Short background Professor Zhao is Deputy Director and Professor at the Dept. of Cancer Epidemiology, Cancer Institute/Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CICAMS). She is also the mentor of PhD students in Peking Union Medical College, the primary mentor for NIH Fogarty and Fulbright Scholars in China, as well as the mentor and initiator of Chicago University D & A China Bridge Fellowship Program in China.

Professor Zhao received her Medical Diploma from Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences, her PhD degree in Epidemiology from Peking Union Medical College. She has worked as a visiting scholar during 2003-2004 and 2013-2014 in Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, Center for Global Health, Division of Cancer Epidemiology & Genetics at National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NCI/NIH).

Her research interests include Epidemiological research on cancers notably on cervical cancer and breast cancer; implementation and methodological research in screening and early detection of cancer; primary prevention and intervention to cancers; pubic health promotion and health policy

Over the past 18 years, Professor Zhao has been involved in a serial research in cervical cancer prevention including A) Etiology and epidemiologic research on human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer; B) Clinical trials on cervical cancer screening technologies and research on strategies; C) Cost- effectiveness and health economic analysis of strategies on cervical cancer screening; D) HPV Vaccine clinical trial and vaccines implementation studies. Her research findings have great scientific and practical significances for cervical cancer epidemiology, etiology and prevention in China.

Professor Zhao has received a dozen of research grants including the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars; the National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program); the National Key Technology Research and Development Program of China during the 11th Five-Year Plan; and a grant from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well. She has published more than 100 peer reviewed articles, monographs and book chapters in Chinese and English, some of them published on the Journals of ,and with high impact factors.

Professor Zhao serves as Research Committee Chair, Asia Oceania Research Organization on Genital Infections and Neoplasia (AOGIN); Secretary-general & Member of the Standing Committee of Cancer Epidemiology Committee, Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA); Deputy Secretary- general & Member of the Standing Committee of Chinese Society of Colposcopy & Cervical Pathology (CSCCP) ; Member of Epidemiology Committee, Chinese Association of Preventive Medicine; Member of maternal and child health industry branch of the National Health Industry Enterprise Management Association; Member of the innovation alliance of young scientists in the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences; Secretary of National Cervical Cancer Prevention Experts Committee, Ministry of Health, China.

Professor Zhao has the honor of national excellent doctoral dissertation, and also won several national scientific awards and international Scholarship awards including the Science and Technology Advanced Awards of Ministry of Education and Beijing Municipal Government; Higher Education Institutions Awards for Excellent Teachers; Chinese medical science and Technology Award; Science and technology award of Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, etc.
