FLYERS VS. LIGHTNING

The Flyers and Lightning played two of their three scheduled games during the regular season. The Flyers were in Tampa preparing to close out the season series against the Lightning on March 12 when the NHL paused its season due to the COVID-19 crisis.

SEASON SERIES

Saturday, January 11, 2020 – Tampa Bay 1, Flyers 0 at Wells Fargo Center: Pat Maroon scored the game’s only goal 7:27 into the second period in Tampa Bay’s 1-0 win. The goal spoiled an otherwise perfect night for Carter Hart, who stopped the other 27 shots he saw on the evening. Andrei Vasilevskiy turned away all 23 shots he saw to earn the win. Stars of the Game: 1 – Andrei Vasilevskiy; 2 – Carter Hart; 3 – Pat Maroon.

Saturday, February 15, 2020 – Tampa Bay 5, Flyers 3 at Amalie Arena: The Flyers chipped away at deficits of 3-0 and 4-1 to come within a goal with 3:45 remaining, but a late empty-netter quelled the momentum in a 5-3 setback in Tampa. The Lightning scored twice in the first and then again 2:35 into the second to take the early advantage; Ivan Provorov then got the Flyers on the board on the power play 8:57 into the middle frame to make it 3-1. The Flyers nearly cut the lead to one several times in the first 10 minutes of the third only to be foiled by Andrei Vasilevskiy, and Brayden Point’s subsequent goal with 7:26 left restored the three-goal lead. The Flyers picked up another power-play tally from James van Riemsdyk with 4:29 to play and got another marker from Claude Giroux 44 seconds later, but the Flyers couldn’t get any closer, and Nikita Kucherov bagged the empty-netter with 22 seconds left. Carter Hart took the loss with 19 saves on 23 shots, while Vasilevskiy made 30 saves in the win. Stars of the Game: 1 – Andrei Vasilevskiy; 2 – Steve Stamkos; 3 – Brayden Point.

ROUND ROBIN RECAP

Sunday, August 2, 2020 – Flyers 4, Boston 1: The Flyers scored three times in the second period to pull away from the Bruins in the first game of round-robin competition for both teams. Michael Raffl opened the scoring 5:33 into the second period to give the Flyers the 1-0 lead, and Nate Thompson added a second goal just under four minutes later. Chris Wagner banked home a puck off a skate in front with 1:09 left in the second period, but Phil Myers answered that eight seconds later off the ensuring faceoff to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead at the second intermission. Scott Laughton closed out the scoring 4:07 into the third. Carter Hart turned away 34 shots to earn the win in his first Stanley Cup Playoff appearance, while Jaroslav Halak stopped 25 in the loss. Stars of the Game: 1 – Carter Hart; 2 – Michael Raff; 3 – Ivan Provorov.

Thursday, August 6, 2020 – Flyers 3, Washington 1: Scott Laughton scored twice and added an assist while Kevin Hayes provided three assists and Travis Konecny added a pair of helpers to engineer the win over Washington. Konecny and Hayes combined to set up Laughton’s first goal with 6:57 left in the first period, and then Hayes set up Travis Sanheim with 8:30 left in the second period to make it a 2-0 game. ROUND ROBIN HIGHLIGHTS

The Flyers have allowed just two goals through the first two games, which is the fewest total and per-game average (1.00) in the Eastern Conference. Only Colorado has done better, with one shutout and one goal allowed across its first two games.

The Flyers have averaged 25 shots per game over the first two contests, which is the second fewest in the league, but have allowed just 26 shots per game, which is tied for the third-stingiest average in the Qualifiers.

The club has won 59.1 percent of its faceoffs over the first two games, which is second-best in the league in the early going behind St. Louis, and well ahead of the rest of the Eastern Conference. is second-best at 54.3 percent.

Kevin Hayes has four assists over the first two games after his three-assist game vs. Washington. Hayes is one of several first-year Flyers who brings extensive playoff experience to the roster, having appeared in 34 career games with the NY Rangers (all under Alain Vigneault) and six with the . Hayes was part of the Rangers’ run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014.

Travis Sanheim and Phil Myers, who have played the first two games together as a defensive pairing, are each plus-5 through the first two contests. They are among the top 10 in the league in the category. Each has scored a goal, with Myers tallying vs. Boston and Sanheim finding the net vs. Washington.

Ivan Provorov played 27:26 vs. Washington and is averaging 26:09 per game so far in the round robin, which is the eighth-highest average ice time across the league.

2019-20 SEASON SUMMARY The Flyers were one of the NHL’s hottest teams at the time of the NHL’s pause following the games of March 11. They were 9-1 in their final 10 games before the break, having rattled off a nine-game from Feb. 18 – March 7 that was ended by the Bruins on March 10 in the Flyers’ final game before the pause. The Flyers were in Tampa preparing to take on the Lightning on March 12 when the season stopped.

The Flyers were 19-6-1 over their final 26 games from January 8 – March 10, which tied them with the Bruins for the best record in the NHL during that stretch. They outscored their opponents 94-62 during that run.

The Flyers started the season in Europe, playing an in Lausanne, Switzerland before opening the 2019-20 season with a 4-3 win over the Blackhawks in Prague, Czech Republic, on October 4. That was 298 days ago, or nine months and 24 days. Following the Europe trip, the Flyers returned home for one game before embarking on a West Coast swing. Between their departure for Switzerland on September 27 and their return home from on October 17, the Flyers traveled more than 13,500 miles over the course of 20 days.

The Flyers compiled a record of 22-8-5 against the other 11 teams that qualified for the expanded Eastern Conference playoff format, good for a .700 points percentage. The only playoff teams against which the Flyers had a sub-.500 record were the NY Islanders (0-2-1) and Tampa Bay (0-2-0).

AROUND THE RINK

Joel Farabee became the first Flyer born in the 2000s to appear for the team in a playoff game when he made his debut Thursday. Farabee became the first 2000-birth-year player in Flyers history when he made his NHL debut back in November. Egor Zamula, who spent this past season with Calgary of the , is the only other 2000-born player on the Flyers roster; he has yet to appear in anything other than an exhibition game for the team.

Carter Hart became the youngest goaltender in Flyers history to win a playoff game with Sunday’s victory over Boston. By doing so at the age of 21 years and 355 days, Hart surpassed the previous mark held by Pete Peeters of 22 years, 235 days set on April 8, 1980. Hart, who will turn 22 on August 13, set a franchise record as the youngest Flyers goalie to record a shutout back on Oct. 9 vs. NJD. His 43 games this season were the most ever by a Flyers goalie under the age of 22, surpassing Dominic Roussel, who played 17 games for the team as a 21-year-old in the 1991-92 season.

The Flyers were the league’s best faceoff team this year at 54.6 percent. It’s the second year in a row they’ve led the league in the category after going 54.7 percent last season. Sean Couturier led the NHL in faceoff percentage at 59.6 pct (min 50 faceoffs) while Claude Giroux was fourth (59.0 pct).

The Flyers last won a playoff series in 2012 when they took the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals vs. Pittsburgh in six games. The team’s current drought of seven seasons without a series win is the longest in franchise history. The Flyers have four players remaining on their roster from the 11-12 team – Claude Giroux, Jake Voracek and Sean Couturier have been with the team ever since, while James van Riemsdyk departed the Flyers following that run and played six seasons in Toronto before coming back to Philadelphia in 2018.

Giroux and van Riemsdyk were each part of Philadelphia’s 2010 Stanley Cup Final run, which marked van Riemsdyk’s rookie season and Giroux’s second NHL campaign. Giroux had 10 goals and 11 assists in that playoff season, including the overtime game-winner in Game 3 of the Final vs. Chicago. Tampa Bay defenseman Braydon Coburn is the only other remaining player from that team that is still active in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. Flyers assistant coach Ian Laperriere was also a part of that team, as was NBC rinkside analyst Brian Boucher.
