BRAZILIAN PERCUSSION SUMMER CAMP 2017 RCNJ

SCHEDULE:

Day 1: - of Blocos Afros:

Samba-reggae fuses samba and Afro-Caribbean music such as reggae, a political music already popular in . In the late 1970s, the black Carnival groups (blocos afros) developed a new sound, more contemporary and energetic than ijexá that remains immensely popular throughout Brazil.

Introduction of instruments of samba-reggae: surdo, tarol(snare), repique Introduction to director communication Fundamentals of playing each instrument Some traditional call and responses 1-2 rhythms of samba-reggae Some historical and cultural background of Salvador, Brazil, samba-reggae, blocos afros

Day 2: Ijexá and Avaninha, from Candomblé to Carnival:

These traditional Candomblé rhythms are adapted for Carnival procession. The agogô two-toned bell is played to create the syncopated rhythms similar to West African and Caribbean versions.

Day 3: Capoeira - music and movement:

Capoeira is exuberant martial art that features high energy rhythms, song, clapping and exciting acrobatic movements. We will practice the music and some basic moves.

These enchanting rhythms fuel Brazil’s two most popular and contagious dances. Variations of samba’s is used in Carnival parading groups, which can be heard in Brazil’s major cities. This is a rhythm used in forró dance music from Northeastern Brazil. The name derives from the schottische, a popular nineteenth-century couple dance from Bohemia that be-came popular in the Americas.

Day 5: Maracatú and Ramapo Summer Funk:

Maracatú is a powerful performance genre found in northeastern state of Pernambuco, Brazil that give players nice opportunities for improvisation. Amarildo composed this groovy funk rhythm during a workshop with Upward Bound students at Ramapo one summer and the Brazilian Percussion Ensemble has been playing it ever since. We know you are going to love it!
