12; Marcel Dionne: 10; Mario Lemieux: 10). Ovechkin has scored 15 of his 21 goals on the road this season, which is the most road goals in the NHL. With 345 career away goals, Ovechkin is now two goals shy of passing Marcel Dionne (346) for the sixth-most road goals in NHL history.

Orlov is one of six current players to record at least 20 assists in four straight seasons for Washington. Sammy Saves - Ilya Samsonov became the fourth goaltender is franchise history to record eight wins in his first 10 starts, joining Bob Mason (8-1-1; 1983-84 – 1984-85), Jim Carey (8-1-1; 1994-95) and Semyon Varlamov (8-0-1; 2008-09 – 2009-10).
