PREFACE. r I ^HE past thirty years have witnessed the issue of a host of Hymnals, each having its own special feature or guiding purpose. The Tractarian Movement and, at an earlier period, the Methodist Revival, awakened emotions and left tastes and ten dencies which contributed largely to this outburst of the Churches into song. Roundell Palmer's Book Praise and Ancient and of ', Hymns Modern^ published in 1860, of which a million copies have been sold every year, are significant landmarks. This multiplication of Hymnals has naturally excited a new and keener curiosity regarding the makers and the historic associations of the Hymns and Psalms with which our lips have become so familiar. The present volume seeks to meet and guide this new takes of our choicest sacred curiosity ; some PREFACE. verse and endeavours to throw around it the living interest of curious origin, personal incident, and historic episode, which weave for us a veritable romance, the Romance of Sacred Piaise. The scope of the book is too wide to leave room for much literary criticism or exhaustive detail. It makes no claim to be a Dictionary of Hymnology, or complete book of reference. Specialists must go elsewhere. It perhaps attempts to cover too wide a field, and, in consequence, much that was written has had to be excluded but its is to be a ; object companion to the entire Praise, literary and musical, of the Christian Church, giving to well-known Psalms, Hymns, and Tunes the charm of having a history. The facts have been gleaned from many fields. For the story of the Psalter I have been under great obligations to Dean Stanley, Four Friends (Ewald), Maclaren, Van Dyke, and Dr. Ker. I have also to thank Dean Perowne for courteous and cordial permission to make frequent use of his vivid translation of The Psalms. this Although work is not critical, the conclu sions of Professor Robertson Smith and Canon PREFACE. Cheyne on the one hand, and of Canon Fausset on the other, have not been overlooked. The historic setting of many of the Psalms is a matter of and some of I probability only ; my positions assume with considerable diffidence. In relating the story of the Hymnal, I have made large use of the biographies of many of the Hymn-writers; and, whilst making fresh additions to modern Hymnology, I owe much to Duffield, King, and other previous workers in the same field. This Companion would be incomplete without some account of the makers of the Music to which our best-loved are wedded and this hymns ; part of the work has been committed to the hands of my musical friend the author of United Praise. Bible, like each separate Book in it, has a THEnatural history. It was not always a bound volume. Its sixty-six Books sprang from distinct human experiences, and cover a period as long as the Christian era. We are, perhaps, prepared to believe that the historical Books were the product of natural circumstances as truly as were Homer's Odyssey 1 and Bunyan's Pilgrim s Progress; but to one Book we have not been in the habit of applying this conception. The Psalter has been to some a sort of Melchisedec in the Bible, "without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days nor end of life." Others have always had the vague idea that to David belonged the entire Book. Are they not called "The Psalms of David"? It is wonderful how devoutly we have read and loved them, how profitably we have used them, and yet how little curiosity we have shown as to the ROMANCE OF THE PSALTER. lives and histories and experiences which they crystallize. Who collected them ? Are the inscriptions pre fixed to most of them of the same date as the Psalms themselves ? How can we understand and use the Psalms of Cursing ? What are the Songs of Degrees ? " Why that clause at the end of Ps. Ixxii., The prayers of David the Son of Jesse are ended," while, later, several Psalms bearing his name are given ? " What is the reference in Lift up your heads, O " ye gates ? These and scores of questions like these we have been content to leave in nebulous mystery. It would add greatly to the charm and living interest of the Psalms if we could give the Romance of their history. It is possible to do for some of them what we can " do for Lyte's Abide with me," Newman's "Lead, " kindly Light," and Havergal's Thy life was given for me." The former is not so easy a task. The Psalms are so ancient that fewer sidelights remain for us. But we can do much to surround them with tales of their origin, the tragic and pathetic episodes of their history. Regard the Book for the nonce purely as a hymnal, Christ's Hymnal, used by the Jews as their Book of Praise. Examine it as you would examine Hymns Ancient and Modern. Its name explains its contents. As the lyre gave its name to lyric poetry, the stringed instrument to GENERAL SURVEY OF THE PSALTER.

It considers Latin an overt and beautiful sign of unity, a mighty instrument for safeguarding and spreading Christian Truth in its fullness, and for performing sacred rites. Our most Holy Father and Lord Pope John XXIII has lifted it up from neglect and contempt and firmly asserted its official, confirmed status within the Church. In a solemn ceremony on February 22, he signed with his own hand the Apostolic Constitution “Veterum Sapientia” in the Basilica of St. Peter, laying the foundations and establishing the principles by which this language, which is proper to the Church and forever bound into Her life, shall be restored to its ancient place of glory and honor. No one, least of all this Sacred Congregation, can be unaware what great and arduous effort this most noble and necessary task will require, on account of the unfortunate state of learning and of use of the Latin language today, and because of conditions existing in various places, times, and nations.

    ALH Online Review, Series XIX 1 Christopher N. Phillips, The Hymnal: A Reading History (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2018), 252 pp. Reviewed by Paul C. Gutjahr, Indiana University For anyone familiar with the original novel, watching Michael Mann’s popular 1992 motion picture adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans starring Daniel Day-Lewis becomes an exercise in absence, for Mann deletes from his movie the sometimes comic, sometimes heroic figure of the psalm-singing David Gamut. Thinking of David Gamut in relation to Christopher Phillips’s new book, The Hymnal: A Reading History, is instructive for two reasons. It underscores Phillips’s point that the singing of psalms and hymns was ubiquitous in early American culture, and it also points to the fact that attention to the importance and ubiquity of such singing (and printing) has been as absent from scholarly discussions of the era as the figure of David Gamut is in Mann’s film. Phillips has done a great service to those interested in the areas of American poetry, book history, and lived religion in his meticulously researched, broad-reaching study. Following in the footsteps of book historians like Michael Cohen and Anthony Grafton, Phillips is interested in the “social lives” of hymnbooks. He studies them not only as carrier of texts and traditions but as an important “part of the everyday social practices of hundreds of thousands of English-speakers across two centuries” (ix). More importantly, through a systematic study of the use, first, of psalms and then the more elastically biblical poetic musical form of Scripture and scriptural truths commonly known as hymns, Phillips goes a great distance in showing just how pervasive and important hymns, and their books, were in the development of early American print culture more generally.

ALAN ROSE, B.A. Volume 49 October 1993 CHOSEN BY GOD: THE FEMALE TRAVELLING PREACHERS OF EARLY PRIMITIVE METHODISM The Wesley Historical Society Lecture 1993 t is just over a hundred years since the last Primitive Methodist female travelling preacher died. Elizabeth Bultitude (1809-1890) I had become a travelling preacher in 1832 and she superannuated after 30 years in 1862, dying in 1890. Of all the female itinerants the first, Sarah Kirkland (1794-1880), and the last, Elizabeth Bultitude, are the best known, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Forty years ago Wesley Swift, wrote in the Proceedings about the female preach­ ers of Primitive Methodism: We have been able to identify more than forty women itinerants, but the full total must be considerably more.\ This was the starting point of my inquiry. First it is necessary to take a brief look at the whole question of women preaching. The Society of Friends, because they maintained both sexes equally received Inner Light, insisted that anyone who felt so called should be allowed to preach. So it was that many women within the Quaker movement were able to exercise their gifts of preaching without restriction. Many women undertook preaching tours both in this country and abroad, finding release from male-dominated society and religion and equal status with I Proceedings, xxix, p 79. 78 PROCEEDINGS OF THE WFSLEY HISTORICAL SocIETY men in preaching the word of God. For many years female preach­ ing was, on the whole, limited to the Quakers while the other denominations ignored it as being against Scripture, especially the Pauline injunction about women keeping silence in the church.

Gross, Doctor of Philosophy, 1994 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Howard Serwer, Professor of Music, Musicology Department, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland As part of an effort to maintain their German culture, the late eighteenth-century Mennonites of Eastern Pennsylvania instituted hymn-singing instruction in the elementary community schoolhouse curriculum. Beginning in 1780 (or perhaps earlier), much of the hymn-tune repertoire, previously an oral tradition, was recorded in musical notation in manuscript songbooks (Notenbüchlein) compiled by local schoolmasters in Mennonite communities north of Philadelphia. The practice of giving manuscript songbooks to diligent singing students continued until 1835 or later. These manuscript songbooks are the only extant clue to the hymn repertoire and performance practice of these Mennonite communities at the turn of the nineteenth century. By identifying the tunes that recur most frequently, one can determine the core repertoire of the Franconia Mennonites at this time, a repertoire that, on balance, is strongly pietistic in nature. Musically, the Notenbüchlein document the shift that occured when these Mennonite communities incorporated written transmission into their oral tradition.

Anecdotally I am sure that we all recognise that this is the case; and indeed if one were to look Charles up in more or less anyone of the many general biographical dictionaries that include an entry on him one will find it repeated often enough: Charles is portrayed as a poet and a hymn­ writer; while comparatively little, if any, attention is paid to other aspects of his work. On a more scholarly level too one can find it. Obviously there are exceptions, but in general historians of Methodism in particular and eighteenth-century Church history more widely have painted a picture of Charles that is all too monochrome and Charles' role as the 'Sweet Singer of Methodism' is as unquestioned as his broader significance is undeveloped. The reasons for this lack of full attention being paid to Charles are several and it is not (contrary to what is usually said) simply a matter of Charles being in his much more famous brother's shadow; a lesser light, as it were, belng outshone by a greater one.
