NOTE OF THE NIGHT Nicky 900 – Following a four point night (2g, 2a) against the New Jersey Devils, Nicklas Backstrom (239g, 661a) became the second player in franchise history to record 900 points (Ovechkin: 1,246 points). He became the first player from the 2006 NHL Draft class to reach the mark and the seventh Swedish-born player in NHL history. With 661 career assists, Backstrom is already the franchise leader in the respective category and ranks fifth among Swedish-born players in NHL history. Backstrom's four point game marked his 23rd in his career and his first this season. The Capitals hold a 22-0-1 record when Backstrom records four points. Since returning from an eight game absence due to injury on Dec. 9, Backstrom has nine points (4g, 5a) in five games, leads the Capitals in points over that span and is tied for third in the NHL in scoring since Dec. 9.

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS 900 for the Duo – Last night against the New Jersey Devils, Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom played in their 900th regular season game together. The duo has led the Capitals to a record of 535-262-103 - good for a .652 point percentage - which is equivalent to 107 standings points over an 82-game season. In games together, Ovechkin has 999 points (549g, 450a), while Backstrom has 873 points (231g, 643a). Since Backstrom’s NHL debut on Oct. 5, 2007, against the Atlanta Thrashers – where each recorded an assist in the game – Backstrom has assisted on 256 of Ovechkin’s career goals, more than double any other teammate in Ovechkin’s career (John Carlson: second with 104 assists). Backstrom and Ovechkin became the 21st pair in NHL history to play at least 900 games together.

Johnny C – John Carlson leads all NHL defensemen in goals (13), assists (34), points (47) and ranks third in the NHL in assists (Connor McDavid: 39; Leon Draisaitl: 37). Carlson has recorded a point in 14 of his last 20 games (6g, 18a) and 26 of his 36 games this season, including a separate nine and eight game point streak (nine games: Oct. 8 through 24, 5g, 13a; eight games: Nov. 7 through 20, 1g, 12a). Carlson is on pace for 107 points over an 82-game season. Only five defensemen in NHL history have recorded more than 100 points in a season (Bobby Orr: six times; Paul Coffey: five times; Denis Potvin, Al MacInnis and Brian Leetch: each once). Larry Murphy holds the Caps franchise record for most points by a defenseman in a season with 81 (1986-87: 23g, 58a).

• 47 in 36 - Only four defensemen, including Carlson, have recorded at least 47 points in their team's first 36 games since 1979-80 (Coffey: three times; MacInnis: 1991; Leetch: 1992).

• Carly in the Clutch - Carlson's six game-winning goals are tied for the most in the NHL (David Pastrnak and Leon Draisaitl) and lead all defensemen. Carlson is now one game-winning goal shy of passing Kevin Hatcher (6, 1992-93) for the Capitals' single-season franchise record by a defensemen. The NHL record is held by Oliver Ekman-Larsson (2015-16: 8). Additionally, Carlson's nine points in the final 10 minutes of regulation and in overtime this season are the fourth most on the team (T.J. Oshie: 11; Alex Ovechkin: 10; Tom Wilson, 10).

HistOvi – At 680 career goals, Alex Ovechkin is now five goals shy of passing Teemu Selanne (684) for the 11th most goals in NHL history. On pace for 50 goals this season, Ovechkin, who turned 34 on Sept. 17, is aiming to become the second player in NHL history to record at least 50 goals in a season at the age of 34 or older (John Bucyk: 51 goals in 1970-71 at the age of 35). Nine players in NHL history have recorded at least 40 goals at the age of 34 or older. Additionally, with another 50 goal season, Ovechkin would join Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky as the only players in NHL history with nine 50 goal seasons. Ovechkin is one of four players in NHL history to record at least 10 40-goal seasons (Gretzky: 12; Marcel Dionne: 10; Mario Lemieux: 10).

• Another Victim - Last night against the New Jersey Devils, Ovechkin scored his first career goal against MacKenzie Blackwood, the 139th different goaltender Ovechkin has scored against in his career. In NHL history, 6,349 players have played and recorded 139 total goals or fewer in their career.

Among the goaltenders that rank in the top 50 in wins in NHL history, Holtby is the only goaltender to play in fewer than 500 career games and ranks first in win percentage (.613). Additionally, Holtby ranks ninth among active goaltenders in wins. This season, Holtby's 16 wins are tied for second in the NHL and his three regulation losses are tied for the fewest among goaltenders with at least 13 wins (Tuukka Rask). Holtby has led his team to earn a point in 17 of his last 20 games (15-2-2) and 20 of his 25 games (16-4-4). Since the 2013-14 season, Holtby leads the NHL in wins (236).

He was a finalist for the Jack Adams Award in 2014 and 2019.
