George Challenger 94 A Bakewell Scout group identified 98 2 The Mediaeval and Victorian Misericords of All Saints' Church, Bakewell Susan Hillam Misericords are the ledges found underneath the seats of choir stalls in British and European cathedrals and churches. In mediaeval times, the clergy, monks and canons sang the eight daily offices standing in their stalls. By the tenth century the stalls were partly enclosed with wooden sides and backs to protect the occupants from the cold and draughts of an unheated building. The word "stall" means a place to stand. We still use the term in "cattle stalls". Although fold-up seats were introduced in the eleventh century, these could be used only for the Epistle and Gradual at Mass and the Responses at Vespers. By the twelfth century, small ledges on the undersides of seats were referred to as indulgences, or in Latin misericordia, meaning acts of mercy. -

The Seasons staircase window Glenyarrah mansion, Sydney. c.1876. “A range of performance beyond any modern artist”; so Ford Madox Brown’s appreciation of the work of his former pupil, the brilliant colourist, decorator and stained glass artist, Daniel Cottier (1837-91) was reported in the Glaswegian press. “Here tone and colour are suggestive of paradise itself,” he enthused about Cottier’s decorative enrichment of the interior of Queen’s Park United Presbyterian Church (1867-69), which Brown saw in Glasgow in 1883.1 Brown had befriended Cottier in the late 1850s at the Working Men’s College in Red Lion Square, London, where Cottier attended lectures by John Ruskin and was instructed in draw- ing by Brown, who had taken over from Dante Gabriel Rossetti.2 Through Brown, Cottier studied Pre-Raphaelite art and observed the formation of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. in London in 1861.3 Following on from Morris’s example, Cottier made a successful career from his decorating businesses in London, New York, and Sydney, where he co-established Lyon, Cottier & Co. in 1873. ‘Daylight upon magic’: Stained Glass and the Victorian Monarchy Michael Ledger-Lomas If it help, through the senses, to bring home to the heart one more true idea of the glory and the tenderness of God, to stir up one deeper feeling of love, and thankfulness for an example so noble, to mould one life to more earnest walking after such a pattern of self-devotion, or to cast one gleam of brightness and hope over sorrow, by its witness to a continuous life in Christ, in and beyond the grave, their end will have been attained.1 Thus Canon Charles Leslie Courtenay (1816–1894) ended his account of the memorial window to the Prince Consort which the chapter of St George’s Chapel, Windsor had commissioned from George Gilbert Scott and Clayton and Bell. Erected in time for the wedding of Albert’s son the Prince of Wales in 1863, the window attempted to ‘combine the two ele- ments, the purely memorial and the purely religious […] giving to the strictly memorial part, a religious, whilst fully preserving in the strictly religious part, a memorial character’. For Courtenay, a former chaplain- in-ordinary to Queen Victoria, the window asserted the significance of the ‘domestic chapel of the Sovereign’s residence’ in the cult of the Prince Consort, even if Albert’s body had only briefly rested there before being moved to the private mausoleum Victoria was building at Frogmore. This window not only staked a claim but preached a sermon. It proclaimed the ‘Incarnation of the Son of God’, which is the ‘source of all human holiness, the security of the continuousness of life and love in Him, the assurance of the Communion of Saints’. -

LEARNING FOCUS 1: The Communion of Saints: showing people what God is like. We have just heard about Eric and the kindness he shows to his family. He is part of the worldwide community we all belong to. Christians, whether they are living on earth or in heaven, belong to what is called the Communion of Saints. Communion means to belong together and saints are those who follow God’s way. They show us something about God. They may be kind, generous, loving, faithful, forgiving and caring. In the first letter of St John, where he is encouraging his readers to follow God’s way, he offers some ideas about how we can all become a bit more like God, a saint: See what great love the Father has for us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! Dear friends, we are already children of God, we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope in Christ, will try to be loving and kind and keep away from anything that is wrong. 1 John 3:1−3 God’s Story 3, page 149. We are all called to be saints and there are some people who are given a special title of saint because of the life they have led. These saints may have a special feast day during the year like St Andrew, St David, St Francis or St Margaret. On 1 November every year the Church celebrates the Feast of All Saints, that is all the holy women and men who have followed God’s way. -

The underlying assumption in scholarship on this topic is that female mediation lessens male violence. This stance can however be questioned since it may be the result of gender-based peace and diplomacy models that relegate women’s roles to that of conduits between men. By analysing the concept of communicability and relevance of certain nodes in complex networks we show how our sources afford women more complex and nuanced social roles. As a case study we consider a historical narrative, namely Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People, which is a history of Britain from the first to eighth centuries AD and was immensely popular all over Europe in the Middle Ages.
