Vin Gris of Pinot Noir, Robert Sinskey, Napa, USA 2015 65 Outstanding American Rosé - Napa isn’t necessarily known for its Rosé, pinot noir is the only here lending its hue to the juice. Floral aromas of cherry blossom, lilac and chamomile meet flavours of white peach, Pink Lady apple, Meyer lemon and kumquat. A beautiful wine.

Viña Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva, Bodegas Lopez de Heredia, Rioja, Spain 2008 75 One of the most unusual and outstanding rosés in recent times (and not so recent)- the juice is aged in barrel for 4 years before another 4 in bottle prior to release. Beguiling, a touch of oxidative fruit, but an incredible freshness. A nod to the old days of Rioja but with every bit of modern verve and tenacity.

Sauvignon , Domaine Berthier, Cote de Thongue 2018 24 A classy Southern French blend- the Viognier tempers an otherwise sharp Sauvignon and adds a soft floral dimension.

Les Nuages Sauvignon, Touraine, Loire 2018 25 Touraine is one of the spiritual homes of Sauvignon – a bone dry, crisp wine with trademark notes of green apple, citrus and wild flowers.

Drouard de Sevre et Maine Sur Lie, Loire 2018 26 Under new legislation, these wines will become “Grand Cru” – impressive fruit from 40-year-old vines, this classic style is taken to the next level. With little , the wine can appear a little hazy, but this just keeps adding to the depth of flavour.

Horgelus, /Sauvignon, Côte de Gascogne 2018 (Vegan) 30 The Manseng grape give richness and complexity, lifted by the floral addition of Sauvignon for a very pretty easy drinker. Think ripe apples and honeysuckle but remaining dry.

Picpoul de Pinet, Laurence de Veyrac, Languedoc 2018 34 Laurence de Veyrac Picpoul de Pinet is a light yellow in colour with green glints. On the nose at first there are exotic fruit aromas which develop into floral notes of flowers, apple and citrus fruit. The palate is strong with stone fruit flavours balanced by crisp minerality, flinty tones and fresh lychee notes. On the finish there is a touch of candied fruit sweetness.

Mâcon Lugny, les Charmes, Camille Paquet, Burgundy 2017 36 Camille Paquet confirms his considerable talent with this, the second vintage of his Mâcon-Lugny Les Charmes. From a prime, southeast-facing parcel, it’s characterised by aromas of stone-fruit, and a ripe, round palate with a refreshing of lemon to finish. Seven months on the add body and complexity.

Bourgogne Blanc, Domaine Bernard Defaix, Burgundy 38 Located just south of Chablis, Domaine Bernard Defaix is very much a family business. Bernard, the fourth generation in this family of winegrowers, handed over the reins some twenty years ago to his two sons, Didier, who is in charge of the , and Sylvain who is the . This is a clean, fresh version of Chardonnay with great balance and finesse and a beautiful aromatic structure.

Bourgogne Aligote Domaine Roux Père et Fils, Burgundy 2017 40 Originally flavoured with cassis to create the classic Kir, Aligote now stands on its own as a top-quality grape. The wine is pale gold in colour. It has floral aromas of hawthorn and acacia alongside green fruit. On the palate, this tender wine has notes of hazelnuts on the finish.

G de Guiraud Bordeaux Blanc 2016 40 A bone dry Bordeaux Blanc with brilliant acidity and minerality. Normally used in , producing some of the best sweet wines in the world, the blend of Sauvignon and Semillon makes an equally delicious dry wine. Domaine Mittnacht “Gyotaku” – Alsace, France 2018 (Biodynamic) 42 Subtle aromatic blend of Riesling, , and Gewurtztraminer – steely, fresh and with elegent depth flaunts the style of the region in an accessible way with little residual sugar. Crisp and refreshing is perfect with oysters and even fish and chips!

Pouilly Fumé, Domaine Debastien Treuillet, Loire 2017 42 The majority of Sebastien’s 12 hectares are in the Pouilly Fumé appellation. It’s here that Sebastien produces a wonderful example of the classic dry, flinty based wine. His Pouilly Fumé has great depth and a tangy mineral complexity.

Berthenet Montagny Tête de Cuvée, Burgundy 2017 44 Sustainable and natural winemaking, letting grass grow naturally between vines rather than using herbicides gives a fresh and vibrant finish to this elegant Burgundy, not too weighty but a step up from Chablis style.

Doucet Sancerre, Loire 2018 55 Third generation Sancerre producers, expressing an intensity of wildflowers and green apple skin on the nose with distinctive bright minerality and refreshing acidity. Great balance of freshness and flavour.

Domaine de Vauroux Chablis 1er Cru Montmains, Burgundy, France 2013 60 Fresh and bright minerality with a rich creaminess – fantastic example of the quality expected from a premier cru Chablis delivering on all levels. There is a touch of age in the bottle now which has calmed the acidity and really dialled up weight, think grilled peaches and buttery notes expected of Meursault.

Renardiere Jurassique Chardonnay, -Pupillin, Jura, France 2016 (Organic) 72 Following organic and biodynamic principals, Jean Michel vinifies using only indigenous with very little (if any) added SO2. From pure limestone terrior, this is rich and smokey with hints of sherry in the background to cut through the fleshy fruits.

Condrieu, St Cosme, Northern Rhonê , France 2016 90 Château de Saint Cosme is the leading estate of Gigondas and produces the benchmark wines of the appellation. Now a biodynamic estate, the wines are. showing classic aromas and flavors of dried apricot, peach, and orange blossom with fennel, anise, and elderflower. Twelve months of aging on its fine lees brings texture to the palate. This is a classic Condrieu.

Jean-Noel Gagnard Bourgogne Hauts-Côtes de Beaune, Burgundy, France 2007 97 With a good amount of age behind it, this is an outstanding example of what Chardonnay can be after over a decade in bottle – nutty, honeyed, rich but still with fruity acidity and spicy complexity. Lightly oxidised, giving some sherry notes in the background, this is definitely grown-ups wine and benefits from some air in the glass and not being too cold.

Domaine Ballot-Millot et Fils Meursault, Burgundy 2017 110 Ballot and Millot families’ viticultural history dates back to the mid 17th century, with a stringent focus in the vineyard on minimal intervention with regards to herbicides and pesticides. Displaying pure minerality alongside the richness expected of a Meursault, nodding towards Puligny-Montrachet in complexity and guaranteed to impress.

Blanc Fumé de Pouilly, Domaine Dagueneau, Loire 2016 120 Didier Dagueneau was known as one of the true legends of the Loire. His Pouilly Fumes have become known as true icons, and as such are incredibly difficult to come by. The Blanc de Fume is exceptional- beautiful aromas, texture and a long delightful finish. Following Didier’s death in 2008 the reins were passed on to his son who is continuing his father’s legacy as he left it- the ultimate expressions of .

Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru“Les Chaumées”, Burgundy 2017 145 Vines dating back to 1930 give an incredibly detailed purity of expression; rich, creamy, smoky – absolutely everything you would expect from an iconic white Burgundy. A stone’s throw from the Grand Cru vineyards of Le Montrachet, Bâtard Montrachet et al, these really does delivery hugely above expectation, a real treat and wonderful example of Chardonnay’s highest potential.

Clos Blanc de Vougeot, 1er Cru, Domaine de la Vougeraie, Burgundy 2016 180 One of the best white Burgundies we’ve tasted in recent times. A mythic and mystical wine, it has the breadth and length of a Meursault combined with the intense minerality of a Chablis.

Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru “Clavoillon”, Burgundy, France 2013 (Biodynamic) 250 Considered by many as the leading house for white Burgundy, Leflaive follow biodynamic methods, meaning no pesticides, herbicides or addition sulphur. A beautiful structured wine, yellow with gold reflections, stone fruits, lemon. Higher in acidity and with more refinement, a truly exceptional expression of the potential of Chardonnay in its spiritual home.

Il Folle Grillo, Sicily, Italy 2018 (Organic) 22 Handpicked from the hills surrounding Marsala are used in this charming, elegant wine. This is unfussy wine, brimming with flavour and freshness.

Pinot Grigio DOC, Italy 2018 28 When Pinot Grigio is good, it’s great. This isn’t supermarket pinot. Cold-ferment techniques used add dimensions to the already quality led wine making from this team in Friuli. Bright almost tropical fruit on the nose and palate, with a touch of spice, all kept in check by a lovely vein of crisp juicy acidity.

Diluvio Albariño, Riax Baixas DOC, Galicia, Spain 2018 32 Galicia is the wet and windy home of the Albariño grape. The best wines are found in the Rías Baixas DOC- The grapes used are of an extraordinary quality, resulting in a wine of incredible purity, minerality and concentration.

Gavi di Gavi, Conti di Alari, Italy 2018 34 A truly top-notch family run Gavi producer, the focus is on an intensely ripe yet freshly modern style of wine. Straw yellow in colour with subtle green reflections. A delicately aromatic and soft nose precedes a crisp and floral palate with peachy undertones and well-balanced structure.

Gruner̈ Veltliner Lossterrassen,̈ Josef & Philipp Brundl Mayer, Austria 2018 36 Appealing nose of apples, fresh citrus and mild flowery aromas, as well as rosewood, green peas and asparagus, fresh and crisp, sappy fruit on the palate followed by a hint of minerals and spice in the finish.

Elena Walch Pinot Grigio, Alto Adige, Italy 2017 38 Pinot Grigio with a backbone! Ripe orchard fruits with a dusting of white pepper and sage, it has minerality and a delicate salinity. Sings with seafood or sunshine.

Vermentino di Gallura, Branu, Vigne Surrau, Sardinia, Italy 2018 44 Vigne Surrau practices a traditional philosophy with a modern innovative approach to winemaking- in this case, the grapes are partially dried before . The result is a wine that has an intense aroma with fruity, mineral notes, long and persistent, rich on the palate. A proper Italian food wine.

Louro do Bolo, Godello, Valdeorres, Rafael Palacios, Valdeorras, Spain 2017 50 Rafael Palacios is often referred to as the best white winemaker in Spain. This is his “entry” Godello, but there is nothing simple about it. The nose is full of peach, crunchy pear and soft minerality, while the palate is taut and saline. There’s a citrus and mineral intensity, with real palate weight which creates a textured mouth-feel.

“Erse”, Etna Bianco, Tenuta di Fessina, Sicily, Italy 2017 50 Up on the side of the Etna (the still active volcano), around 1km high, the at Fessina craft fascinating wines- the Bianco is made up of 90% Carricante with 10% Minnella- not everyday grape varieties. Herbs, white flowers and lemon peel on the nose, the palate is flinty, sapid and herbaceous with a saline finish. A really outstanding Sicilian white.

Eva Fricke Riesling, Rheingau, Germany 2016 (Vegan) 50 A bone-dry (Trocken), mouthwatering Riesling, bursting with tart citrus fruit and supported by a nice stony mineral edge for good measure. The wine's medium-bodied palate gains strength and then lingers with a huge, penetrating finish of minerals and grapefruit.

Bodegas Lacus Rioja Blanco Inedito, Rioja, Spain 2016 60 100% Garnacha Blanco, this oaked white rioja is complex and incredibly interesting – coconut, banana and papaya with an underlying smokiness and sherry-like oxidation make this a wonderful pairing to cheese, charcuterie and lobster – a for those seeking the unusual.

Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese,̈ JJ Prum, Mosel, Germany, 2012 75 Manfred Prüm runs one of the Mosel’s, if not the whole of Germany’s, most revered and respected Estates. It is also amongst the most enigmatic as no-one has yet made it down to his mysterious cellars. This wine from the Himmelreich of Graacher is unashamedly classic and exciting. An amazing example of the world’s most exciting white grape variety.

Querciabella “Batàr” – Tuscany, Italy 2015 (Biodynamic, Vegan) 145 Described as the “White Sassicaia”, vines from Bâtard-Montrachet it the heart of Burgundian Grand Crus have been cultivated organically in Tuscany and then are blended half and half with Pinot Bianco – made as white Burgundy it sees plenty of oak and creating a rich, creamy, full bodied expression of Chardonnay with sweet spice, luscious fruit and opulence. Think of the best aspects of Chassagne and Puligny with a dash of Tuscan sunshine.

Marras , Swartland, South Africa 2018 26 Piekenierskloof is the wild mountain pass between Piketberg and Citrusdal, over the Olifants River Mountains here Martin “Marras” Lamprecht has a small vineyard of old un-irrigated Chenin Blanc vines, whose low yields give real length and breadth to this lovely Chenin.

Glenelly Unoaked Chardonnay, Stellenbosch, South Africa 2018 39 Bright citrus lead chardonnay with a fresh minerality – ripe pear, melon and papaya with soft white flowers and cloves in the background make this an interesting but by no means challenging summer tipple!

Ghost Corner Wild Ferment Oaked Sauvignon, Elim, South Africa 2016 (Natural) 48 Naturally fermented Sauvignon Blanc with 10 months barrel ageing creates a creamy, full bodied sauvignon with fleshy pear and quince and a smoky, flinty finish. A great food wine, keeping lots of palates happy and engaged.

A to Z Pinot Gris, Oregon, USA 2016 50 Precisely layered flavours of apple, pear and white melon comprise the palate, with a gentle touch of spice. Off-dry, deep complexity for fans of the wines of Alsace but wanting something a little more dynamic.

Blank Bottle Moment of Silence, Western Cape, South Africa 2018 (Vegan) 58 Pieter Walser defines the phrase “maverick winemaker” producing quirky but entirely relatable wines from unusual blends of anything – often unusual grapes! This is a light and pretty mix of Chenin Blanc, and Viognier – fleshy pears, stoney minerality and acai honey whilst remaining dry.

Blank Bottle Kortpad Kaaptoe, Western Cape, South Africa 2018 (Vegan) 66 Absolutely rock star packaging for one of the coolest and most interesting wines we’ve tried! The grape, Fernao Pires, is Portuguese by origin and has produced a richly spiced, exotic and full wine – think Gewürztraminer but nowhere near as sweet.

Dry Riesling, Prophet’s Rock, Central Otago, New Zealand 2015 70 One of New Zealand’s most exciting producers, creating premium, artisan wines in Central Otago, with winemaker Paul Pujol at the helm. White gold in colour, it displays floral and citrus aromas and flavours with a strong underlying minerality. These are echoed on the concentrated, crisp and lingering palate. The freshness and aromatics make this a great food wine. The fantastic acid structure and concentration mean that this wine will also reward careful cellaring over the next 5-10 years from vintage.

Red Claw Chardonnay, Mornington Peninsula, Australia 2017 (Vegan) 72 Beautifully balanced with middling levels of oak – this offers the precision of Cru level Chablis, with the familiar tropical edge of new world Chardonnay and just enough oak to give it presence but not become weighty.

Cloudy Bay Sauvignon, Marlborough, New Zealand 2018 75 THE leading example of the distinctively bright, zesty and floral characteristics of Kiwi Sauvignon. Pure, intense and crisp – this really does impress, perfectly refreshing for summers afternoon and a dream with seafood and shellfish.

One of the biggest expressions of the grape around, but perfectly balanced.

Monte Bello Chardonnay, Ridge, Santa Cruz, California, USA 2003 175 Ridge was founded in 1959, and since 1964 the philosophy has been that of “hands off” winemaking- allowing vines to develop in a non-intrusive way. The vines are dry-farmed so as to force them to work hard and develop greater characteristics. The Montebello is the flagship- an awesome chardonnay, with a great complexity. A legendary wine.

Red Wines France Les Nuages Pinot Noir, Touraine, Loire 2018 25 Light, fresh and easy drinking summertime pinot – plenty of fruit, a little smoke and spice but very rewarding and a lot of wine for the money!

Le Paradou Grenache, Château Pesquie, Southern Rhonê 2017 28 The Le Paradou label is a joint venture between the Ventoux's Château Pesquie Chaudiere family and importer Eric Solomon. Deep ruby coloured, with awesome notes of , pepper, and dark fruits, this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, no hard edges and a great finish. It sells for a song and way over-delivers.

Coteŝ du Rhonê Rouge, Reserve,́ La , Southern Rhonê 2016 36 Produced by the legendary Perrin family (Château Beaucastel). An uncompromising work ethic in the vineyard and the utmost respect for fruit characteristic result in particularly expressive wines that allow the terrior to shine. Intense aromas of red fruits, black cherry, peppermint and vanilla. Full bodied with warm fruits and spices, firm and fresh acidity. Well-structured with layers of flavour and rich, long finish.

Fleurie, Domaine Gry Sablon, Beaujolais 2017 36 Dominique Morel makes wines that are vibrant, fruit-driven with good colour and succulent mouthfeel. The Fleurie is a gentle and aromatic wine, with ripe red cherry fruit and a silky finish.

Château Labadie, Cru Bourgeois, Medoc, Bordeaux 2014 40 Château Labadie was classed as a Cru Bourgeois in the 1932 classification and again in the 2003 revision. The soil is a combination of clay/limestone, highly suited to the Merlot grape, and gravel, on which is planted. The estate owns 40 hectares of vines, producing 2400 hectolitres each year from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45%Merlot and 5%.

Carra Château Lascaux Pic St. Loup, Languedoc 2017 42 Jean-Benoît is passionate about supporting the richness and diversity of this ecosystem, and the conversion to biodynamic and was a logical progression for the future of the vineyards and expression in the wines – Provençal herbs, black olive and earthy fruit makes this an interesting change from Southern Rhône blends.

Morgon, Côte du Py, Jean-Marc Burgaud, Beaujolais 2017 48 Jean-Marc’s vines at the top of the Côte du Py suffered from hail on May 19th, so his mid-slope south- facing vines –which, he says, are most expressive of the slope’s famous blue granite –had more of a say than usual in the final blend. While this has a hugely attractive bouquet of berry fruit and flowers, it’s the intense mineral character of the palate that makes a real impression. Expect mouth-watering acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins.

Bourgogne Rouge, Domaine Taupenet-Merme, Burgundy 2012 50 Romain Taupenot continues to oversee the inexorable climb of this fantastic domain, now indisputably in the Premier League. With an exciting array of vineyards, Romain crafts wines of structure, definition, authenticity and complexity, and the wines are high class examples of their appellation. Romain's really rather full and powerful Pinot Noir would work well with strong-flavoured meats such as braised or roasted pheasant, brie or a rib steak. Maranges, David Moreau, Burgundy 2017 55 David Moreau took over his grandfather's vines in 2009 after spending time working for two of the REALLY prestigious names of Pinot -Domaine Romanée-Conti and Neudorf. So, it's safe to say he knows a thing or two about what great Pinot should taste like. And his wines are full of the same rich, velvety style that DRC are known for, without quite the same price-tag! Well worth a try, as for this price, we think this Burgundy is hard to beat.

Crozes Hermitage “Les Jalets”, Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Northern Rhonê 2016 60 A deliciously fruity, vibrant northern Rhône syrah from one of the region’s great names, Jaboulet. Much of the fruit comes from their vines at the renowned Domaine de Thalabert, and in this very ripe year the generous black-fruit flavour and soft tannins are already delivering real pleasure.

Gigondas ‘Terre des Aînes,́ Montirius, Southern Rhonê 2016 (Biodynamic) 65 A highly successful marriage of two Rhône varieties, Grenache and Mouvedre; half of the vines were planted in 1925. The wine which results is a stunner –distinguished, sophisticated and intricate.

Château Maison Blanche, Montagne-St. Emilion, Bordeaux 2014 (Vegan) 65 Organic blend of Merlot and Cabernet France – distinctive St. Emilion purity of fruit and delicate balance of oak giving a violet/peony decoration over the ripe cassis and pepper notes. Absolutely classic.

Château Peyrabon Cru Bourgeois, Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux 2005 72 Vibrant aroma of ripe fruit, beautifully balanced and starting to display real grown up characteristics of leather and tobacco with a solid core of jammy dark fruits. Well balanced, with lots of life left in!

Vieux-Telegraphe “Piedlong” Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône, France 2013 110 This blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre from 70 and 50-year-old vines respectively, is completely unfiltered and has punnets of fruit, rich meatiness and peppery spice – the full-bodied comforting signature jewel in the southern Rhône crown.

Château Gloria, St Julien, Bordeaux 2010 120 This is an outstanding Saint Julien from an estate that has produced a clutch of high performing wines in recent years This wine leaps out of the glass: blackberry, boysenberry, cedar and graphite aromas that are pure and beautifully defined.

Roche de Bellene Santenay 1er Cru “Beaurepaire”, Beaune, Burgundy 1998 133 In the very south of the Côte de Beaune from rich clay and limestone soils comes this beautifully aged, but regardless, vibrant Pinot Noir – dried red fruits, earthy Sous Bois characteristics that would be expected and still a wonderfully vibrant acidity. Light but powerful.

Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin “La Justice”, Côte de Nuits, Burgundy 2017 145 Well-established and respected Domaine, renowned for low yielding vines giving a focused purity of fruit. Generous but incredibly well integrated oak, with luscious dark fruit, spice and plush texture – ferrous, earthy and very forward, it is an absolute delight to .

Pauillac de Château Latour, Pauillac, Bordeaux 2011 (Biodynamic) 150 From the second the cork is pulled, this wine billows out waves of cassis, plum, espresso, cedar and Cuban cigars – picked from the same property that blesses the 1st growth Château Latour, this wine carries all the characteristics one would hope from a wine 10 times the price. Slight variation of age of vines and the amount of new oak the wine is exposed to makes it ready to drink a little sooner and what a treat it is.

Joseph Drouhin Beaune de Mouche 1er Cru, Burgundy 2014 190 Beautiful Beaune red of extraordinary quality, and classically feminine compared to the bolder reds of the Côte-de-Nuits such as Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-St-Georges. Morello cherry, raspberry and blackberry with gentle oaking, giving sweet smoke and tobacco.

Château Siran, Margaux, Bordeaux, France 1989 Magnum 200 1996 Double Mag. 350 1983 Jeroboam 590 Beautiful Cabernet-lead blends from the Left Bank, these vintages are wonderful – the 1989 displaying mulled fruits and spice, forest floor, black olive, truffle, cigar box but still with an incredible freshness and acidity – by no means tired, and plenty of life left yet. The 1983 is ready to drink, with all of the above but on a lighter frame with whispers of Tawny port. 1996 has swagger, bold and forward – drinking exceptionally well.

Château Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France 1990 890 Sublime. Opulent. Deep inky appearance with very fine brick red reflections – punnets of cassis leap out of the glass with feint cigar smoke, graphite and aged leather. Whilst remaining refined, it has a rich mouthfeel with fleshy fruit harmoniously balanced with fresh acidity and effortlessly integrated . An absolute sensation to drink.

Il Folle Nero d’Avola, Sicily, Italy 2018 22 The name ‘Il Folle’ means ‘the mad one’ – wild, gregarious and full of sun-drenched Sicilian personality. The wine embodies the best of the Sicilian landscape and warm southern character resulting in wines brimming with flavour and freshness.

Volpi Rosso, Tortoni, Italy NV 25 Easy drinking light red blend from Cesanese and Sangoivese grapes – fresh red fruits and a peppery spice finish.

Pago de Valdoneje Mencia Bierzo, Spain 2017 32 From the Mencia grape, this medium-full bodied red from the same walk of life as Rioja with bags of fruit and spice for red meats and cheese.

Familia Torres “Altos Ibéricos” Crianza, Rioja, Spain 2014 (Vegan) 32 Fruity with 16 months oak giving cherry and spiced plum notes and a beautiful smooth finish. Hints of green peppercorn and smoke, very easy drinking.

Barbera, Bonelli, dei , Emilia Romagna, Italy 2018 (Vegan) 34 Light, fresh, juicy and vibrant dry red from North East Italy – full of character with rustic charm as you would find in a little trattoria on holiday.

Volpare, La Giaretta, DOC, Italy 2017 36 La Giaretta have a solid reputation for making some outstanding wines including . A well- balanced and refined wine, heaps of dark cherry and black fruits with a bit of spice. It has a bright ruby red colour and pleasant scents of cherry.

DouRosa Tinto, Qunta de la Rosa, Douro, 2016 36 La Rosa have produced outstanding quality ports for many years, with some of their vineyards pre- dating the first world war. Since the 1990’s, the Berquist family has turned the quinta’s potential to table wines as well- with excellent results. This wine shows dark berry fruit, cherries and plums with underlying herbaceous aromas, without any of the heaviness associated with Douro wines.

Cannonau di Sardegna, Vigne Surrau, Sardinia, 2017 40 This is Surrau’s entry level Cannonau, its simplest expression of the grape from 100% estate Cannonau grapes grown on soils of decomposed granite mixed with sand. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel, after which the wine is aged in stainless steel and cement tanks. Elegance is the goal here, and though the wine clocks in at 14% alcohol, it’s barely noticeable. Think of it as Sardinian Grenache.

Langhe , Trediberri, , Piedmont Italy 2018 45 A great wine from the Oberto family- this comes from one of the Langhe’s top vineyards. They follow a low impact, organic approach to viticulture, while the wines are made traditionally with extended macerations & large oak ageing. The tannins and fruit are layered with cherry fruit, with floral notes and minerals lingering on the finish.

Chianti Classico, Quercia al Poggio, Italy 2016 46 The Quercia al Poggio estate is situated in the heart of the Classico district at an altitude of around 400 metres. A very silky and refined red with cedar, mushroom and dried cherry character. Fine tannins and a fresh finish of lively acidity.

Boina, Portugal Boutique Winery, Douro, Portugal 2016 46 Bright plum, black cherry and berry – very juicy! Violets and light spicing support this supple and rich wine, not quite a fruit bomb, but certainly jammy and refreshing in a grown-up way!

Pétalos, Descendientes de J Palacios, Bierzo, Spain 2017 48 Pétalos is produced from 60-year-old vines and is therefore an intensely concentrated wine. Deep ruby in colour, its nose displays generous, but not overripe, notes of red and black fruits, lifted by hints of violet and wild herbs. There is a minerality and hint of graphite which creates a velvet-like finish

La Rioja Alta “Vina Alberdi” Reserva, Rioja, Spain 2013 57 2011 Magnum 122 With less oak on it than our other offerings from Rioja, this bottle has a much more fruit lead expression, with background notes of toasted coconut, vanilla and sweet cherry it is very easy drinking and a proper crowd pleaser.

Rosso di Montalcino, Mastrojanni, Tuscany, Italy 2016 60 Mastrojanni is a historic winery of Castelnuovo Abate. A sleek, fragrant melding power and finesse- this has been a Mastrojanni signature since the 1970’s. A good Rosso di Montalcino such as this one, with its lively freshness underwritten by full ripeness, gives an inkling of the majesty of a fine Brunello but delivers it all wrapped up and ready to go.

Le Volte dell’Ornellaia, Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy 2016 70 Magnum 129 From the best vintage of the past 15 years, a Merlot-led blend of Bordeaux from super-Tuscan heavy weight Ornellaia is a pure expression of the outstanding fruit grown in Bolgheri. Dark fruits, smoke and spice with a comforting, familiar Bordeaux backbone.

Monte Santoccio Valpolicella Classico Superiore, Veneto, Italy 2016 (Vegan) 79 Seriously seductive, velvety and rich – morello cherry, earthy spice and perfectly integrated tannins is the prime example of why this style of wine is so popular.

Tenuta dei Sette Cieli “Indaco” IGT, Tuscany, Italy 2014 (Vegan) 100 From the Italian for “Indigo” comes the inky super-Tuscan equal parts blend of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. 18 months in French oak give this wine the best of both Bordeaux and Tuscan traits – spicy, structured and silk smooth whilst retaining opulence and integrity.

Vega Sicilia “Alion”, , Spain 2014 110 are the Rolls Royce of Spanish winemaking – opulent and generous with a pitch perfect balance between fruit and oak, it is a real treat to enjoy. Morello cherry, raspberry, dark chocolate, tobacco and silky tannins make a real statement.

Giacoma Fennochio Barolo, Piemonte, Italy 2014 118 Magnum 265 We have been to visit Claudio (the late Giacoma’s eldest son) at his vineyard and had the privilege to taste this wine in barrel before it was released, which is why it is here on the list! We love him because unlike some of the big names in the region, he is the man on his hands and knees all year round tending to his vines and picking the fruit rather than leaving it to those he may not trust. Whilst maintaining all the elegant masculinity of what is expected of Barolo, this has a distinctive burnt orange style acidity from the iron rich soil, dried rose and smoky tar-like depth.

La Rioja Alta 904 Gran Reserva, Rioja, Spain 2010 155 Considered one of the greatest vintages of this century, it is everything one could wish for in a Gran Reserva Rioja – cherries, vanilla, tobacco, spice with luxurious texture and effortlessly integrated tannins. Screams out for rib of beef and an hour in a if possible.

Secateurs Cinsault blend, Adi Badenhorst, Swartland, SA 2018 (Vegan) 34 A mix of all things Southern Rhone – Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvedre – this big spicy number has plenty of grip and spice without being too heavy. Earthy perfume and bright red fruits on the nose, perfect with red meat.

Alphabetical Cabernet/Merlot/Shiraz, Alphabetical Wines, Western Cape, SA 2018 34 A punchy, lively blend of Bordeaux varietals with Shiraz – fruity and spicy with notes of smoke and scorched earth. Both savoury and fruity this pleases on its own accord, or with red meats and cheese.

Pasarisa Patagonia Merlot, Mendoza, Argentina 2016 38 Laura Catena, torchbearer for Argentina and fourth generation of the Catena family, has created the new range of Pasarisa wines, showcasing some of the exciting regions in Argentina. From Salta, in the north of the country, surrounded by mountains and with a high altitude. Ripe cherries, strawberries, spices and flowers. The plate is medium-bodied with crisp red fruit.

Chakana Estate “Nuna” Malbec – Mendoza, Argentina 2018 (Vegan) 37 Super ripe and full-bodied Malbec from the heart of Mendoza – plums, mulled fruit, coffee this is proper warming winter red with plenty of tannins to pair a steak from the grill.

Neudorf “Tom’s Block” Pinot Noir, Nelson, New Zealand 2017 65 Dry farming (no artificial irrigation) means this Pinot really speaks of where it is from and is a great fingerprint for the vintage and grower, Warm summers and cool autumn nights lead to this richly textured, but intense fruit driven delight.

Thief in the Night, Savage Wines, Western Cape, SA 2017 (Vegan) 65 The wine shows a real individuality and personality with bright fragrant violet perfume, sappy spicy peppery raspberry and redcurrant confit complexity, hints of sun raisined cranberries, cured bresaola, boiled raspberry sweets and wild strawberry.

Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir, Santa Maria, California USA 2017 68 Located at the foot of one of California’s most rated vineyards, Bien Nacido in the Santa Maria Valley, one of the finest sites in California, ideal for the production of the refined, Burgundian style of Pinot Noir. Bon Climat hallmark is the intense fragrance of the Pinots. Floral as well. Masses of ripe, soft red fruit on the palate, think redcurrants, cranberries, et al. Very supple tannins and a fine boned structure.

Day , Failla Wines, Sonoma County, California, USA 2016 75 This Zinfandel offers a savoury nose of dried raspberry, blueberry compote, herbs, peppercorn, purple flower potpourri and crushed stone. It has an elegant mouthfeel complete with subtle notes of sweet red cherry, tobacco, brown butter and bramble berry cobbler.

El Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Cabernet Franc, Mendoza, Argentina 2012 150 A big South American nod to Pomerol style wine making, but rather than the elegance one would except from Bordeaux this has all the wonders of world leading Malbec propping up the famous inspiration. Bell pepper, cassis and smoky earth.

Shafer TD-9, Stag’s Leap, Napa, USA 2016 163 “One of the world’s greatest ” deems Robert Parker, this blend of Merlot, Cabernet and Malbec is joyously plush with generous fruit and leaps out of the glass – whilst still young, benefits from being Merlot lead where the fruit takes centre stage with damsons, plums and a background hint of five spice.

Torbreck “The Pict” Mataro, Barossa Valley, Australia 2006 178 Named after a late Iron age tribe from Scotland, this Mataro (Mourvedre in France) was traditionally a workhorse grape for fortified wines in Bandol, but gives a super-rich, earth deep red with port like characteristics with wildflowers and hard herbs such as oregano and thyme – super savoury and beautifully rounded.

Robert Sinskey SLD Estate Caberent Sauvignon, Napa, USA 2010 (Biodynamic) 180 Classic Napa Cabernet profile – punnets of dark fruits, violets, herbal and smoky spice. Rich, opulent and powerful. 100% biodynamic vineyard since 1991, with a huge focus on environmental awareness – generating 75% of their own solar energy and reusing oil to make biodiesel to power their machinery.

Torbreck “Descendant” Shiraz/Viognier, Barossa Valley, Australia 2007 265 Adopting the methods found in the Northern Rhône in softening some of the weighty Côte-Rotie Syrah by adding Viognier, Shiraz is crushed straight onto Viognier and then co-fermented. Glorious rich perfume of dark fruits, thyme, roasted red meat and earth may this an absolute gem from a treasured producer.

Torbreck “The Factor” Shiraz, Barossa Valley, Australia 2004 280 Most of the world’s vines were destroyed by an outbreak of in the 1800s, however South Australia’s quarantine policy meant that the vines planted in the 1880s are still viable today – these Shiraz vines are some of the oldest in the world, and draw depth and minerality far deeper than any others known to man – a truly complex and luscious wine, for the connoisseur and ultimate Shiraz indulgence.

Sweet, Fortified & Port

Uroulat Jurançon, Charles Hours, Roussillon, France 2016 Glass 5 30 The Clos Uroulat Jurançon is 100% Petit Manseng, harvested in November, and is thus a late- style. Elegant and grand, with exotic flavours of acacia, lots of minerals, quince and pineapple supported by a fine underlying acidity.

Fondo Antica Baccadoro Passito, Sicily NV Glass 7 40 The hills above Trapani in north-western Sicily are home to the beautiful Fondo Antico vineyards. A delicious, sweet combination of almonds, cookies, dried figs and candied oranges. Intense, but with great freshness.

Domaine de La Rectorie Banyuls Cuvée Leon Parce, Rousillon, France 2016 50 Soaking Grenache in 96% alcohol for three weeks and using the result to fortify a late harvest Grenache sweet wine makes something quite special. Punnets of dark fruits, Christmas pudding, anise and dark chocolate – giving a much bigger punch that Port to befriend cheese and chocolate alike.

Quinta De La Rosa LBV, Portugal 2014 Glass 6.5 65 A blend of the three traditional varietals, made in a slightly more elegant, feminine style with lots of vibrancy and a gentle structure. Great lift and refinement.

Château Climens, Barsac, Bordeaux, France 2005 80 Lovely golden shine with plenty of dried fruits. Spicy, mineral, apricot, grapefruit. Very fine, elegant acid provide perfect balance to the high sugar. No sweet aftertaste, but fruits and minerality.

Royal Tokaji Gold Label Aszu 6 Puttonyos, Hungary 2013 Glass 20 100 Lovely golden shine with plenty of dried fruits. Spicy, mineral, apricot, grapefruit. Very fine, elegant acid provide perfect balance to the high sugar. No sweet aftertaste, but fruits and minerality with a subtle smoky edge.

Chateau d’Yquem, Barsac, Bordeaux, France 1996 Glass 50 175 Considered by most to be the finest on the planet, this is a symphony of toasted nuts, marmalade, vanilla, cream and honeysuckle. Incredible purity and rich texture, with some interesting notes of coconut and tonka bean after a few minutes in the glass.

Rutte 100% Grain – Dordrecht, Holland 8 Since 1872, the Rutte Distillery has been making gins, genevers and in Dordrecht, using traditional methods and only the very best ingredients. The first distillery in Holland to be certified with the organic label.

Beluga Noble – Mariinsk Distillery, Siberia 12 Beluga has become a huge success story since first pitching up on these shores in 2009. Beluga is made, unusually, with barley malt spirit, and is very lightly flavoured with honey and extracts of oat and milk thistle.

Angostura No.1 16-Year-Old 18 Hailing from Trinidad’s only distillery, a second edition in Angostura’s No.1 Cask Collection is a blend of rums aged initially for 10 years, which are then finished for a further six in refill french casks. Fruity with fig and raison with a nutty overtone.

Longrow Peated 11 A no-age-statement release from Longrow. One of the three distilled at Springbank distillery, Longrow is generally peaty in comparison to its siblings. A well-balanced with some slightly medicinal notes. Kilkerran 8 13 The 2018 edition of Kilkerran’s small batch 8-year-old cask-strength whisky. It’s matured in bourbon casks and bottled without chill-filtration to keep as much of the whisky’s character intact. It’s a rich and gently smoky dram, with balanced sweetness and fruit.

Highland

Glengoyne Cask Strength 13 The first ever expression in the series that has been 100% matured in sherry oak casks. Bottled non-chill filtered and its natural strength of 59.8%, GCS Batch No. 6 has been created from a combination of European oak sherry casks, American oak sherry butts and refill sherry butts. Intense flavour of demerara sugar and gooseberry. Tomatin 14 13 Tomatin’s 14-Year-Old has been finished in tawny-port pipes, which adds notes of extra fruitiness, especially red fruits to the classic Highland notes of toffee and honey.

Ledaig 18 Sherry Cask Finish 17 The third batch of Ledaig 18-Year-Old, the peated malt from Tobermory distillery on the Isle of Mull. Finished in sherry casks, this is rich and fruity with notes of smoke and a maritime character. Port Askaig 8 11 The youngest age-statement release in the Port Askaig range of single malts from undisclosed Islay distilleries, this eight-year-old whisky is warming and smoky with notes of limestone, liquorice and dark peat. Laphroaig QRT Cask 8 A vibrant young Laphroaig whose maturation has been speeded up by ageing in quarter casks. This shows soft sweetness and a velvety feel when first tasted, then the intense peatiness so unique to Laphroaig comes bursting through.

Lowland

Ailsa Bay 13 Ailsa Bay is unusual in a number of respects. Not only does it display the PPM (Phenol Parts per Million) of the actual whisky on the bottle, but it also provides a figure for SPPM; Sweet Parts Per Million. Rich and earthy backbone, with sweet liquorice and touches of tar. Auchentoshan 12 7 This Auchentoshan 12-year-old expression replaced the old 10-year-old when the range was totally revamped. Elegant and refined, with notes of vanilla and almonds.

Glenrothes 12 11 A Glenrothes 12-Year-Old in classic style; fruity and sweet. Aged solely in sherry-seasoned casks, this Speyside whisky has notes of vanilla, melon, banana and cinnamon. Macallan 15 Triple Cask 36 Macallan 15yo Fine Oak is matured in a combination of bourbon & sherry oak casks. Probably the pick of the (Fine Oak) bunch. Takes time to open but worth the wait. Intense rich chocolate with hints orange and raisins.

Van Burnt Bourbon – Brooklyn, New York 12 A deliberate divergence from tradition, this is a big, bold bourbon built to satisfy your sweet tooth. Chocolate, butterscotch and hints of banana simmer down to a finish sprinkled with coffee, nuts and lashings of maple syrup. It’s a sundae in a whiskey glass.

Oxford Pure Rye Spirit – Oxford Artisan Distillery, Oxfordshire 10 Intoxicating aroma of sandalwood, vanilla and praline. On the palate, the delicate flavour of cinnamon and tasted grain is followed by a finish of caramel and subtle spice.

Makers 46 – Loretto, Kentucky USA 10 The first new Maker’s Mark recipe for at least 50 years, Maker’s 46 is named for the number of different wood ‘recipes’ they tried before getting it right. Bottled at 47% it is matured in part in barrels containing a ladder of toasted new French oak barrel staves to give more spice and vanilla.

Kavalan Classic Single Malt – Yilan County, Taiwan 12 The flagship single malt from Taiwan’s Kavalan. Only operating since 2005 they have wowed the world with their young but full flavoured whisky, concentrating on their signature flavours of tropical fruit.
