Urbino InterUrbino Low Entry Hybrid Urbino electric MetroStyle Trollino Tramino Family business, global market

Solaris Bus & Coach is a family company founded and owned by Solange and Krzysztof Olszewski. The company is a major European producer of city, intercity and special-purpose buses as well as low-floor trams. Since the start of production in 1996, thousands of vehicles have already left the factory in Bolechowo near Poznań. They are operated through Europe and boldly go beyond the old continent. The combination of the vision and experience of ’ owners with the enthusiasm of a young team resulted in perfect conditions to achieve strong successes. Despite its young age, Solaris has become one of the trendsetting companies in its industry. For many years, it has been the indisputable leader among the suppliers of city buses in as well as one of the largest suppliers of buses in .

Olszewski family

5 The history of the Solaris brand name

Before establishing what was then the first company building low-floor bu- ses in Poland in the mid-1990’s, Krzysztof Olszewski spent 14 years working for German bus manufacturer Neoplan, where he latterly managed the bus factory. He decided to use this vast experience in his home country and opened -based Neoplan Polska as an independent importer in 1994. In 1995, Poznań City Transport announced a tender for the supply of 122 low-floor city buses. One of the conditions was the location of the factory in the vicinity of the city. Krzysztof Olszewski won the contract for 72 of these buses and decided to set up a factory in Bolechowo. Production was launched on 22 March 1996. Three years later, the young company took one of its most important steps. With a group of Polish engineers and in collaboration with a design studio from Berlin, Krzysztof Olszewski designed the Solaris Urbino low-floor city bus from scratch. The Urbino launched in May 1999. In 2001, the company of Krzysztof and Solange Olszewski became fully independent and ceased to be affiliated with the Neoplan brand after this had been taken over by a competitor. The Olszewski family became the sole owner of their company, which changed its name to Solaris Bus & Coach.

6 Rapid and sustainable growth

From this point, the company’s dynamic growth accelerated further. The Urbino range of low-floor buses was extended to include Trollino trolleybuses. Today, Solaris is the largest manufacturer of trolleybuses in the European Union. The company also offers special buses such as mobile blood donation stations or models designed for airport operation. During 2006 IAA Commercial Vehicles exhibition in Hannover, Solaris presented Europe’s first city bus with volume-production hybrid technology, the Urbino 18 Hybrid. The company decided to apply the experience gained in the production of buses to rail-based public transport. Its Tramino low-floor trams have been running in European cities since 2009. Another technological breakthrough came in 2011, when Solaris unveiled its first . All energy used to power his eco-friendly bus is stored on-board in batteries. All components are electrically driven, making the Solaris Urbino electric bus completely emission-free at the point of operation. In 2012, a 12-metre, low-floor version was introduced, followed in 2014 by articulated models.

8 Buses and trams with the green dachshund

Solaris vehicles are easily identified even from afar. The asymmetrical windscreen with its characteristic curve catches the eye and the green dachshund that graces the front is another distinctive feature. The product range is impressive. It includes low-floor and low-entry city and suburban buses, intercity buses and buses adapted for special use. Customers also may choose between a large number of drivetrains. The range starts with traditional diesel engines and includes engines that run on compres- sed natural gas or biogas, hybrid systems and zero-emission solutions such as trolleybuses and fully electric battery buses. Since 2011, all models can be ordered with the MetroStyle design package. The futuristic exterior of these vehicles, in conjunction with a modified and very spacious interior, is the perfect solution for the most demanding public transport operations. Solaris also manufactures rail vehicles. Tramino trams combine best technology, reliability and modern design. They are fully ready for safe and comfortable transportation of passengers.

11 Urbino with the characteristic windscreen

Urbino low-floor buses are a composition of stylish design, reliable and practical solutions and the guarantee of safety and eco-friendliness. Their unique look is defined by the characteristic curved windscreen. Not only is this a distinctive design element, but it also gives the driver better visibility of the nearside kerb, increasing the safety of passengers waiting at the bus stop. Over the past ten years, Urbino buses have become an integral part of the cityscape of major towns and cities throughout Europe and beyond. Urbino buses are modern and durable, yet very easy to use, operate and maintain.

13 Urbino Low Entry Convenient for all passengers

The Urbino LE family combines the advantages of low- and high-floor buses. The low floor at the front and in the middle of the bus ensures that passengers have easy access, while the high floor in the rear means all seats are facing forward. This means Solaris low entry buses are not only suited to urban operation, but perform equally well as suburban or intercity buses.

14 Urbino CNG Natural gas and biogas an alternative source of power

Compressed natural gas (CNG) and compressed biogas (CBG) are alternative sources of power for buses. The design of such vehicles remains almost unchanged from their diesel siblings. A characteristic feature of Urbino CNG and Urbino LE CNG buses are gas cylinders mounted on the roof. These cutting-edge composite tanks are extremely strong and very safe. This is guaran- teed by the material from which they were made and the technology of their manufacture. CNG and biogas drivetrains reduce the emission of pollutants by up to 85% and in the case of particulate matter by almost 100% when compared with conventional diesel engines. Urbino CNG buses meet the most stringent environmental standards. The reduction in noise emissions also is significant.

17 Urbino Hybrid modern hybrid systems

Caring for the environment and mindful of the cost of operation, Solaris’ engineers have developed a broad range of Solaris buses whose drive is a combination of internal combustion and electric engines. The Urbino Hybrid is a true innovation compared with conventional diesel vehicles and at the same time offers a double saving – the buses reduce both emissions and costs of operation. Full range of hybrid systems allows customers to choose individual solutions tailored to their specific needs, regardless of whether buses run in busy city centre traffic or in the suburbs.

18 Urbino electric a breakthrough in public transport

Urbino electric is the first Polish fully electric bus. It is exceptionally quiet and emission-free. Distinguished by its modern design, it guarantees low operation costs. The length of the vehicle and the configuration of the drive technology of the Urbino electric is exactly matched to their operators’ requirements. This is made possible by the flexible design of the system’s components, which allows them to be selected and scaled according to the demands of the routes the buses will be used on. Based on a route profile supplied by the operator, Solaris’s engineers determine the right choice of technology. Engine power rating, size and capacity of batteries as well as different energy charging solutions (plug-in connection, roof-mounted pantographs and inductive charging system) and fuel cell range extenders can all be specified. All those innovations guarantee a high operational capacity, comparable to the results of diesel engined vehicles and low operational costs. What is more, those eco-friendly bus does not have adverse impact on the environment and the quality of living in cities.

20 Trollino A quiet and comfortable journey

Trollino trolleybuses are a great idea for clean urban transport. These electrically powered vehicles are not only friendly to the environment, but also to passengers. The low floor along the entire length of the trolley- bus lets people get on board comfortably and easily, while the electric motor ensures an extremely quiet and comfortable journey. In comparison with traditional diesel-engined buses, the Trollino is 10 to 15 dB quieter and its electric drive guarantees that the city and its inhabitants can live free from emissions. In addition to electric traction motors, Solaris trolleybuses can be equipped with a diesel auxiliary power unit or an energy storage system. These solutions allow Trollino trolleybuses to run for short distances without an external power supply, i.e. without having to be connected to overhead lines.

23 MetroStyle – the flexibility of a bus, the efficiencyof a tram

The MetroStyle vehicle family attracts attention with its futuristic design, which takes up latest trends in both the bus and tram industry. The front of the bus resembles Solaris trams. The design of the vehicle is also a reflection of its functionality. MetroStyle buses are built for busy routes, such as in Bus Rapid Transit systems. Therefore, the vehicle combines the best features of two means of public transport – the flexibility of a bus and the efficiency of a tram. MetroStyle can be equipped with various types of drives. Apart from Solaris’ full range of diesel-electric hybrid systems, they may be fitted with a traditional diesel engines or with eco-friendly solutions such as trolleybus technology.

24 InterUrbino The versatile intercity and school bus

The Solaris InterUrbino was designed for intercity bus operation. Its universal design combines the best solutions of Solaris’ city buses with features more commonly found on coaches. As a result this bus is perfect for both shorter and longer routes. The InterUrbino can also be adapted for use as a school bus. Comfortable seats with reclining backrests, adjustable armrests and spacious, aesthetic luggage racks above the seats provide comfort for passengers. InterUrbino is available in two lengths: 12 and 12.8 metres. The driver’s cab has been designed with utmost care. The major determinant was functionality: controls and switches are carefully arranged to ensure that the operation of the InterUrbino is almost intuitive. All these aspects are to provide a comfortable, and above all safe, journey for both driver and passengers.

26 Tailor-made buses

The construction of a special-purpose vehicle requires vast experience from the manufacturer. But even this may not be sufficient if the client does not have full confidence in the development of a new tailor-made product. Solaris attaches great importance to special-purpose buses. The factory in Bolechowo has already manufactured several such models, including the beauty parlour, buses adapted to the needs of the fire brigade or those carrying passengers at the airport from terminals to aircraft. However, the real speciality of Solaris are mobile blood donation stations, which are based on the Solaris Vacanza tourist coach. They are used by medical centres in many Polish cities, but have also been sold to the Latvian capital Riga. Solaris mobile blood donation stations directly reach people who want to donate blood, thereby further promoting the idea of honorary blood donation.

28 Tramino proven technology and modern design

The recipe for success and the experience gained from Urbino buses has been transferred by Solaris to a new market – rail vehicles. The Solaris Tramino combines best technical solutions, modern design, comfort and reliability. The first order for Tramino was completed in May 2012. Since then, 45 Solaris trams are operated by Poznań City Transport. Poznań, however, was not the only Polish city to be interested in Solaris low floor trams. Half a century after closing its old tram system, Olsztyn decided to reintroduce those vehicles to the city’s infrastracture, ordering a fleet of 15 Solaris Tramino. They will be delivered in time for the system’s opening in 2015. The Solaris Tramino low floor tram is increasingly noted internationally, where it continues to win favour with operators. After the delivery of 5 Tramino for Jena in 2013, Braunschweig was the next German city to choose these vehicles. 18 Solaris trams ordered by Braunschweiger Verkehrs-AG started to arrive in the city in 2014. Solaris is the first Polish producer to deliver its trams on the German market. The journey of the Solaris Tramino has only started. Thanks to its diversed parameters, easily adapted to different expectations, the tram can be tailored to the specific technical and operational requirements of the customer.

30 Going international

Nearly 9,500 km from south to north, and over 5,000 km from west to east – these are the distances between the farthest points where Solaris vehicles are in service. They are successfully operated throughout Europe and boldly go beyond the old continent. 225 modern buses carry passengers in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The remotest corner of the world reached by Solaris vehicles is the island of La Reunion in the Indian Ocean. Such a rapid sales growth has spurred on the development of a network of dealerships to provide customers with the appropriate level of service. Therefore, subsidiaries and sales agencies representing Solaris Bus & Coach have been established in many countries.

Reliable vehicles and competent service are the best advertisement, so from the outset the expansion of the service network has been based on high standards. Most important is the ability to listen to customers and to quickly respond to their needs. Solaris is trusted by many bus and tram operators who have bought vehicles with the green dachshund. On the one hand, it is a reason to be proud. On the other hand, it no doubt is a huge responsibility and challenge, which Solaris meets with the best qualified professionals. Solaris Service staff provide efficient service on a daily basis and share their knowledge and experience in the construction or operation of our vehicles. No less important is the rapid delivery of spare parts and after sales care. For this reason, an increasing number of authorised repair shops has been established over recent years, located in close proximity to customers in order to further improve service operations.

36 More than just vehicles open and transparent rules

The general concern for both the natural and the social environment is taken into consideration at every level of Solaris’s activities. The company strives to build lasting mutual relations with all its partners. In practice, this results in an open business policy not only towards customers, but also local stakeholders and employees. In 2012, Solaris established the „Green Dachshund Foundation - for the rescue of the defenseless”, whose aim it is to support not only the most vulnerable people, but also animals. In October 2012, in order to meet the demands of working parents, Solaris opened one of the first nurseries in Wielkopolska region that welcomed over 30 children of its employees. It is called “Under the Green Dachshund” and is located next to the company’s plant in Bolechowo. One of the elements of Solaris’s CSR strategy is to support vocational education of young people. The company cooperates with vocational schools, where students learn the profession of mechatronics technician and fitter. Solaris doesn’t forget about the youngest passengers, either. They certainly deserve special consideration. The company organises training sessions and presentations called „On the road with the dachshund”, which are aimed at primary school pupils and kindergarten children. The course aims at familiarising children with essential principles of road safety. In 2005, Solaris launched the „Safe Driver” training programme. Its aim is to improve the safety of road users. During these training sessions drivers learn to anticipate and quickly identify hazards as well as to recognise and consolidate the ability to adequately respond in extreme conditions.
