Hull History Centre: Papers of the Palmes Family of Naburn U DDPA Papers of the Palmes Family of Naburn 13th cent. - 1906 Biographical Background: The Palmes family traced its pedigree back to Manfred Palmes who was living in 1140 and had lands in Taunton, Somerset. It is a family unique in being able to trace an unbroken inheritance from son to son from the twelfth century to 1974, with only one exception in the eighteenth century. In 1226 lands at Naburn in East Yorkshire were assigned to William Palmes by Richard de Watervill, the brother of Maud de Watervill, William Palmes's wife. The demesne lordship of Naburn then descended in the Palmes family to the twentieth century (Baines, Old Naburn, p. 45; Allison, History of York East Riding, iii, p. 77; Foster, Pedigrees, iii). Naburn is about three miles south of York and the Palmes family built a manor house on the east bank of the River Ouse. The house was first mentioned in 1345 and had eight hearths in 1672. A drawing of circa 1720 indicates a two storey house, three bays in length with attic windows in high gables. In other words, the family was comfortably-wealthy, although it was not until the early sixteenth century that any of the male members of the family held public office. William Palmes, who was living in the middle of the fifteenth century, married Ellen Rocliffe, whose father was one of the barons of the exchequer. She provided him with three male heirs and a daughter before taking the veil during his lifetime, in 1479. -

‘Daylight upon magic’: Stained Glass and the Victorian Monarchy Michael Ledger-Lomas If it help, through the senses, to bring home to the heart one more true idea of the glory and the tenderness of God, to stir up one deeper feeling of love, and thankfulness for an example so noble, to mould one life to more earnest walking after such a pattern of self-devotion, or to cast one gleam of brightness and hope over sorrow, by its witness to a continuous life in Christ, in and beyond the grave, their end will have been attained.1 Thus Canon Charles Leslie Courtenay (1816–1894) ended his account of the memorial window to the Prince Consort which the chapter of St George’s Chapel, Windsor had commissioned from George Gilbert Scott and Clayton and Bell. Erected in time for the wedding of Albert’s son the Prince of Wales in 1863, the window attempted to ‘combine the two ele- ments, the purely memorial and the purely religious […] giving to the strictly memorial part, a religious, whilst fully preserving in the strictly religious part, a memorial character’. For Courtenay, a former chaplain- in-ordinary to Queen Victoria, the window asserted the significance of the ‘domestic chapel of the Sovereign’s residence’ in the cult of the Prince Consort, even if Albert’s body had only briefly rested there before being moved to the private mausoleum Victoria was building at Frogmore. This window not only staked a claim but preached a sermon. It proclaimed the ‘Incarnation of the Son of God’, which is the ‘source of all human holiness, the security of the continuousness of life and love in Him, the assurance of the Communion of Saints’. -

146 HISTORIC BRASS SOCIETY JOURNAL THE SACKBUT AND PRE-REFORMATION ENGLISH CHURCH MUSIC Trevor Herbert n the mid-1530s the household account books of the Royal Court in London showed that as many as twelve trombone players were in receipt of regular fees. If these accounts /signify all expenditure on Court music at that time, it can be estimated that an eighth of the wages bill for this part of its activities went to trombone players. The 1530s were something of a high point in this respect, but it remains the case that for the whole of the 16th century a corps of trombonists were, in effect, salaried members of the royal musical establishment.1 Yet, not a single piece of English music from this period is explicitly linked to the trombone. This in itselfis not significant, as the labelling of parts at this time was rare,2 but the illustration draws historians of brass instruments to a neat focus. Throughout the 16th century trombonists occupied a regular and important place in English musical life. The players were professionals, probably fine and distinguished performers: What did they play and when did they play it? In this article I address some issues concerning the deployment of trombones in the first half of the 16th century. It is worth stressing that musical practice in England in the 16th century was sufficiently different from the rest of Europe to merit special attention. As I explain below, the accession of Henry VII marks what many historians recognize as a watershed in British history. The death of his son Henry VIII in 1547 marks another. -
Mapping Rapidly Changing Minority Ethnic Populations: a Case Study of York
Mapping rapidly changing minority ethnic populations: a case study of York Gary Craig with Sue Adamson, Nazreen February 2010 Ali and Fasil Demsash Official statistics can be of limited help to those providing services to increasingly diverse populations. Using an innovative approach, this project drew on both formal and informal sources to estimate the size and diversity of York’s minority ethnic population and the implications for key agencies. The project was commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s York Grants Committee, which makes modest grants to organisations to help improve the general quality of life in York. The Committee wanted a more up-to-date picture of the city’s population than census data offers, to help inform its work. This report looks at: • the approach piloted by the project • what this approach found • the project team’s recommendations for policy and service organisations in York. The project suggests that York’s population is much more ethnically diverse than is often supposed, identifying 78 different first languages within the city. www.jrf.org.uk When they talk about communities, all they see are white, Asian, black and possibly Chinese. They don’t see the Italian community, they don’t see the Polish community and they don’t see the Iranian community. Instrument Descriptions
RENAISSANCE INSTRUMENTS Shawm and Bagpipes The shawm is a member of a double reed tradition traceable back to ancient Egypt and prominent in many cultures (the Turkish zurna, Chinese so- na, Javanese sruni, Hindu shehnai). In Europe it was combined with brass instruments to form the principal ensemble of the wind band in the 15th and 16th centuries and gave rise in the 1660’s to the Baroque oboe. The reed of the shawm is manipulated directly by the player’s lips, allowing an extended range. The concept of inserting a reed into an airtight bag above a simple pipe is an old one, used in ancient Sumeria and Greece, and found in almost every culture. The bag acts as a reservoir for air, allowing for continuous sound. Many civic and court wind bands of the 15th and early 16th centuries include listings for bagpipes, but later they became the provenance of peasants, used for dances and festivities. Dulcian The dulcian, or bajón, as it was known in Spain, was developed somewhere in the second quarter of the 16th century, an attempt to create a bass reed instrument with a wide range but without the length of a bass shawm. This was accomplished by drilling a bore that doubled back on itself in the same piece of wood, producing an instrument effectively twice as long as the piece of wood that housed it and resulting in a sweeter and softer sound with greater dynamic flexibility. The dulcian provided the bass for brass and reed ensembles throughout its existence. During the 17th century, it became an important solo and continuo instrument and was played into the early 18th century, alongside the jointed bassoon which eventually displaced it. -
