Historical Note:

Mary Baker Eddy lived at 384 Beacon Street (later 400 Beacon Street) in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, from 1908 to 1910. Several reasons may have accounted for for Eddy’s move to Chestnut Hill from Pleasant View in Concord, New Hampshire, where she had lived since 1892—including the need for more space; a desire to be in a more secure and private location that was closer to Boston; and the effort to ease anxiety that was swirling over the Next Friends lawsuit (Gillian Gill. Mary Baker Eddy. (Cambridge: Perseus Books, 1998), 522-523). Before the fall of 1907, Eddy directed Archibald McLellan and Alfred Farlow to find an estate near Boston, in Newton or Brookline, urging them to keep the pending move a secret. She wrote this to McClellan, then director and one of three trustees for Eddy’s estate: “I want to buy in Brookline Mass a large lot of land large enough for two dwelling houses a stable and a cottage I want it to be 100 feet from the street I want it where no nuisances would be allowed. This is to be kept secret till it is accomplished It can be done by outsiders and not in my name” (L07056).

McLellan and Farlow found the suitable 12-acre estate, constructed out of pudding-stone, granite, and bluestone, at 384 Beacon Street in the village of Chestnut Hill. In order to keep the purchase out of Eddy’s name and therefore maintain secrecy, McLellan purchased the property in October 1907. Secrecy was not Eddy’s only intent. In a letter to Farlow dated September 17, 1907, she wrote, “I want a window in my room like the one here [Pleasant View], ― and that I can see the street and carriages passing by from ― my window. It relieves my lonely hours” (L01719). Renovations began on the house and continued through January 1908. Solon Spencer Beman of Chicago conducted the work, which included the addition of a 10-room wing to accommodate the household staff and the installation of electric lighting and an elevator (L07099). Eddy’s rooms, located on the second floor, included a study with bay windows like those at Pleasant View. The property also included a carriage house.

Eddy traveled by train and carriage to her new home on January 26, 1908. Through February additional modifications were made to the windows and rooms on the second floor. It was at Chestnut Hill that Eddy wrote the Trustees of the Society, instructing them to publish a daily newspaper—The Christian Science Monitor—which circulated its first issue on November 25, 1908. Chestnut Hill was Eddy’s last residence and she lived there until her passing on December 3, 1910. 3 Scope and Content Note The Chestnut Hill Books is a collection of over 600 volumes present at Eddy’s Chestnut Hill residence of Mary Baker Eddy at the time of her passing in 1910. Books were located in several rooms of the house, including the first-floor music room; the back parlor; the library; the second-floor west room; Eddy’s bedroom; Eddy’s study; Eddy’s dressing room; and Eddy’s sitting room.

Books include Bibles; Bible reference books; general reference books, such as dictionaries and encyclopedias; books on poetry; song books; travel books; books about New Hampshire; and other books. The bulk of this collection includes books from the first-floor library. Eighty-seven of these volumes are annotated or inscribed. 4 Location at Chestnut Hill: First-floor, music room Extent: 1 Item No.: Title: Date:

Christianity, Then the inventive genius of mortal minds sets about clothing the divine idea with human conceptions of beauty and goodness. All this, however, tends toward the final destruction of all theories that are not demonstrable in Divine Science and for this reason let us welcome the new book "God in his world."
