Clendening, 26, has recorded three shots and a +1 plus/minus rating in four games with the Blue Jackets this season. Signed by Columbus as a free agent to a one-year, two-way NHL/AHL contract on July 1, 2018, he has registered 4-20-24, 49 penalty minutes and a +11 plus/minus rating in 90 career NHL games with the Blue Jackets, Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks. The Niagara Falls, New York native ranks eighth among AHL defensemen in penalty minutes and ninth-T in assists and leads the Monsters in assists, penalty minutes and plus/minus rating with 4-32-36, 98 penalty minutes and a +17 plus/minus rating in 44 appearances this season. He has registered 32-165-197, 365 penalty minutes and a +48 plus/minus rating in 305 career AHL games from 2012-19. The 6-0, 194-pound blueliner was selected by Chicago in the second round, 36th overall, in the 2011 NHL Draft. The Blue Jackets return to action on Wednesday in Game One of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals when they visit the Tampa Bay Lightning. Game time from Amalie Arena is 7 p.m. ET.     ON THE EFFECTIVE USE OF PROXY WARFARE by Andrew Lewis Peek A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland May 2021 2021 Andrew Peek All rights reserved Abstract This dissertation asks a simple question: how are states most effectively conducting proxy warfare in the modern international system? It answers this question by conducting a comparative study of the sponsorship of proxy forces. It uses process tracing to examine five cases of proxy warfare and predicts that the differentiation in support for each proxy impacts their utility. In particular, it proposes that increasing the principal-agent distance between sponsors and proxies might correlate with strategic effectiveness. That is, the less directly a proxy is supported and controlled by a sponsor, the more effective the proxy becomes. Strategic effectiveness here is conceptualized as consisting of two key parts: a proxy’s operational capability and a sponsor’s plausible deniability. These should be in inverse relation to each other: the greater and more overt a sponsor’s support is to a proxy, the more capable – better armed, better trained – its proxies should be on the battlefield. However, this close support to such proxies should also make the sponsor’s influence less deniable, and thus incur strategic costs against both it and the proxy. These costs primarily consist of external balancing by rival states, the same way such states would balance against conventional aggression. Conversely, the more deniable such support is – the more indirect and less overt – the less balancing occurs.

They'll look to match a team record with their sixth straight home victory Friday night in their Nationwide Arena season finale against the league-worst Buffalo Sabres. Columbus (40-35-5) moved to 10-0-1 in its last 11 games with Wednesday's 5-0 victory over Toronto. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 35 shots and Scott Hartnell had a goal and an assist. The Blue Jackets improved the league's fourth-worst home mark to 18-20-2, a mark that represents one of their biggest problems. They won six in a row at home from Dec. 26, 2007-Jan. 15, 2008. ''For me, it definitely comes down to our home record,'' said coach Todd Richards, who has matched Ken Hitchcock as the franchise's winningest coach with 125. ''What we need to do is establish our game here at home and make this a tough building to play in." Maybe the biggest issue is that Columbus has exceeded 500 man-games lost to injury. That figure is a team record and the NHL's highest total this season. "One thing about Columbus right now, they're on a roll," Buffalo coach Ted Nolan said. "I think they've won 10 out of the last 11 games. Barring injuries, they would probably be in the playoffs right now." The latest health issue is the wrist and hand of Cam Atkinson, who was reportedly slashed accidentally by a teammate's skate.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 15, 2017 COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS PLACE D GABRIEL CARLSSON ON INJURED RESERVE AND RECALL D MARKUS NUTIVAARA FROM AHL’S CLEVELAND MONSTERS COLUMBUS, OHIO --- The Columbus Blue Jackets have retroactively placed defenseman Gabriel Carlsson on Injured Reserve and recalled defenseman Markus Nutivaara from the Cleveland Monsters, Columbus’ American Hockey League affiliate, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. Carlsson, 20, who is day-to-day with an upper body injury suffered on Friday, October 13 vs. the New York Rangers, is eligible to come off Injured Reserve on Saturday, October 21. He recorded an assist in four games this season prior to the injury and has 0-2-2 in six career NHL games with the Jackets since making his NHL debut at the end of last season. He also made his American Hockey League debut in 2016-17, recording 0-1-1 in three contests with the Cleveland Monsters. The Orebro, Sweden native notched 3-12-15 and eight penalty minutes in 92 career Swedish Hockey League contests from 2014-17. He was Columbus' second first-round pick, 29th overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft. Nutivaara, 23, has registered four shots in three games with the Monsters this season. He posted 2-5-7 with six penalty minutes and had a +7 plus/minus rating in 66 games with the Blue Jackets in his first NHL campaign in 2016-17. The blueliner made his NHL debut on Oct. 13, 2016 vs. Boston and tallied his first NHL goal on Nov. 12, 2016 vs. St. Louis.
