On-board energy generation
12/17 Electric buses
Batteries designed for electric buses
. In-house expertise in designing battery packs for electric buses . High energy or high power batteries . Use of multiple 40 kWh (high energy) / 25 kWh (high power) packs = batteries of 120–240 kWh (high energy) / 75–125 kWh (high power) . Packs connected in parallel = buses still run if individual packs fail (80 kWh / 50 kWh required) . Standardised dimensions and connections = assured availabilty of replacement and upgrades even after years . North American and Japanese suppliers for cells = consistent quality at cell level . Production in close cooperation with existing partner = assured quality
13/17 Electric buses
Charging systems and range extension
. Cable & plug . Conductive opportunity charging with pantograph . Schunk (pantograph mounted on bus) . Siemens (pantograph mounted at station)
. Inductive opportunity charging . Bombardier Primove . Fuel cells to extend the operational range . Battery remains source of traction power . Fuel cells are used to recharge the battery
14/17 Electric fuel cell buses
. Hochbahn Innovation Line 109 Central station – Rathausmarkt – Alsterdorf . Fuel cells augment batteries for all-day zero-emission operation . Recharging and refuelling only in depot
Project partner Hamburger Hochbahn Co-funded by German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure as part of the National Innovation Programme Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Hamburg, Germany Technology, administered by NOW Supported by Clean Energy Partnership 2 Urbino 18.75 electric with fuel cell range extender Vossloh Kiepe electrics ▪ Ballard fuel cells 120 kWh batteries ▪ central motor
15/17 Electric fuel cell buses
Planned market-led development
. Various models and solutions in preparation . Go-ahead will depend on market interest
. New models and lengths of vehicles . new generation 18-metre articulated . 12-metre rigid bus . 24-metre bi-articulated bus
. Proposed Centre of Competence for fuel cell buses . Central location ready to serve growing markets . Maintenance and commissioning capability
