    1 2014 HOCKEY ARBITRATION COMPETITON OF CANADA Cody Franson v. Toronto Maple Leafs Submission on Behalf of Cody Franson Midpoint: $3.3 million Submission by Team 6 2 I. INTRODUCTION This brief will analyze the past output and contribution of Cody Franson (the "Player" or "Mr. Franson"). Mr. Franson is a right-handed defenseman for the Toronto Maple Leafs organization (the "Club" or the "Leafs").1 Mr. Franson signed a three year entry level Standard Player Contract (SPC) in 2006 with the Nashville Predators ("Nashville"), however that contract was put on hold until 2007 as he returned to junior hockey.2 Mr. Franson re-signed with the predators before being traded to the Leafs in 2011.3 Mr. Franson was 19 years of age on September 15, 2006, and has acquired more than four years of professional playing experience. Mr. Franson is therefore eligible for salary arbitration pursuant to section 12.1 of the National Hockey League Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).4 According to the CBA, the following evidence is to be considered in determining a player's salary arbitration compensation: overall performance including NHL official stats of player in previous seasons; the number of games played by the player, his injuries or illnesses during the preceding seasons; the length of the service of that player to the Club; the overall contribution of the player to the Club; any special qualities of leadership or public appeal; the overall performance of players alleged to be comparable to the Player whose salary is in dispute; and the compensation of players alleged to be comparable to the Player whose salary is in dispute.5 As the evidence in this brief will show, Mr.

    Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips March 7, 2019 Burden of captaincy, Sabres' struggles not slowing Jack Eichel's play By Lance Lysowski The Buffalo News March 6, 2019 While his Buffalo Sabres teammates filtered out of the visitors' dressing room in Toronto's Scotiabank Arena on Saturday night, Jack Eichel sat at his stall waiting for reporters to finish speaking with Jason Pominville. Eichel, the 22-year-old captain, has made himself available to the media all season, no matter the result. Since a 10-game win streak ended, Eichel has fielded questions about the team's continued defensive lapses and a number of epic meltdowns. In addition, he has had to try to explain the Sabres' inability to win consecutive games since Dec. 13. The responsibility of leading a young team or answering post-game questions during trying times can wear on the NHL's most experienced players, yet Eichel has continued to flourish on the ice. "He’s a special player, a special person," Sabres defenseman Zach Bogosian, an alternate captain, said following practice Wednesday. "He’s done a lot of really good things for this city and this organization. People tend to forget he’s only 22. He’s got a lot on his plate, a lot on his shoulders for a young guy. He’s handled it well. I think at times it’s been tough, but he brings his play every night – his effort, his attitude. He really wants to win." Eichel has done his part in trying to revive the Sabres. His 25 goals are one off from setting a career high, and he already has achieved his best totals in assists (47) and points (72) with 16 regular-season games to play.

He loves to play defense. Embraces the penalty kill. He loves to fire the puck from the offensive blue line as well. He eats up opportunities on the power play. So when looking at his average ice time, which clocks in at an average of 24 minutes, 56 seconds a game – which is tied for the ninth highest average in the NHL – he simply shrugs. “I really like to play a lot,” Risotlainen said. “I think my conditioning and that kind of thing feels good and I think I can handle that big ice time. It feels good to play hard. “Oh yeah. If it’s my choice I would like to play 60 minutes but I think that’s a little impossible.” Expect more of the same from Ristolainen when the Buffalo Sabres hit the road for the first time this season. The Sabres play at the Florida Panthers Thursday (7:35 p.m., MSG, Radio 550 AM) and stay in the Sunshine State to meet the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. Sabres coach Dan Bylsma said Ristolainen’s ice time is by design. “He’s playing in all situations for us,” Bylsma said. “He’s playing against other teams’ best players in defensive situations so it’s going to result in being out there in the 20-25 minute rage.” “I like that,” Ristolainen said of the ice time.

The teams will be vying for a berth in the Stanley Cup Final against the winner of the other Semifinals series between the Vegas Golden Knights and Montreal Canadiens. The Lightning will be skating in their ninth Game 7 in franchise history (5-3) and for the sixth time in the final-four round (2-3). Only three other clubs – all from the Original Six – have played as many such contests in the Semifinals: the Boston Bruins (8 GP; 4-4), Detroit Red Wings (6 GP; 5-1) and Chicago Blackhawks (6 GP; 3-3). Lightning defenseman Ryan McDonagh has made a team-high eight career appearances in a Game 7 (6-2), one of 10 active players with at least six career Game 7 wins. McDonagh is attempting to join two active NHL players with seven-or-more such wins: Carl Hagelin (8-2) and Anton Stralman (7-2). Other players on the Lightning roster with at least five previous Game 7s are defenseman Victor Hedman (3-3) and forwards Steven Stamkos (3-3) and Pat Maroon (2-3). The Islanders, who blanked the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0 in Game 7 in the Second Round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, are competing in a Game 7 in consecutive seasons for the first time in franchise history.
