Applications are invited from individuals within the first five years of their training who are intending to undertake a long term career in stained glass, preferably within the U.K. Recently I made a concentrated effort to contact each of our past Award winners. As a result I can report that of the 14 who have completed „Awards For Excellence‟, 9 of them are working in glass today, 2 are actively seeking work in glass and one other with whom I could not make contact is believed to be working in glass. Of the 20 who have completed the shorter „Ashton Hill Awards‟, 14 are working in glass, one is seeking to return to doing so after health problems and another is completing her degree studies. This is a very positive set of outcomes which demonstrates the contribution which these awards are making to professional stained glass work. Application Deadline: 15/03/11: Call For Entries: Nuutajärvi International Artist in Residence Program. 1‐14 October 2011. The Residency offers studio glassblowers and artists an opportunity to work with hot glass in the Nuutajärvi Glass Village, Finland, about 2 hour drive from Helsinki. In Nuutajärvi are located one of Iittala Group's glassworks, Tavastia Glass School, NuGO Glass Gallery Co-operative and Lasikomppania aka “The Glass Company”, a local glass co-operative. Lasikomppania, the organizer of the artist residency, was founded in 2003 to provide facilities for independent glassmakers and artists and to make Nuutajärvi more well known as a glass centre in Finland and abroad. The Residency covers 14 days. It includes 5 days in the hotshop for glassblowing or hot casting with clear glass. The artist is responsible of travel expenses and additional materials like glass colours, moulds etc. The hotshop is equipped with two gloryholes with diameters of 17,7" and 11,8", three annealers and a tank furnace. We are using Glasma C48 pellets. Capacity of glass use per day is max. 100kg. Basic glass tools are also available for use. Accommodation is provided for the artist in a local guesthouse. One twin‐room can be provided if accompanied by an assistant. Separate accommodation for possible assistant is available at €30.00 per night (self‐catered, basic single‐room). The Chosen Artist is to have a presentation, of his/her work in Nuutajärvi, if possible. (A slideshow etc.). The new Gallery occupies part of the space currently housing the Kristallmuseum and shop in Johansfors Glasbruk, Sweden . Johansfors lies at the southern end of Glasriket, “The Kingdom of Glass” in Emmaboda Kommun and is equidistant from Växjö, Kalmar and Karlskrona. There are direct rail services connecting Emmaboda with Copenhagen and Gothenburg, both of which have extensive airlinks. The Gallery will specialise in the work of studio artists working with glass, with a particular emphasis on international links. Building on the traditions of Johansfors Glasbruk, there will be a special focus on engraved glass. The Johansfors Gallery complements other venues in the area, including the new Glass Factory in Boda Glasbruk, Smålands Museum, which houses a permanent exhibition of studio glass produced by members of the Glasakademi, representing Swedish studio artists, the showrooms of Orrefors Kosta Boda in Kosta, Orrefors and Åfors, Transjö hyttan, and the Design School of Linné Universitet in Nybro. There is no equivalent gallery in Sweden specialising in the work of studio artists on a transnational scale, but the programme of exhibitions is designed to extend the activities planned in the Glass Factory. The Gallery will work with a number of representative bodies, including Glasakademin and a number of British groups, among them the Scottish Glass Society, the Guild of Glass Engravers and the Contemporary Glass Society. *Peter Newsome ARBS, RBA, a sculptor who specialises in glass sculpture, has recently been elected to Membership of the Royal Society Of British Artists. He is one of only a handful of British Sculptors who have been honoured in this way. Press Release: Ruskin Glass Centre. New Centre of Craft and Creativity in the Historic Stourbridge Glass Quarter. After a busy year of building work; the newly refurbished Ruskin Glass Centre is throwing open its doors and readying itself for a busy festive season. Following a £1.4m refurbishment, made possible thanks to funding from Advantage West Midlands, the site that once was home to the glass trade greats of Royal Doulton and Webb Corbett is continuing to help glassmakers thrive in Stourbridge. The extensive works has resulted in 15 workshops, all home to independent businesses housing a range of glass craftspeople as well as other complementary businesses. Manager Leigh White said; „We are thrilled with what has been achieved on what was once a rather neglected site and are proud of the quality of artists and businesses that we are now home to‟. Ruskin Glass Centre is home to a wide array of glass crafts; from live glassblowing, respected studio glass artists, engravers, glass decorators, and glass repair specialists to the diverse yet complementary trades of furniture design, handmade soap, textiles, photography, printing and publishing. There is also a brand new 30 cover cafe on site serving high quality fresh organic snacks, meals and desserts under the watchful eye of newly appointed Catering Manager Chris Williams. On asking how he felt about the coming weeks Chris said; “It‟s an extremely exciting opportunity to open the Cafe providing the local area and beyond with the finest offerings, using locally sourced organic produce; most of which is being sourced as close as Kinver, at the farm operated by Ruskin Mill Education Trust, the operating organisation of Ruskin Glass Centre”.
