Of Civic Arts Education Provides Summer, Winter, and Spring Art Camps for Youth, Ages 5-14

Camp Community Arts (CCA) of Civic Arts Education provides Summer, Winter, and Spring art camps for youth, ages 5-14. CCA offers hands-on arts learning, field trips, and swimming in a supportive community . Our goal? To help young people create, build relationships, and express themselves.

Summer 2016

CCA’s summer youth art Camps include a variety of classes with talented teaching artists, plus recreational swim days and creative nature-inspired field trips to regional parks, museums, botanical gardens, and more.

Travel around the world at this summer’s art Camps, which include – Brazilian Drumming, Brazilian Dance, Italian Theater, African Drumming and Dance, Philippine Dance, Japanese Anime & – and much more!

VISUAL ARTS

Drawing / Anime / Manga

Teaching Artist: Warren Paylado

Course Overview:

Camp 1- Animal Drawing

Come join us this summer and learn basic art techniques in drawing animals. We explore the wonderful world of four legged creatures and the like through step-by-step instruction. Art students gain the skill and confidence to move through several species on earth, wind and sea. You provide the passion to draw, we'll do the rest.

Camp 2 - Creature/ Monster Drawing

Don't be scared—there’s nothing crawling from under the desks but our imaginations and creativity. This camp will allow for eager artists to learn basic fundamentals in drawing anything from Dragons, Griffins, Zombies, popular culture movie Creatures, etc. The foundation is learning how to draw people and animals through Gesture, Anatomy and Technique (G.C.A.T). Let's unfold a creepy art world together in this fun and not so scary camp!

Camp 3 - Beginning Anime/ Manga

Are you interested in Japanese anime/manga cartooning? Learn step by step to draw Japanese style cartooning through basic techniques and instruction. The camp will allow students to explore basic fundamentals in drawing popular Anime characters, elements of cartooning, studying film and art projects. The goal is to have fun drawing and gain new art skills through the popular culture of Japanese style cartooning.

Camp 4 - Intermediate Manga

Continue your journey into the Japanese art of anime/manga by taking your characters and stories to the next level. This class will focus on elements of graphic design, and creature development, basic anatomy, poses, expressive and gestural drawing through Gesture, Construction, Anatomy & Technique ( GCAT) storyboarding, game development and more. This class is for students that took the beginning Anime/ Manga class and who are at an intermediate/ advanced level with strong drawing and composition skills.

Painting

Teaching Artist: Brittany Zagoria

Classes offered to Ages 5-7; 8-10; 11-14

Course overview:

Camp 1: Intro to Painting: Watercolor

Students are taught watercolor techniques such as wet on wet, dry brush, scrubbing, layering, and controlled wash through a variety of painting projects. They will work both from observation and photo references, completing a still life and animal portrait, among others. Students will learn about color theory, value, and composition through a variety of exercises and lectures, and learn a bit of art history by being introduced to many influential artists along the way!

Camp 2: Intro to Painting: Acrylic Painting

Students are introduced to the basics of acrylic painting; they will learn how to use mediums, glazing techniques, and creating layers through extended projects. They will work with pattern, texture, and on a variety of surfaces such as canvas, panel, and paper. We will be looking at artists throughout history to gain insight into different ways of painting, from realism to abstraction.

Camp 3: 3D Painting

Students will explore painting onto 3D surfaces. They will paint onto clay and textured materials to create a 3D painting and also design and paint their own pop-up book by the end.

Camp 4: Portrait Painting

Students will learn how to paint a portrait from scratch- creating a self-portrait and pet portrait. They will be taught how to draw each feature of the face- breaking it down into easy to understand shapes, and learn tricks on how to catch a specific person’s likeness. They will witness how different artists throughout history approached painting people, and by the end of class, choose to create a portrait in that style’s likeness.

Murals & Large Scale Narrative Painting

Course overview:

Camp 2: Pictures As Stories Images aren’t static: they tell us stories about places, people and eras. In this class, students will draw on both personal experience and to explore how setting, characters and compositional techniques can be used to create narrative pictures. By the end of the class, we will work together to tell a story through a series of related, collaborative paintings.

Camp 3: Collaborations! Producing artwork in collaboration with others is often a surprising, exciting and liberating experience. While we might give up some control over the outcome, we can discover a lot about our own artistic process, and what may be shared or unique about it. Over the course of this class, we will , experiment and learn together through a series of projects and games.

Camp 4: Arts Murals are an art form that is deeply rooted in place and community. Drawing on the local landscape around us, as well as students’ personal experiences, we will explore how we can make art that reflects its location in the world. Working together as we paint, we will create a collaborative mural that represents the shared values and aspirations of the class. DIGITAL ARTS

Digital Imaging with Illustrator

Course Overview:

Camp 1: Digital Arts - Mandala Creation with Illustrator

Explore the limitless possibilities of digital imaging by learning the basics of the Illustrator program in order to create your own eye-catching professional designs. We will begin with a run-through of the primary tools of illustrator, color theory, and simple shape manipulations. With these primary tools, we will be creating our own mandala, inspired by your imagination. We will start with a rough pencil sketch that will be scanned into the program and traced over using the tools we learn throughout the course to complete a beautiful design worthy of mom’s fridge or any professional art studio!

Camp 2: Digital Arts - Creation of a New World with Illustrator

Use your imagination and the tools and theories discussed in our last class to create your own world by using and learning a new media. We will revisit the tools taught in the first course, in addition to many more. We will learn line manipulation and the ability to incorporate other techniques while we dive into creating a landscape that will rely on your imagination and creativity. Be the ultimate architect in building a world you desire, filled with everything you love and enjoy.

Stop Motion Animation / Claymation

Camp 3: Digital Arts – Claymation: Bringing Clay to Life

Bring a character to life with stop-motion animation. During this week, you will be creating and designing your own character with clay. We will create a story for your character and practice how to create precise stop-motion animation. In this class, you will learn techniques used in films such as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Paranorman. The final product will be a video of your character fulfilling the path you have created for it.

Camp 4: Digital Arts - Claymation: Clay Character Animation and Story Creation

Delve deeper into the creation of clay figures and the development of a strong by learning more techniques for claymation. These techniques will enhance your ability to create a more detail-oriented story within stop-motion animation. Not only will we expand our storyboards, but we will also incorporate props for our characters to interact with. The end result will be a film reflective of your growing talents as an animator.

Garage Band Recording & Music Studio Basics

Teaching Artist: John Waller

Class offered during Camps 1, 2, 3, and 4

Classes offered to Ages 8-10; 11-14

Course Overview: Course Overview: We’ll learn basic sound recording techniques and production while we have fun developing audio projects using Garageband software. We will be doing voice overs, instrument recording with live percussion, keyboards, guitar and bass while we produce audio tracks using a mixer and add effects.

Makey Makey Kits – Electronic Music Studio Teaching Artist: Alex Jacobius

Course Overview: Explore music this summer! Using Makey Makey Kits, we'll learn how to turn drawings, household objects, and even food into electronic musical instruments. Campers will be introduced to the fundamentals of music notation, pitch, rhythm, harmony, improvisation, and composition. MIXED MEDIA ARTS

Sculpture

Teaching Artist: Heloise Levy

Offered during Camps 1, 2, and 3

Classes offered to Ages 5-7; 8-10; 11-14

Course overview: In this class students will create different types of 2D and 3D sculpture using a range of materials and tools. Students will also be introduced to a variety of artists who produce all types of sculpture. Materials and tools include (but are not limited to) clay, wire, plaster strips, wood, metal and cloth, glue guns, stitching needles, acrylic paint and scissors. Bring your imagination, creativity and free hands.

Camp 1: Exploring Sculpture

Learn about different types of sculpture. Create your own sculpture pieces using a variety of materials. Start with soft sculpture using burlap, sewing, and gluing found objects. Make a refill using a sheet of metal and engraving tools. Finally, using clay, form a 3D piece of a sculpture. At the same time, learn about some famous artists who used the same materials to create famous pieces of sculpture.

Camp 2: Creative Sculpture

Continue exploring the world of sculpture. Put together an assemblage in a box with favorite objects or found materials. Create a mobile using an assortment of objects emphasizing color and shape. Create a 3D piece using a coat hanger and wooden block. Learn about even more artists who have worked with sculpture.

Camp 3: Non-Traditional Sculpture

Explore reliefs using plaster strips as well as create different styles of 3D sculpture. Create your own sculpture piece using wire, wood, cloth, and paint.

Fiber Arts & Material Exploration

Teaching Artist: Alexandra Milukhin

Class offered during Camps 1, 2, 3, and 4

Classes offered to Ages 5-7; 8-10; 11-14

Course Overview: Enjoy the process of creating and making while exploring concepts of social, situational, and self-awareness. Referencing cloth and clothing from other cultures, we’ll imprint our own style into our custom made items. While some cultures use mud to dye clothes, we’ll use Kool-Aid. Our daily making will produce an abundance of handspun art- yarn and handmade art-cloth culminating in a grand project such as:

 A Bike Bag or Book Bag – Weave a bike bag using actual bicycle inner-tube string as yarn or cut and sew a bag with extra pockets and compartments. Lots of amazing fabrics and stuff to choose from!

 An altered outfit – Bring your t-shirts, jeans, and jackets. We’ll create surface designs with Kool-Aid coloring and patchwork-mending. Elaborating with applique and embroidery adds layers of color and detailing.

 A Rag Rug – An abundant assortment of yarns will be available but bring in your own worn-out clothes and we’ll integrate the torn strips into stripes!

 A soft sculpture – Cut and sew a unique Stuffed Animal – lions and tigers and bunnies and bears!

While having fun making and creating, we’ll also learn some skills like cutting and sewing, hand and machine stitching; art-yarn spinning, machine knitting, and loom weaving. Surface design techniques, such as coloring and stenciling as well as embroidery and applique will be explored.

CERAMICS / CLAY

Teaching Artist: Ida Thaler

Class offered during Camps 1, 2, 3, and 4

Classes offered to Ages 5-7; 8-10; 11-14

Course Overview: In this course campers will learn and develop their hand-building techniques through functional and decorative projects centered on plants, gardens, and environmental sustainability. Techniques will include but are not limited to: coils, slabs, pinch pots and sculptures, slipping & scoring, etching, glazing, image transfers and more. This course is great for campers with or without previous experience in ceramics – Projects will be tailored to suit campers’ individual skill levels and interests. At the end of each session, campers will have a collection of skills that they can continue to build on in the future, as well as a collection of pottery that will add a fun personal touch to both indoor and outdoor home spaces.

Each two-week session will include 2 of the following projects: pots, planters, garden creatures, toad homes, insect hotels, bee & butterfly watering stations, birdhouses, wind chimes, planter pockets, rain sticks, and ollas (irrigation pots).

PERFORMING ARTS

Theater and Performing Arts

Teaching Artist: Julia Dashe

Class offered during Camps 1, 2, 3, and 4

Classes offered to Ages 5-7; 8-10; 11-14

Course Overview:

Kooky , Magical Masks, and Puppets Palooza! An awesome for kids. Jump into a world of make believe and imagination as we bring the theatre alive through theatre arts, picture story, movement, voice, mask and puppets!

Classes will include basic theatre skills involving singing, creative movement, vocal and body warm ups, improvisation, character exploration, and storytelling—culminating in an ensemble performance at the end of the camp.

Camp 1: Creative Cantastoria Theatre!

In this workshop, campers will explore basic theater, as well as Cantastoria, a form of theatre using “painted picture stories” that are performed with singing, creative movement, and spoken word. We will play theatre games to build skills in creative movement, singing, improvisation, and the art of storytelling. We will also learn, rehearse and perform for friends and family at the end of the workshop.

Camp 2: Magical Masks and the Art of Storytelling!

In this workshop, campers will begin to dive into the imaginative world of creating characters through hands-on mask making activities and fun theatre games that will teach skills in voice, movement improvisation, and character development. On the final day, students will perform a play developed from the masks they've created themselves.

Camp 3: Puppets Palooza!

In this workshop, campers will create flat, two-dimensional stick puppets from cardboard- or hand puppets with papier mache heads, and learn the art of manipulating a puppet so that characters come alive. Campers will also create a simple puppet stage from which they will perform short play for friends and family at the end of the two weeks! Theatre games and fun interactive creative expression activities will be woven with the art- making times.

Camp 4: Putting it all together: A Cantastoria Cabaret!

In this workshop, campers will dive into the collaborative world of creating an original Cantastoria (“painted picture story”) together and perform their play at the end of the workshop. Through fun theatre games, story building exercises and artistic collaboration, our performers will present an original take on an art form that had its start in 6th Century . Philippine Dance

Course Overview:

Camp 1: Introduction to Philippine Fiesta Dances

World dance forms are living objects of cultural transmission. In this entry-level course, students will be immersed in fiesta dance traditions of the Philippines. Utilizing tactile and kinetic modes of learning, self-confidence and body coordination are hoped to be gained. Students will come to understand dance is cultural heritage, and ultimately through fiesta dances, celebrate our multicultural community.

Camp 2: Floras de las Filipinas: Flower Dances of the Philippines

A tropical country composed of more than 7,000 islands, the botanic array of the Philippines has been prime inspiration for the nation’s folk dances. Learning basic Philippine folk dance steps, we will practice teamwork to dance together as a group. Additional course goals include musicality, balance, and appreciation of dance cultures.

Camp 3: Graceful Philippine Butterfly Dances

The Philippines is home to more than 350 endemic species of butterflies. This dance course focuses on instilling grace, poise, and fine motor coordination. Moving through space and time with dainty props will be explored. Bring floaty, floral dance attire and come join us as we flutter through an introductory sampling of Philippine dance movement vocabulary.

Camp 4: Birds of the Philippines

In most cultures, the natural world directly inspires dance-making. This dance course will explore bird-themes in traditional Philippine dance. Agility, body alignment,

discipline, and musicality will be further developed, as well as a greater sense of character embodiment through exercises in self-movement discovery. Since dance is a living artifact and an expression of culture, it is hoped that students remain investigative and accepting of other dance genres.

Brazilian Dance and Latin American Dance

Teaching Artist: Samantha Lansman

Class offered during Camps 1, 2, and 3

Classes offered to Ages 8-10; 11-14

Course Overview:

Camp 1: Brazilian Dance and Song

This course will allow students to explore and compare both traditional and contemporary dance forms from . In the process of learning choreography, students will utilize skills in team building, spatial awareness and understanding of musical rhythms. Portuguese words and songs will be taught and students will have the opportunity to decorate their own costumes. Seeing as fun is a high priority on the list, time for various games will be added to each class as a way to relax and enjoy!

Camp 2: Latin American Dance

Students will enjoy learning different dance steps to a variety of different music such as salsa, , and hip hop. Daily classes will include question of the day, warm-up/stretching techniques, movement and song. Students will work together in combining choreography from steps learned in class or from previous knowledge. This course will show students how moving around and staying fit can be fun!

Camp 3: Maculele and Afro Brazilian Dance

The focus of this course will be in Maculele, which is an offshoot of Capoeira and incorporates two sticks. Because the use of sticks is a key component to this art form, students will use coordination when orchestrating the movements with partners, their musicality and a lot of energy! The historical significance will be discussed and example videos will be shown.

Course Overview:

Camp 1 Come and sing your heart out this summer! We'll explore the basic foundations of being a vocalist & singing your favorite musical pieces! Singers will have fun investigating & being introduced to various genres of music including pop, musical theater, folk and R&B. Daily activities will include solos, group numbers & duos. Daily fundamentals & activities will include: theater games/movement, breathing, vocal eases, and unique song choice.

Camp 2 The celebration of singing continues as we build on basic vocal techniques! We will continue investigating the vast world of music with our voices while constructing foundational habits. Vocal students will enjoy performing for one another via musical theater, pop & other individual song choices. Come and gain the skill to audition or perform while learning rehearsal technique via phonetics, breathing and various theater games!

Camp 4

Finding your own voice is a unique experience! The best part about singing is learning how to finally express your own unique story & sharing it! We will focus on audition & script technique to strengthen lyrical abilities and overall performance. Each student will have an opportunity to build their unique story telling abilities via monologues, songs and basic vocal warm up techniques. Group sharing is powerful. Get ready to share your songs with the world!

MUSIC – Instrumental

African Drumming – Dundun Dance & Drum

Classes offered to Ages 5-7; 8-10; 11-14 11

Course Overview:

Learn about the culture and art of West Africa while having fun, and enhancing musicality and self-confidence! Campers will learn the basics of the intricate and detailed polyrhythms from this region, as well as songs that have been passed down generation to generation. They will also learn traditional dance movements which are becoming more popular around the world in the form of dundun dance (pronounced “doon doon”), which combines the use of a larger drum, sticks, and some dance movements. Dundun dance is really the combination of drumming and dancing in one rhythmic art form.

Brazilian Drumming - Summer Samba in the Sun

Teaching Artist: John Waller

Classes offered to Ages 5-7; 8-10; 11-14

Course Overview: We start with the basics of Brazilian surdo, and many other sounds used in samba drumming. A fun musical experience awaits you. Emphasis is on introducing the basic rhythmic and beat patterns from Brazil that are used in the celebration. We will also learn basic conga technique and so much more.

Drumming and Percussion with Repurposed Materials

Class offered during Camps 1, 2, 3, and 4

Classes offered to Ages 5-7; 8-10; 11-14

Course Overview:

Camp 1: Intro to Rhythm and Percussion

Learn to drum this summer! Build and play various percussion instruments out of repurposed materials. Campers will also be introduced to musical concepts such as rhythmic modes, call-and-response techniques, as well as how to improvise on the instruments they construct.

Camp 2: Make and Learn to Play Your Own

While building their own drum set piece by piece out of repurposed materials, campers will introduced to fundamentals of music notation and basic drum beats. We will compose original pieces to play on our drum sets as a class and on our own. Campers will also gain experience performing as part of an ensemble.

Camp 3: Build and Play Pitched Percussion

Our musical journey will continue as we add some melody and harmony! We will learn to build and play various pitched percussion instruments out of repurposed materials. Campers will be introduced to the fundamentals of melodic and harmonic structures in music. We will also write and perform original compositions on the instruments that we construct.

Camp 4: Percussion Ensemble

Let's put it all together! Campers will explore the percussion ensemble's endless combinations of textures and timbers. We'll combine all of the instruments and musical techniques we've learned about this summer. Each camper will have the opportunity to write musical pieces, improvise, and support others as a member of a percussion ensemble.
